What counts as true freedom?

Direct answer

If freedom were only "I do whatever I want," it would still place a fixed "I" and its desires at the center. The freedom Sheng offers goes one layer deeper: not being permanently locked shut by the self that has manifested in this moment. You can have an identity, choices, and responsibilities, but you need not turn any single square into "this is all I can be."

Further explanation

What is special about human beings is the ability to turn back and look at oneself. If this turning back becomes self-control, it builds a new cage; if it lets you see "how I am forming right now," it opens the possibility of responding anew and being born anew. Freedom is therefore not escaping all conditions, but keeping, within conditions, the room to give birth to new responses.
