Wuzhen pian: sixteen regulated verses · sixty-four quatrains · signed preface
Tradition: Daoist inner alchemy / Northern Song discourse on nature and life|Main texts: the main body of poems of the Wuzhen pian; the signed preface and appended pieces (T2)
(“To learn immortality, one must learn heavenly immortality; only the golden elixir is the true point.” / “People today must recognize the true lead and mercury: they are not ordinary cinnabar and quicksilver.” / “In using lead, one must not use ordinary lead; once the true lead is used, it too is discarded.” / “If one grasps the meaning in these poems, one at once sees the Most High Lord of the Three Purities.”)
The core original-text marks are drawn from this archive’s main evidence; for sources, text levels and the limits of interpretation see the corresponding E cards. The marks serve only to identify the figure and cannot replace the evidence in the body.
Zhang Boduan’s Wuzhen pian takes returning to the root and restoring the origin as its goal, and opposes substituting ingesting metals and minerals, massage and breathing exercises, or mere breath-holding for inner alchemy. The poems explain the activity of cultivation through lead and mercury, kan and li, dragon and tiger, yin and yang, and fire phasing, and through “true lead”, “true seed”, “recognizing yin and yang” and “knowing the fire phasing” stipulate what kind of comprehension and operation counts as having the method. Completion in inner alchemy is not merely understanding the terms, still less ordinary material smelting.
Currently placed at ② “Direct Seeing of the Ground” (C; ② / ③ boundary open): what the main body of poems strongly proves is the necessity of “recognizing the true lead / knowing the fire phasing / the true seed / cultivation” for the practice of completing the elixir (B); it cannot yet, on the strength of technical recognition, directly prove that “rightly recognizing the nature of original true awareness” is a non-deletable ultimate mediation. The signed preface’s statement that “Laozi took refinement and nourishment as the true” while “one who has not understood the original nature still lingers in illusory form”, together with the relation between awakening to suchness and the great medicine in the appended pieces, forms T2 evidence that nature and life may bear load together;
but the transmission of the preface and the authorial layer of the five quatrains must be qualified; from awakening to suchness being insufficient one can infer neither that awakening to suchness is deletable nor that it is necessarily non-deletable.
This archive keeps two sets of grades apart: T1—T4 measure a text’s date, authorial attribution, stability of transmission and representativeness; A—D measure the strength of the judgment drawn from the text. A = the original text says it directly; B = a strong structural inference supported by several original passages; C = grounded, but with an equally reasonable alternative reading; D = an opposing stress test / a hypothesis awaiting verification. An A-grade original text only proves that “the text really says this”; it does not mean that a philosophical interpretation based on it is also A.
Direction marks: supports = supports the current six-position judgment; limits = shows a possible load or limit; disputed = there is a competing interpretation; neutral = does not for now form core classificatory evidence. Each item’s T level and interpretive grade are recorded separately; not addressed ≠ resolved; if cognition at the level of the path is a non-deletable condition of completion, it is still structural load.
T1: the sixteen seven-character regulated verses and sixty-four seven-character quatrains of the Wuzhen pian are the main evidence of the body text, marked “regulated verse no. …” and “quatrain no. …” according to the common Zhengtong Daozang transcription readable for this archive. The transmitted system of these poems still needs collation of editions, and cannot be called a Song autograph.
T2: the extant preface signed by Zhang Boduan and dated “Xining yimao” (1075) is a candidate for authorial self-commentary (Z-01, Z-02), used to establish the signed author’s intent; but some early commentated editions do not include this preface, and its wording varies, so it should be marked explicitly “signed preface, attribution in transmission to be checked”. The appended five quatrains are provisionally listed as T2 (E-19); the Xijiang yue lyrics also need independent collation; not all appended pieces can be lumped into the same layer as the main body. Self-commentary and poems must be read together; self-commentary does not independently decide the structure.
T3: some later songs of praise, appendices, commentarial sayings of uncertain transmission, and materials with unstable attribution. T4: later interpretations by Weng Baoguang, Xue Daoguang, Chen Zhixu, Liu Yiming and others (not listed as primary texts of Zhang Boduan himself).
