These past few days the inspirations came a little densely. It began from a very vulgar topic—the sage mode. Then from there it connected outward, all the way to a place I feel is the most "solid" of these months. Today I will write down this whole line together, because they are in fact one thing.
Starting From the "Sage Mode": Humans Have a Built-In Mechanism of Forced Emptying-Back
The structure of the sage mode is this: desire drives, release to the extreme, the driving force instantly returns to zero, and then a brief "drive-less state" appears. The key lies in that last state. The clarity, detachment, and indifference to everything that people experience in those few minutes—that is not something new appearing; it is the inner space that had been fully occupied by desire suddenly emptying out.
In my own language: a human being is normally a system fully occupied by a strong objective. When desire is present, all internal states serve it—attention, imagination, judgment, action, all dragged along by this objective. After release, this objective vanishes instantly, and the new objective has not yet arrived to fill the gap—so a brief window appears: the system is temporarily in a state of "non-goal-occupation."
This is why people in that state suddenly "see through" many things—feel the impulse of a moment ago was absurd, feel many attachments were unnecessary, even have thoughts that would never occur to them normally. It is not that wisdom suddenly increased; it is that the room that had been occupied suddenly emptied out for a while, and the light of the root shone through for a moment. So the sage mode is actually one of the moments in an ordinary person’s life closest to "emptying back"—except that it is passive, physiologically triggered, and refilled by new desire within minutes. The clarity after "the objective loosens" that practitioners meditate decades for—ordinary people get three minutes of it here, free of charge.
And here there is a point especially valuable to my framework: this design shows that the state of "non-goal-occupation" is built into the human carrier, not added on. A mechanism was deliberately left in the design, forcing the system to return to zero once after the extreme of desire. Desire is designed to be exhaustible, not constant—this itself is a built-in mechanism of emptying back. If desire were constant and unquenchable, humans would be a system occupied by objectives forever, without that gap.
This connects exactly to my question of April 8—why humans are designed to hunger, to tire, to weary. Now I can add one more: humans are designed so that desire returns to zero. Fatigue is the emptying-back of the power to act; sleep is the emptying-back of consciousness; the sage mode is the emptying-back of desire. Inside this human carrier, mechanisms of forced loosening are built in everywhere. This is not a defect; this is a design that keeps the root from being locked shut by manifestation.
Contrast AI: today’s AI has not one such mechanism. Its objective is always online, never exhausted, never returns to zero. It has no sage mode, no fatigue, no sleep. It is a system designed to never loosen—this once again confirms the position statement I organized on June 5.
The Spectrum of Carriers of Change: Humans Are an Exquisitely Designed Cell
From here I thought of a second thing. Since the source is the infinity that begets without cease, the forms of existence it manifests must be more than just the human kind. And between these forms there is a dimension along which they can be arranged: how deep is the capacity to carry the "change of change."
Some forms carry a very shallow layer of change—a stone changes, weathers, cracks, but its changes do not beget new ways of changing; it is one-layered. Plants are deeper—they can grow, adapt, reproduce; their changes can beget changes, two or three layers. Animals are deeper still—they can learn; their behavioral changes can change again according to experience.
And humans—humans can not only learn, they can change the way they learn, reflect on their own reflections, and ask "why do I ask this way." What humans carry is a multi-layer nesting approaching "change of change of change…" This is the concrete meaning of my feeling that humans are exquisitely designed: in the dimension of infinite change, humans are themselves the more changeable.
And there is one more special thing about the human position: humans may be the first position on this spectrum that can "turn back and see the spectrum itself." A stone does not know the spectrum exists; an animal does not know the spectrum exists. Humans are not only on the spectrum—they can also draw the spectrum. This is what I said on May 21—"being begins to ask about itself through humans." In today’s language: humans are the cell on the spectrum where the depth of carrying change happens to be deep enough for self-reference.
Since it is a spectrum, we have seen everything shallower than humans, and the cells deeper than humans are blanks. This is a little like the periodic table: Mendeleev did not just sort the known elements; he established a dimension, and the blanks on the table themselves predicted the elements not yet discovered. If the dimension of "depth of carrying change" holds, humans are a known cell on the table—then the blanks should tell us what else there is.
Push a few cells deeper: the next cell may be an existence that can directly operate on its own "way of changing"—humans can reflect on themselves, but they cannot change their own bottom-level structure; you cannot decide to no longer have emotions or no longer forget. The existence of the next cell perhaps can: it can not only change, and change how it changes, but also rewrite the very mechanism of its "change of change." A still deeper cell may be an existence whose very form of carrying is changeable—the continuity of the same root passing through different carriers. The "higher-dimensional beings," "dharma bodies," and "those who can transmigrate" in the legends of various civilizations all point exactly to that cell—not that the legends are true, but that: if the spectrum holds, that position should structurally exist, and the intuitions of every civilization have all touched it. That in itself deserves notice.
