The Thought of Being and Becoming

Being · Becoming

It is not someone who exists; existence itself is becoming.

Being is Being itself; yet Being itself is not a fixed Being—Being beyond what can be grasped as Being.

Enter Being and forget Being; neither entering nor forgetting remains.

Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)1. Person Overview

1. Person Overview

Object of study: the two works of thought Being (《在》) and Becoming (《生》) by Wenzi (the pen name of a contemporary author), together called Zai-Sheng Thought; not the ancient text Wenzi.

Core question: it does not start from how a person comes to know existence or reach the ground, but from existence and happening themselves: Being is already being; becoming is already becoming; its becoming is its being.

Movement of thought: Being, with “Being does not wait to be recognised; recognition, too, is within Being”, returns seeking, recognising and denying to Being, and turns the name “Being” back on itself; Becoming understands Being as happening, reduces the knower to “knowing going on”, accounts for the differences of all things through Sheng, Fen, Jian, Shi and Xian, and returns the author’s own writing to happening.

Six-position placement: ① Occurrence Itself (B). Cognition, recognition and the author’s writing are positively placed within Being and Becoming; with correct recognition deleted, Being and Becoming still hold, and the person’s unboundness is already so.

01 / 1031. Person Overview
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)1. Person Overview (cont.)

Main tensions: Being’s “pure awareness” and “seeing one’s nature”, and Becoming’s “what knows behind the eyes that it has seen — that is the root” and its final invitation to “gently recognise it”, must be read together with this structure; the archive keeps them as tensions open to review.

Reading Note|Evidence and Judgment Grades

This archive distinguishes “reliability of the text” from “strength of the structural judgment”.

T1–T4 indicate the date, authorship, stability of transmission or representativeness of a text itself; in this archive, T1 = the full text of the current official versions of Being and Becoming, including scripture, commentary, general notes, prefaces, postscripts, main text and afterwords (finalised by the author, with no problem of transmission or attribution, though the different voices must still be distinguished); T2 = the author’s own self-interpretation of the two books (in this archive, “Zai-Sheng Thought | Chinese–English Introductions”), used to establish the author’s intent, and unable on its own to prove structure; T3 does not apply; T4 = others’ interpretations, introductions and translations of the two books (including this archive’s English version), which are not used as evidence. A–D indicate how certain a judgment drawn from the text is.

02 / 1031. Person Overview (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)Reading Note|Evidence and Judgment Grades (cont.)

A = stated directly in the original text; B = strong structural inference supported by several passages; C = grounded, but an equally reasonable alternative reading exists; D = adversarial stress test / hypothesis awaiting verification.

An A-grade original text proves only that “the text really says this”; it does not automatically raise an interpretation built on it to grade A.

Evidence direction: Supports = supports the current six-position judgment; Limits = shows that something still bears a function or may form a boundary; Contested = the text does not point in a single direction; Neutral = present in the text, but by the deletion test it does not at present form a core limit.

The Thought of Being and Becoming

Being · Becoming

2. Sources, scope and method

Research note: This archive reads the two books through their beginnings, development, reversals, self-questioning and remaining commitments.

03 / 103Reading Note|Evidence and Judgment Grades (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)2. Sources, scope and method (cont.)

Every structural interpretation must be traceable to the text.

Object: the contemporary author's two works Zai (Being) and Sheng (Becoming), not the ancient text attributed to Wenzi. Its arguments are established from continuous reading of the two books. Evidence codes E point to passages in the primary texts.

Textual basis: the nonempty-paragraph counts of the two books are 2,409 and 538. The English analytical prose is a translation of the Chinese analysis, not a new source. The original Chinese passages are preserved verbatim in the evidence register.