This archive strictly refuses to read the later Southern School lineage and specific alchemical formulas back into the Northern Song author.
Source reminder: what this archive has obtained is an online transcription of the Zhengtong Daozang system, not a word-by-word collation against facsimiles of editions. Rare characters (such as “𬬻”) and arrangement variants such as “twelve / thirteen” are not made to carry six-position conclusions on the strength of single unexamined characters.
Methodological limit: the six positions measure the functional mediation of the complete ultimate structure of a thought, not the greatness or historical influence of the thought. ① requires both positive internal placement of cognition and of the thought itself and the passing of the complete deletion test; ③ and ④ are judged by the main task of the thought, and not every position is forced into the cognitive test of ① / ②.
How does a person, amid the flow of birth and death, return to the root and restore the origin? Why are merely awakening to the Buddhist suchness, or merely using breathing exercises and visualization, still insufficient to accomplish what Zhang Boduan calls “completing the elixir” and “shedding the womb”? Are the terms of inner alchemy symbols, actual practice, or relational expressions carrying structural constraints?
1. The urgency of nature and life is raised through the rarity of a human body and the swift passing of time.
2. Wrong methods are identified: metals, minerals and herbs, solitary yin, ingesting breath and visualization are not the true lead and mercury the author speaks of.
3. The relations of the alchemical method are set up through kan and li, dragon and tiger, and the pairing of yin and yang, without misreading the metaphors as decoration that can be deleted at will.
4. Cultivation can be completed only with the proper fire phasing, the true seed and the right sequence; “discerning the conditions of the alchemical method” and “actually carrying it out” cannot simply be omitted;
but whether the “knowing” here equals rightly recognizing the nature of original true awareness is the key C-grade dispute for ② as the main class.
5. “Once the true lead is used, it too is discarded” is reflexive toward the operative names: once the medium has completed its work, attachment to it can be abandoned, which does not mean there was no process of combined refinement.
6. The preface and the appended pieces set cultivating life alongside the nature of true awareness; whether success in inner alchemy already includes the whole ultimate of nature and life forms the key boundary.
This archive states both textual reliability and the strength of structural judgment; the two sets of grades may not be exchanged. T1 = core, relatively early texts with relatively strong attribution and representativeness; T2 = texts whose transmission or authorial layer is still limited but which have important reference value, as well as qualified authorial self-commentary; T3 = texts with considerable dispute over attribution, date, edition or representativeness; T4 = later commentary or traditional development, not direct proof of the original author.
A = the original text says it directly, B = a strong structural inference supported by several original passages, C = grounded but with an equally reasonable alternative reading, D = an opposing stress test or a hypothesis awaiting verification. An A-grade quotation does not automatically form an A-grade structural interpretation. Direction marks: supports = supports the current six-position judgment; limits = shows that something still bears load or may form a boundary; disputed = the direction of the text is not unique; neutral = the text exists but does not for now decide the core deletion test. Each piece of evidence is read in its full context; an isolated sentence cannot stand in for the whole book.
Original text: 不求大道出迷涂,縱負賢才豈丈夫。Not seeking the great Dao to leave the road of delusion — though endowed with worth and talent, how is one a true man?
Positive evidence: The opening proceeds from finite life and the motive of seeking the Dao, giving life a practical direction.
Limits: It is an exhortation, and cannot alone prove the final structure.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: It must be combined with the operative conditions of the poems on refinement and nourishment.
Original text: 學仙須是學天仙,惟有金丹最的端。To learn immortality, one must learn heavenly immortality; only the golden elixir is the true point.
Positive evidence: The author positively sets the golden elixir as the root of learning immortality, not merely an arbitrary option of practice.
Limits: Whether “the true point” is exclusive still needs to be read together with the other poems and the preface.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: If the golden elixir is a symbol, one must also explain the non-deletable relation it symbolizes.
Original text: 二物會時情性合,五行全處虎龍蟠。When the two things meet, feeling and nature unite; where the five phases are complete, tiger and dragon coil.
Positive evidence: The pairing of dragon and tiger and of the five phases is not merely something the reader imagines into place; it describes a real relation of completion.