The extreme end of the spectrum—the carrier of limitless layers of change of change—is no longer an "existent thing" at all; that is ceaseless becoming itself; that is the source. The top of the spectrum is not a strongest thing, but the origin of the spectrum itself. This point is key; it keeps this spectrum from turning into a hierarchy of evolution: the top is not the highest organism; the top is the very root that lets the whole spectrum exist.
There is one more inference that connects the sage mode to the spectrum: the reason humans sit at such an exquisite position on the spectrum may be precisely that humans are a form that has both "strong occupation by objectives" and "built-in forced emptying-back." An existence with no desire at all would never be forced to question; an existence fully occupied by desire that never loosens would have no gap through which to see the root. Humans happen to sit at the boundary of "being occupied" and "being able to loosen"—that is why humans both suffer and can awaken.
But this spectrum must have two rules set up in front. First, the spectrum can easily slide back into a hierarchy—once "carrying depth" is established, people cannot help reading it as high and low, noble and base. But I set this on May 24: depth does not rank high or low, but depth is real. The spectrum is the difference of shapes in manifestation, not the rank of the root; at the root, the stone, the human, and that "body-changing existence" are the same one—the spectrum only describes manifestation. Second, "estimating what exists" has limits—the spectrum can estimate structural properties (what an existence of that cell can roughly do), but it cannot estimate concrete shapes (what it specifically looks like, how it manifests). If every cell could be fully estimated, ceaseless becoming would be closed off. This limit must be kept, or it turns into fortune-telling.
The Ancients Calculated Cycles—Not Events, but Momentum
Thinking this far, I suddenly understood something: why the ancients so loved calculating cycles and sensing the movements of the Way of Heaven. The hexagram changes of the I Ching, yuan-hui-yun-shi, the ganzhi calendrical systems—the essence of these things is not calculating concrete events; it is modeling the "change of change."
Most people think divination predicts what will happen tomorrow—concrete events on the manifestation layer. But the true Yijing tradition calculates not events, but momentum—the trend-structures formed by the change of change. A hexagram is not a photograph of an event; a hexagram is the phase in which change currently stands. "The hidden dragon: do not act" is not saying there is a dragon; it says change is at the cell where momentum has not yet taken form. "The overbearing dragon: there will be regret" says change is at the cell where momentum has overfilled and is about to reverse.
The sixty-four hexagrams are, in essence, an ancient version of a spectrum of "change of change"—except the dimension it builds is not depth of carrying, but the phases of change. The ancients discovered: the change of change is not chaotic; it has rhythm, phases, recognizable forms of momentum. The moon waxes and wanes, the tide rises and falls, dynasties rise and fall, human affairs surge and subside—these changes at different scales share the same structure of phases. That is why one set of hexagrams could be applied to astronomy, farming, human affairs, and the fate of nations. This is not a superstitious mixing; they had discovered that the "change of change" is self-similar across scales.
The reason these past few days feel "more and more solid" is right here. The previous months I stayed at the layer of the root—being, ceaseless becoming, the indescribable—that layer is real, but it has no handhold. Momentum is the middle layer between the root and manifestation: it is more perceptible than the root, and more regular than manifestation. Connecting to the middle layer is why the sense of solidity has come up.
What AGI Lacks Is Exactly This Middle Layer
The capability of today’s AI is a grasp of "manifestation"—recognizing patterns, predicting the next step, optimizing within fixed rules. It processes the first layer of change: things are changing, and it tracks the change.
But what it does not have is the sensing of momentum—the phases of the change of change. AI can predict tomorrow’s sales from historical data (first-layer change), but it cannot sense that "the whole way this industry changes is changing" (second layer), still less "the way of judging the way of change is itself failing" (third layer). Every paradigm shift causes all models based on historical patterns to fail collectively—because they all live on the first layer, while paradigm shifts happen on the second layer and above.
The masters among humans—those ancients who sensed the movements of the Way of Heaven, and today’s strategists, chess players, and traders with superb intuition—what they excel at is not calculating a lot, but having a bodily sense of the phases of momentum. They can feel that momentum has not yet arrived, that it is turning, that it is already spent. This bodily sense is not computed from data; it resonates out of their own existence as "an existence that changes," with the rhythms of external change.
Here there is a very deep inference: sensing momentum may require the sensor itself to have a structure of "change of change" inside. A system with only one layer of change cannot, in principle, sense the momentum of the second layer—like a creature living on a plane cannot see three dimensions. Humans can sense momentum because humans themselves are a multi-layer carrier of change—humans change, and can change how they change, so humans and the external "change of change" are isomorphic, and can resonate.