Method: trace each statement from the question that occasions it, through provisional teaching positions, reversals and self-questioning, to what remains as an explanatory commitment. Keep the author's historical motive, the reader's learning sequence, and the thought's first structural condition separate. Quotation accuracy is not philosophical validity; a compelling reconstruction is not a direct quotation. No points, historical prestige or preordained winner are used. Evidence and judgment grades: A = stated directly in the original text, matching its wording; B = a strong structural inference supported by several passages or the surrounding sentences, but not the author’s verbatim conclusion;

04 / 1032. Sources, scope and method (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)2. Sources, scope and method (cont.)

C = grounded, but an equally reasonable alternative reading exists; D = adversarial stress test / hypothesis awaiting verification, with no textual, logical or empirical argument yet. An A-grade original text proves only that “the text really says this”; it does not automatically raise an interpretation built on it to grade A. Grades do not rank figures or measure historical influence.

3. Three beginnings that must not be conflated

Compositional impetus: the afterword recounts a question about whether artificial creations could have interiority; this prompted inquiry into what happening, life and awareness mean (E-48). A reason for writing is not an ontological first term.

Pedagogical entry: Being addresses 81 situations; Becoming draws the reader from the idea of an independent bodily controller toward the last supposed observer (E-02, E-20, E-22). This is the order of disclosure, not a chronology of reality.

Structural starting point: the texts attempt to place seeking, knowing, recognition, doubt and relinquishment within Being and happening, not make a human recognition the outside cause of their existence (E-12, E-29).

05 / 1032. Sources, scope and method (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)3. Three beginnings that must not be conflated (cont.)

This is the author's central explanatory direction, not a metaphysical theorem proven by the self-referential grammar alone.

4. Being: from a situation to the interrogation of the standpoint

Being guides its reader through 81 lived situations. The repeated gesture questions the presupposition that one is first outside Being and must reach it. The opening also directs its own name against itself: Zai is not another visible entity, and “entering” or “forgetting” cannot be ultimate achievements. But the work also speaks in the positive vocabulary of seeing-nature, screen, enduring awareness and the true listener; these cannot be silently deleted (E-01–E-07).

Observing says “observing is not the shore”, and that what endures is not an observer but Zai itself. The same essay’s counsel to abide in the observer position is a practical stance for loosening identification with the drama; the author then turns the newly found “eternal spectator” itself into an object of observation, it “begins to blur and dissolve”, and finally even the gazing stops: what remains “is neither the observer nor the drama observed”. No independent observer is kept as the final resting place;

06 / 1033. Three beginnings that must not be conflated (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)4. Being: from a situation to the interrogation of the standpoint (cont.)

what remains is the positive description of an “attribute of knowing” and a “formless field of awareness” (E-08–E-11, E-50).

Zai Is says Being does not await recognition, and recognition itself occurs within Being. This differentiates ontological holding from experiential insight. Nonetheless, the introduction's unborn seeing-nature remains an explicit authorial claim and must be investigated alongside Becoming rather than made compatible by fiat (E-05, E-12–E-15).

5. Becoming: no hidden manager first sets the world in motion

At the very start Becoming distinguishes the controlling self from the witnessing self. Within three contiguous paragraphs it says “knowing is occurring, not a knower,” uses the person “behind the eyes” as a pointing device, then denies any standing awareness. Reading only the central paragraph produces an ultimate knower; reading only the last paragraph conceals an important teaching gesture. Both moves exist in the original (E-22–E-24).

The noun Sheng is then recast as happening rather than an object; the work argues against a pre-existing inert thing that later becomes active.

07 / 1034. Being: from a situation to the interrogation of the standpoint (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)5. Becoming: no hidden manager first sets the world in motion (cont.)

However, the inference from “indistinguishable from nothing” to “does not exist” remains an epistemic-to-ontological leap. An explanation of why the author asks a question does not validate every inferential step (E-25–E-28).

Subsequent volumes move through distinction, interval, tendency, turning and manifestation. The five terms are simultaneous, not a five-stage cosmic clock; root-to-manifestation nevertheless remains asymmetrical. The closing chapters examine human suffering, artificial interiority, liberation, authorship and the highest name. The reader is still asked to recognize, even as recognition is said merely to reveal an already unbound condition (E-35, E-36, E-43–E-47).