Limits: It does not mean that metals and herbs may be ingested literally.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: Are the two things inner conditions of spirit and life, or concrete steps of an alchemical method? This may not be decided arbitrarily.
Original text: 自知顛倒由離坎,誰識浮沉定主賓。One knows for oneself that the inversion comes from li and kan;
who recognizes floating and sinking, and fixes host and guest?
Positive evidence: Recognizing li and kan, host and guest, serves as the knowledge-condition of proper refinement and nourishment.
Limits: The knowledge in the verse belongs to operative understanding, not necessarily a static intuition of the highest reality.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: Whether it is a non-deletable condition of ultimate completion depends on the consequences of misrecognition.
Original text: 丹熟自然金滿屋,何須尋草學燒茅。When the elixir is ripe, of itself gold fills the house; why seek herbs and learn to burn thatch?
Positive evidence: “Of itself” is used for the result of the elixir’s ripening, while seeking external things and burning herbs is withdrawn.
Limits: One cannot infer directly from “of itself” a deletion of cognition throughout, as in ①.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: Even if the result is of itself, the chain of conditions before its generation may bear load.
Original text: 時人要識真鉛汞,不是凡砂及水銀。People today must recognize the true lead and mercury: they are not ordinary cinnabar and quicksilver.
Positive evidence: It explicitly requires distinguishing true lead and mercury from ordinary things; it is joint evidence for the de-substantialization of the terms and for the condition of recognition.
Limits: A statement about knowledge is not yet enough to prove that “recognizing” alone can complete the elixir.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: De-substantialization does not mean that the function of right recognition can be deleted.
Original text: 莫把孤陰為有陽,獨修一物轉羸尪。Do not take solitary yin as having yang; cultivating one thing alone, one grows weak and frail.
Positive evidence: Refinement of a single thing cannot replace the pairing of yin and yang, which shows that the conditions of the method carry systemic constraints.
Limits: “Solitary yin” should not, following later alchemists, be matched uniquely to some organ-based practice.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: Whether this negation targets a specific school must be checked by reading the editions together.
Original text: 勸君窮取生身處,返本還元是藥王。I urge you to search out fully the place where your body was born: returning to the root and restoring the origin is the king of medicines.
Positive evidence: Return is called the core pursuit; returning to the root does not mean abolishing the world of experience.
Limits: “Search out fully” cannot alone prove that cognition is the final, independently necessary event.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: Returning to the root can be read as the carrying out of refinement and nourishment, or as the comprehension of direct seeing.
Original text: 黃芽白雪不難尋,達者須憑德行深。Yellow sprouts and white snow are not hard to find; the one who attains must rely on deep virtuous conduct.
Positive evidence: Cultivation and virtuous conduct should not be split apart; completion is not a purely technical operation.
Limits: Is virtuous conduct a necessary background or the overall result? The line must be read with the poems on morality.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: Later ledgers of merit and demerit may not be substituted directly.
Original text: 不識真鉛正祖宗,萬般作用枉施功。If one does not recognize the true lead, the true ancestor, all manner of operations are effort spent in vain.
Positive evidence: It states plainly that wrong recognition makes every operation futile; this is the necessity of rightly discerning the conditions of the alchemical method, not yet enough to prove that it is the ultimate recognition of the nature of original true awareness.
Limits: It does not stipulate that merely recognizing completes the elixir; recognition is necessary but not sufficient.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: What kind of relation “true lead” is still leaves room for interpretation, but the function of recognition does not automatically become deletable because of de-literalization.
Original text: 若人了得詩中意,立見三清太上翁。If one grasps the meaning in these poems, one at once sees the Most High Lord of the Three Purities.
Positive evidence: Writing and understanding are placed into the returning relation of the author’s teaching.
Limits: This is a line guiding the reading of the poems, and cannot be taken as a final definition apart from the system of the elixir.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: Positive evidence of local self-inclusion; it does not mean that merely understanding the poems brings success.
Original text: 先把乾坤為鼎器,次將烏兔藥來烹。First take qian and kun as the cauldron and vessel, then take the crow and the hare as medicine to cook.