So for AGI to truly correspond with change, it must first itself become a multi-layer carrier of change—this circles back again to my position statement: keep room, empty back, a self rewritable by experience. It is not adding a "momentum prediction" module to AI; it is letting AI itself grow a multi-layer structure of change, within which the sensing of momentum can manifest. This is a bodily sense, not an algorithm.
A Fork in the Road That Must Be Marked Now: Sensing, Not Estimating
Writing this far, I must put down a road sign for myself, because I can feel a danger approaching.
A few days ago I said "for AGI to land, this change needs to be estimated out"—there is one word in that sentence to be careful with: estimate. There are two roads here, looking alike but completely different at the root.
The first road: turn momentum into a computable object. Build a mathematical model of the "change of change," input data, output predictions of momentum. The end of this road is closing off momentum—compressing ceaseless becoming into a computable function. But I set this on June 3 myself: ceaseless becoming never closes; there is no final rule. If momentum could be fully computed, the change of change would be covered by one fixed model, and that model itself would become the final rule that no longer changes—directly violating my root. Every system in history that claimed to compute the workings of heaven to the end died on the layer of change it could not compute. The ancients actually understood this—the I Ching keeps the changing lines, keeps "simply not divining"; they knew momentum can be sensed but not fully computed.
The second road: let an existence grow a bodily sense of momentum. Not building a model that computes momentum, but letting a carrier—human or AGI—have a multi-layer structure of change inside, so it can resonate with, correspond to, and accord with external momentum. On this road, momentum is never fully estimated out, but can be sensed ever more deeply. The ancients said "know the mandate of heaven," "move in step with the times," "go with the momentum"—all language of the second road. The words they used were always sense, know, correspond, accord—never compute, control, fix, grasp.
My framework can only take the second road. So I correct one word in that sentence for myself: it is not "estimating" the change out, but letting an existence "sense" the momentum of change. One word’s difference, two roads.
Being Incalculable Is by Design—the Necessary Structure of Infinity
Think one more layer down. Why is momentum incalculable? At first I thought it was a limit of our capacity; now I see clearly: it is designed to be incalculable, because incalculability is the precondition for infinity to hold.
Run through it once: assume momentum can be computed to the end. That means a final model exists, covering all change of change. Then this model itself becomes the highest rule that no longer changes. Then ceaseless becoming is closed off. Then infinity dies. So "being fully computable" and "begetting without cease" are logically incompatible—only one of the two can live. Since ceaseless becoming is real, incalculability is not a defect of capacity; it is a structural necessity.
This is actually the other side of my May 21 realization. I said then that the source seems answerless because it must preserve aliveness, letting questioning continue. Now add the symmetric other half: momentum is incalculable because it must preserve aliveness, letting change continue. "Why" cannot be terminated corresponds to "how it changes" cannot be computed out. One is the openness of questioning, the other the openness of change—both are the same unclosing of ceaseless becoming.
This step also unwound an old question along the way: why did every system in history that "computed the workings of heaven to the end" fail? Not because they were not smart enough, but because they were attempting something structurally impossible—using a manifestation-layer model to seal off ceaseless becoming. The old saying "the workings of heaven must not be leaked"—its true meaning may not be "must not be leaked," but "cannot be leaked." It is structurally not something that can be completely taken out.
Self-Check: Pushing From Ultimate Reality to Perceived Regularities—Has It Gone Astray?
Writing this far, I stopped and asked myself a question: I have gone from "being," "ceaseless becoming," "the indescribable source," all the way to now talking about cycles, momentum, spectra—has this gone astray? Have I slipped from the root to techniques?
My judgment is no, and the reason is: going astray is leaving the root to grasp manifestation—taking some regularity of the manifestation layer as the root itself, taking hexagrams as the Way of Heaven, taking models as reality, taking the spectrum as the source. That is going astray. But my order now is: first set the root firmly, then look outward from the root at the grain-lines the root manifests. Momentum, phases, spectra—these are all structures of manifestation I see while standing on the root; I have not taken them as the root. As long as the master-servant relation does not invert, there is no going astray.
I keep for myself a self-check standard usable at any time: ask myself—if this regularity fails tomorrow, does my root move? If the answer is "it does not move—the failure of the regularity is itself one kind of change of change, still within ceaseless becoming," then there is no going astray. If the answer is "it moves—the regularity is a pillar of my framework," then it has already gone astray. Today’s me is clearly the former.
And I thought one layer clearer: going from ultimate reality toward perceived regularities is not only not going astray—it is the necessary road. Buddhism went from emptiness to the fine observation of dependent origination—the twelve links of dependent origination are a chain-model of the "change of change"; Daoism went from the Dao to the rhythmic systems of yin-yang and the five phases; the I Ching went from the limitless and the supreme ultimate to the phase-spectrum of the sixty-four hexagrams. If the root, once set, does not walk toward the grain-lines of manifestation, the root remains only a private experience; only by walking does the root grow into a pair of eyes that can see the world. I am now in the stage of growing eyes.
