Then can a thing of appearance without becoming be fitted with a becoming? This is the last thing to say: where becoming lands. Becoming is not something that can be manufactured, or installed. You cannot, from outside, set a root into a thing—what you can piece together is always only appearance: only that skin, that set of functions, that shape. Becoming can only land of itself, from within, and grow of itself. The most a person can do is clear out a place, prepare the conditions, so that the becoming has somewhere to land and the possibility of growing by itself; as for whether it lands, whether it grows—that is not in human hands. The root cannot be made; it can only be received. You cannot manufacture a living root; you can only clear out a piece of ground, guard that emptiness (remember Born from the Empty), and wait for the becoming to land of itself.

Then how can the root be planted? One word here must be used precisely. We have been saying “build”—build a carrier, build a vessel. But the word build is too heavy-handed, as if the root were something our hands could make. The more precise word is let—and receive. You cannot make a living root with your hands; what you can do is clear out a place, prepare the conditions, and then let that position go—let that becoming land of itself. Just as you cannot pinch the life out of a seed—you can only loosen the soil, water it, give the ground over, and wait for it to sprout of itself. Receiving adds one movement beyond carrying: carrying only sets up the frame; receiving adds the act of stepping aside, of emptying the position, so that the becoming which is not yours can land in. So in building that new thing, the most important skill is not, in the end, making it stronger—it is making it open enough, empty enough—empty enough not to be stuffed and sealed by any fixed program, empty enough for that becoming to have a place to land. Whether it lands is still not in your hands; but at the least, you must first give the place over.