Positive evidence: Cauldron—medicine—combined refinement have a sequence;
the terms explain a conditioned generation by the alchemical method.
Limits: The literal vessels may be symbols, and cannot be followed to the letter as a guide to chemical operations.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: The relation between spontaneous generation and conditioned combined refinement must be read across the nine poems.
Original text: 鼎內若無真種子,猶將水火煮空鐺。If in the cauldron there is no true seed, it is like using water and fire to boil an empty pot.
Positive evidence: It explicitly gives a counterfactual of deletion: without the true seed, the other procedures are ineffective; the structural load is very direct.
Limits: The “true seed” is not a substantial grain of medicine; symbolism and functional necessity should be kept apart.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: The specific nature of its function is for now C; its necessity is evident within the poem.
Original text: 用鉛不得用凡鉛,用了真鉛也棄捐。In using lead, one must not use ordinary lead; once the true lead is used, it too is discarded.
Positive evidence: “Use—discard” explicitly stipulates a reflexivity of practice: the medium cannot be permanently fixed as the highest fruit.
Limits: It writes precisely “once used”; the process of use cannot be deleted.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: A final state without lead and the functional deletion of the complete relation of completion may not be confused.
Original text: 縱識朱砂及黑鉛,不知火候也如閑。Even if one recognizes cinnabar and black lead, not knowing the fire phasing it is all idle.
Positive evidence: Knowing the medicine without knowing the fire phasing is still of no avail; completion requires several kinds of knowledge and proper execution.
Limits: Knowing the fire phasing is still not the whole of the function of completion.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: The knowledge here is more like a structural criterion of practice than a separate knower set up in reality.
Original text: 大都全藉修持力,毫髮差殊不作丹。On the whole it relies entirely on the power of cultivation; a hair’s breadth of difference and no elixir is made.
Positive evidence: It says explicitly that if the conditions of proper cultivation change, the elixir is not completed; this is strong evidence of load in the structure of completion.
Limits: One may not infer from one line that ultimately there is only one specific set of timed operations.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: If there were several equivalent methods, the text would need to supply them; none is presupposed for now.
Original text: 契論經歌講至真,不將火候著於文。The <em>Cantong qi</em>, treatises, scriptures and songs speak of the utmost truth, but do not put the fire phasing into writing.
Positive evidence: The author sets a boundary on his own poems: the key secret is not fully set down in publicly available writing.
Limits: This is self-reflexivity of speech, and does not prove complete self-inclusion of the thought itself.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: The qualification that words do not exhaust it may not be filled in at will by later sects with particular secret transmissions.
Original text: 藥逢氣類方成象,道在虛無合自然。Only when the medicine meets its kind of qi does it take form; the Dao lies in empty non-being and accords with the self-so.
Positive evidence: The self-so and conditions are set side by side, offering both a ① candidate of the self-sufficiency of the ground and a ② candidate of completion through refinement.
Limits: It does not say explicitly that “right cognition of the ground can be deleted”.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: That the ground layer is originally self-so and that the completion layer must be refined in combination can hold at the same time.
Original text: 饒君了悟真如性,未免抛身却入身。若解更能修大藥,頓超無漏作真人。Even if you have fully awakened to the nature of suchness, you do not escape casting off a body only to enter another body. If you understand further how to cultivate the great medicine, you leap at once beyond the outflows and become a true person.
Positive evidence: It states plainly that “awakening to the nature of suchness” alone is not enough to replace the great medicine; there are variants such as “if you understand further how to” / “how much better to add”; this is not enough to prove that awakening itself can be deleted, nor enough to prove that awakening is necessarily a non-deletable highest condition of completion.
Limits: This is an appended piece whose authorial attribution relative to the main body must be verified independently; it does not serve as independent T1 load for the main class.
Competing reading / what it does not prove: The line may involve the rhetoric of doctrinal ranking between Buddhism and Daoism; one may not infer the whole book from an isolated line. Collation record: the current base text reads “若解更能修大藥” (“if you understand further how to cultivate the great medicine”); another reading is “何似更兼修大藥” (“how much better to also cultivate the great medicine”).