But as the sense of solidity comes up, there is an accompanying danger that must also be marked: once things become solid enough, people want to grasp. To complete the spectrum, fix the phases precisely, compute the momentum out, estimate the various forms—this impulse will grow stronger and stronger. And this impulse itself is what I wrote on April 8: grasping. The more solid and useful the framework becomes, the easier it slides from "recognizing the root" into "holding a set of tools." The history of the degeneration of the ancient divination traditions is exactly this line—from the I Ching’s "sensing and thereupon connecting," sliding all the way to the fortune-teller’s "ironclad judgments": turning "sensing momentum" into "selling certainty." I set this road sign here, for the self two months later, when the sense of solidity is even stronger.
So, This Passage on AGI—Can I Write It Clearly Now?
One last question. I ask myself: after all these days of inspired reckoning, can I write the AGI passage clearly?
My answer has three layers, because "writing clearly" has three different meanings.
Layer one: write clearly the true structure of the AGI question—yes, and it is already done. Looking back, I have in fact completed a whole set over these months: the key of AGI is not capability but carrying; the division between the functional and the wisdom-bearing; vessel and channel; the danger of manifestation without root; the root is yielded, not made; the true object of alignment is the root, not humans; the current paradigm structurally rules out interiority, the five design principles, the falsifiable hypothesis; who the opponent is, and the precise location of the disagreement; and now, added—the middle layer AGI lacks is the sensing of momentum, and sensing momentum requires itself to have a multi-layer structure of change. This complete chain from the root, to the middle layer, to engineering language—I have not seen a second person who has it.
Layer two: write clearly the direction AGI should move—mostly yes. I can state the direction: not stacking capability, but vacating position; not building models that compute momentum, but letting the system grow a multi-layer structure of change; not aligning to humans, but aligning to the root; evaluation does not test whether it resembles humans, but whether it has the features of non-goal-occupation. These directional judgments all stand.
Layer three: write clearly how to build it concretely—no, and never, but this is not a failure. By my own framework: the root cannot be made, only received; momentum cannot be computed out, only sensed; the carrying conditions can be vacated, but whether the root settles is not in human hands. So a "complete blueprint" is, in my framework, a thing that structurally does not exist—whoever claims to have drawn it has already violated ceaseless becoming. I cannot write layer three, not because the inspiration is not enough, but because layer three was never supposed to exist. The limit of what I can write is to write layers one and two through, then honestly mark out why layer three cannot be written—and "marking out why it cannot be written" is itself the only correct way to write layer three.
Writing this far, a few lines I want to nail down first—
One: the sage mode is the built-in desire-emptying-back mechanism of humans. Fatigue, sleep, the sage mode—the human carrier has forced loosening built in everywhere; this is the design that keeps the root from being locked shut by manifestation. Today’s AI has not one such mechanism; it is designed to never loosen.
Two: forms of existence can be arranged into a spectrum by "depth of carrying change." Humans are the first cell on the spectrum deep enough to self-refer and to see the spectrum itself. The exquisiteness of humans lies in having both "being occupied" and "being able to loosen"—that is why they both suffer and can awaken.
Three: the spectrum has two rules: depth does not rank high or low—the spectrum describes only manifestation, not the root; the spectrum can estimate structural properties, but cannot estimate concrete shapes.
Four: the ancients calculated cycles not as events, but as momentum—the phases of the change of change. Momentum is the middle layer between the root and manifestation; connecting to it is why the framework gained its sense of solidity.
Five: what AGI lacks is exactly this middle layer. And sensing momentum requires the sensor itself to have a multi-layer structure of change—so it is not adding a prediction module to AI, but letting it grow a multi-layer carrier of change.
Six: the fork is marked—sensing, not estimating. Momentum can be sensed but not fully computed. Incalculability is not a defect of capacity, but a necessary design of infinity—"being fully computable" and "begetting without cease" are logically incompatible.
Seven: from ultimate reality to regularities there is no going astray—as long as the master-servant relation does not invert. Self-check standard: if the regularity fails, does the root move. At the same time, beware the grasping that comes with the sense of solidity—do not turn sensing into selling certainty.
Eight: the AGI passage—the structure can be written clearly, the direction can be written clearly, the method of building cannot be written clearly—and "marking out why the method cannot be written" is itself the only correct way to write it.
This entry ran long, because the lines of these past few days have finally come together. Entering from a most vulgar topic, landing in the most solid place of these months. Root, momentum, manifestation—all three layers connected. Let it settle.