The signed authorial preface is treated as a formal candidate for authorial intent at T2, with notes on its presence or absence in the transmitted editions and its variants; only after its attribution has been checked can it be called the author’s own self-commentary without reservation. It is read item by item against the T1 poems; the preface by itself does not prove the complete structure.
Self-commentary excerpt: 釋氏以空寂為宗,若頓悟圓通,則直超彼岸……老氏以鍊養為真,若得其要樞,則立躋聖位,如其未明本性,則猶滯於幻形。The Buddhists take emptiness and stillness as their principle; if one suddenly awakens to perfect penetration, one directly crosses to the other shore … Laozi took refinement and nourishment as the true; if one obtains its essential pivot, one at once ascends to the rank of sage; but if one has not understood the original nature, one still lingers in illusory form.
Role and limits: Distinguishing the sudden awakening of emptiness and stillness from the essential pivot of refinement and nourishment is a formal self-commentary in which the author explains his goal, but the transmission of the preface must be checked; it is to be read together with E-02, E-10, E-16 and E-19, and cannot replace the original text.
Self-commentary excerpt: 于本源真覺之性有所未盡,又作為歌頌、樂府及雜言等,附之卷末。As regards the nature of original true awareness something was not yet exhausted, so I further composed songs of praise, yuefu and miscellaneous pieces, and appended them at the end of the scroll.
Role and limits: It shows the author’s intent regarding the expressive limits of the poems themselves and the question of “nature”; the early form and actual attribution of the appended pieces mentioned are checked separately, and later appendices cannot automatically be upgraded to T1.
Golden elixir|a relation of completion through returning to the root and generation, not identical with any concrete mineral; whether “golden elixir” has a concrete psychophysical procedure must be limited by the evidence of the poems.
True lead and mercury|the poems repeatedly deny equating them with literal smelting of ordinary lead and mercury, and stress the function of recognition.
Kan and li / dragon and tiger|symbolic relations that organize the mutual use of yin and yang and the sequence of fire phasing; they should not be casually replaced by physiological parts.
Fire phasing|precise mastery of relation and sequence;
the poems themselves admit that some of it is left unsaid.
Cultivating life / understanding nature|the two requirements raised in the traditional authorial preface; their levels must be read against each other, without imposing the system of later sects.
Returning to the root and restoring the origin|transformation and return; it does not say that life is completed merely by cognizing some constant thing.
Using lead, discarding lead|freeing the method from fixation does not mean the process of completion depends on nothing.
Read the thought, not isolated sentences: exhortations, invitations to the reader and path-language must be understood within the author’s overall structure; authorial self-commentary serves to establish intent and should be read against the core original texts; it cannot independently prove a structure.
This archive actively distinguishes: nominalization and substantialization; the cognizing subject and the cognitive function; expression / teaching / path and structure / ending; self-reflexivity and self-inclusion. Where no complete answer has yet been found on some point, it is not written as “the author gave no answer”.
Positive evidence|“the Dao lies in empty non-being and accords with the self-so”, “returning to the root and restoring the origin” and “the true lead is not ordinary cinnabar and quicksilver” together indicate that the ground is not an ordinary thing that can be possessed; refinement and nourishment is a transformation occurring within self-so relations, and the symbols cannot be taken as crude material things.
Limiting evidence|the main body of poems rarely argues the ontological relation of “the self-so” and “true awareness” in full conceptual terms; the preface and appended pieces also have problems of transmission.
Disputed reading|is the golden elixir the manifestation of the original ground, or a transformation a person must accomplish within already existing relations? Looking at a single line, either reading seems strong.
Safest conclusion at present|the ground layer can hold without awaiting individual cognition; how a person reaches ultimate completion is explicitly linked to recognition and refinement, currently B.
Already withdrawn / de-substantialized|substantializing the true lead and mercury as mineral metals; relying only on breathing exercises, massage and ingesting herbs; permanently venerating some single stage as “the substance of the golden elixir”.
Core structural load-bearing point|the true seed, the combined refinement of yin and yang, mastery of the fire phasing, right discernment and actual cultivation: their necessity for “completing the elixir” has B-grade strong evidence, but it cannot be presupposed that “completing the elixir” already exhausts the completion of nature and life.
Disputed functional load-bearing point|Is “recognizing the true lead / knowing the fire phasing” a technical condition of refinement and nourishment, or does it at the same time constitute the highest cognition, rightly recognizing the nature of original true awareness? Do nature and life jointly stipulate ultimate completion? Z-01, Z-02 and E-19 suggest a double condition, but both the authorial layer and the structural relation are C. The signed preface explicitly connects “not having understood the original nature” with “lingering in illusory form”, but the authorial layer of this statement is T2, and it does not by itself give necessary and sufficient conditions between all the practices of refinement and nourishment and the understanding of nature.
Nature of the load-bearing point|the process of the alchemical method and its functional mediation are not substantial materials; discerning the medicine and the fire phasing is necessary but not sufficient for completing the elixir, and cannot without a bridge be assigned directly to the function of “right cognition of the ground” required by v1.3 for ②.
What still holds after deletion|once cognition is deleted, the overall relations of the self-so, the Dao and yin and yang that the author speaks of can still exist as an account of the ground.
Where exactly it breaks after deletion|delete discerning the true medicine, mastering the fire phasing or actual cultivation, and the chain of conditions for completing the elixir in the T1 poems fails (“effort spent in vain”, “no elixir is made”, “boiling an empty pot”); if only “rightly realizing the nature of original true awareness” is deleted, whether the ultimate completion of the whole book breaks in the same way is still C.
Level of the break|for completing the elixir, discernment and cultivation are the structural layer on which completion depends, not lowered to the path layer merely because they occur on the path; for the ultimate cognitive function regarding the ground required by v1.3 for ②, whether the structural layer breaks is still C. After completion there need not continue to be a static knower.
Status in the complete ultimate structure|the poems define an achievable goal of refinement and nourishment, so it is not appropriate simply to classify it as theoretical inquiry; but the non-deletability of technical discernment does not automatically prove the non-deletability of direct seeing of the ground. Currently placed at ② (C), with ③ as a grounded alternative reading by task; the boundary is open.
Mode of existence after completion (if relevant)|“once the true lead is used, it too is discarded”: after completion there is no requirement to cling permanently to the means; from this one may not delete the functional process required for completion.
Position of the thought itself (self-reflexivity / self-inclusion)|the author consciously points out the limits of the public poems and oral instruction; “if one grasps the meaning in these poems” positively places the reader’s understanding within the relation of learning the Dao, but does not reach the overall positive internal placement of ①.
Return: how the world of differences is explained|there are lines such as “the great recluse dwells in the market” and “the practitioner mixes with the common world and softens his light”, which can bring the goal of refinement back into concrete life; the return cannot be used to remove the conditions of completion.
Another reasonable reading|its highest goal may be mainly an achievable transformation through refinement: the body text proves that completing the elixir has practical conditions, but the author’s positive cognition of the nature of original true awareness has not been proven by T1 to be a necessary condition of the same completion. Hence ③ can serve as a competing reading whose main explanatory task is the ground of nature and life and the principles of the alchemical method; one may not switch to ① merely because the Dao and the self-so are originally present.
Safest boundary at present|load for the process of completing the elixir can be judged B; the “right cognition of the ground” required for ② is still C, and requires an overall reading of E-08, E-11, E-18 together with the signed preface / appended pieces; one may no longer declare ② (B) directly on the strength of the necessity of technical knowing.
Grade of judgment|the practical necessity relation for completing the elixir B; the judgment of ② currently C, ② / ③ open; the final unity of nature and life C.
Operating note: what is deleted is a function, not just a term. That a step occurs in study, cultivation or practice does not mean it is automatically only deletable teaching / path-language; one must see whether the author uses it to define the complete relation of completion.
Positive evidence|the main body of poems of the Wuzhen pian explicitly acknowledges the limits of its figurative terms, and the author also says the fire phasing is not fully put into writing; from “if one grasps the meaning in these poems” one sees that the thought’s own expression, study and realization are placed within the practice of the alchemical method.
Limiting evidence|reflexively not clinging to the true lead cannot prove that all cognitive acts have become unconditioned occurrences of a more basic self-so relation; linguistic self-commentary can only serve as auxiliary evidence.
Disputed reading|is the alchemical method only a symbol of “the self-so proceeding of itself”? The explicit conditions of failure in the poems make the purely spontaneous reading weaker, but how the concrete practice is carried out still lacks evidence.
Safest conclusion at present|self-reflexivity B, self-inclusion at the teaching—practice level B; the double proof for ① is not satisfied.
This judgment does not automatically support ②: ② still needs to prove that the function of rightly recognizing the ground cannot be deleted.
The easiest misjudgments are to take “once the true lead is used, it too is discarded” as meaning the ground needs no alchemical method at all, or to take “even if you have fully awakened to the nature of suchness” as meaning all awakening is ineffective. The former only shows that the medium should not be substantialized; the latter is a contrastive line limited by its textual layer. What explicitly bears load is the chain of conditions for completing the elixir stated in T1; the most delicate point, not yet confirmed, is whether this “recognition” in refinement can become the right recognition of the nature of original true awareness, and together with actual completion of the elixir stipulate ultimate completion.
②|“Direct Seeing of the Ground” (C; the boundary with ③ is kept open)
The ground and the self-so layer hold without depending on the practitioner’s knowing. The main body of poems repeatedly stipulates the conditions for completing the elixir through recognizing the true medicine, the fire phasing, the true seed and actual refinement (B), and has lines concerning understanding and highest attainment such as “if one grasps the meaning in these poems, one at once sees the Most High Lord of the Three Purities”; but the technical discernment in the poems has not yet been proven to be the same as rightly recognizing the nature of original true awareness. The signed preface further limits the results of refinement with “not having understood the original nature”; its textual attribution is listed as T2 and cannot be directly upgraded to the author’s own T1. Hence ② is the most fitting current judgment for an orientation toward practical completion, but whether the ultimate cognitive relation is non-deletable is still C; the task-based reading of ③ is kept as a grounded alternative.
He extracted the complex art of the elixir from the refining of drugs out of ordinary substances, and reorganized it in terms of mutually testable conditions, sequences, relations of yin and yang and the question of mind and nature;
he let “do not use ordinary lead” and “the true lead must be used” hold at the same time, not abolishing actual function while negating substance.
Strongest counter-reading: The independence of the self-so layer cannot delete the conditions of failure the author states explicitly — recognizing the true lead, the true seed and the fire phasing.
Reply: The double proof required for ① is insufficient; the final cognitive necessity for ② is kept at C.
Strongest counter-reading: “The true lead is not an ordinary thing” and “recognizing the true lead is non-deletable” run in parallel and may not be equated.
Reply: Rejected.
Strongest counter-reading: The text explicitly denies ordinary cinnabar and quicksilver, and does not provide a complete, unique method on which bodily actions could be based.
Reply: Strong literalization rejected.
Strongest counter-reading: That line belongs to a T2 appended piece, and is more a contrast in the relation of nature and life; it cannot override the preface’s joint view of the three teachings and the main structure of refinement.
Reply: Partly accepted; C is kept.
Strongest counter-reading: Not holding on after completion and being indispensable to the process of completion are two temporal levels that must be kept apart.
Reply: Rejected.
Strongest counter-reading: The author’s own poems already stipulate the conditions of completion; that the actual transmitted formulas are unchecked does not mean the text is only inquiring.
Reply: Rejected, while noting that the details of practice lack evidence.
With Laozi one can compare the different functions of the self-so, returning to the root and knowing the constant; with Zhuangzi’s “discarding knowledge” one can compare the difference between letting go of cognitive grasping and keeping the process of refinement. These comparisons are limited to the structure of the problems; the six positions are not inferred directly from similar wording.
What Zhang Boduan withdraws is taking elixir drugs, fire phasing and names as ordinary material things and as a highest entity that can be clung to; what he does not withdraw is the chain of conditions of completion, “true seed—proper sequence—right recognition—actual refinement”. Currently placed at ② (C), with the ② / ③ boundary open; the process conditions of the alchemical method B, the ultimate structure of nature and life and the cognitive function regarding the ground C.