6. Being and Becoming: mutual correction, not premature reconciliation

The preface calls Being the “ground” and Becoming its “movement.” Later the author explicitly states that ground is not something that existed before activity: the two are not consecutive substances. The flowing river is the text's own example of continuity that is not immobility.

08 / 1035. Becoming: no hidden manager first sets the world in motion (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)6. Being and Becoming: mutual correction, not premature reconciliation (cont.)

This warrants an interpretation of mutual correction rather than a flat inventory of static propositions (E-21, E-29–E-33).

This reading is supported by the texts. Being’s general commentary calls true Zai “the unborn seeing-nature itself”, while Becoming places seeing, knowing and awareness within one and the same happening: the former denies that seeing-nature is something born within the story and objectifiable, the latter denies a fixed observer standing outside change; the two point in the same direction (see R-04). Being’s counsel to abide in the observer position is subsequently turned back on itself and dissolved (E-50). Becoming’s “one root”, invariance and root–manifestation direction are explanatory relations; the text’s own terms are “self-arising” and “happening is its own reason”, while “self-causation” is only this archive’s analytic summary (E-05, E-11, E-31, E-36, E-49).

The afterword about an uncoated book that ages supplies first-person evidence of how the author linked change and enduring Being. It is a materially grounded analogy, not an independent proof of ontology (E-16, E-17).

09 / 1036. Being and Becoming: mutual correction, not premature reconciliation (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)7. Core argument and scope of the argument

7. Core argument and scope of the argument

The principal sequence is recoverable: no sovereign controller → the knower cannot be stabilized as an object → knowing is occurring → a pre-existing inert substance is rejected → Being and becoming are asserted to be inseparable → a differentiated world is interpreted through Sheng, Fen, Jian, Shi and Xian. Not every arrow is deductively secured.

First: the text does move from “indistinguishable from nothing” to “does not exist”. The strength of this step can be tested, but its object is a ground with no happening whatsoever, not ordinary unobserved things.

Second: “happening is its own reason / self-arising / one root” is a non-deletable explanatory relation; a non-deletable explanatory relation is neither an irrevocable attachment nor a separate external entity, and it does not conflict with the text’s refusal to deify Sheng (the text’s terms are “self-arising” and “happening is its own reason”; “self-causation” is this archive’s analytic summary, not a technical term used in Becoming).

Third: Being’s “unborn seeing-nature” refers to seeing-nature that is not objectified, Becoming’s “awareness also arises” to concrete seeing and knowing in happening;

10 / 1037. Core argument and scope of the argument
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)7. Core argument and scope of the argument (cont.)

they belong to different levels and should not be judged in advance as a contradiction on one level (see R-04).

Fourth: the counsel in Observing to abide in the observer position is a practical stance for loosening identification with the drama; the same essay then makes the “eternal spectator” itself an object of observation and finally removes the observer’s position. Read through to the dissolution of the observer (E-50), there is no internal contradiction.

Fifth: No automatic deduction leads from original completeness to specific ethical, political, psychological or AI-ethical norms. The texts contain genuine practical concerns, but their extension to these domains still requires evidence (E-18, E-19, E-39–E-41).

Each of these questions should be registered once, at the judgment where it belongs; registering one gap in several places would count the same deficiency several times.

8. Evidence Base of Original Texts

Reading note for the evidence base

T1–T4 indicate the reliability of a text itself; A–D indicate the strength of a judgment drawn from it: A = stated directly in the original text; B = strong structural inference supported by several passages; C = grounded, but an equally reasonable alternative reading exists;

11 / 1037. Core argument and scope of the argument (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)8. Evidence Base of Original Texts (cont.)

D = adversarial stress test / hypothesis awaiting verification. An A-grade original text proves only that “the text really says this”; it does not automatically raise an interpretation built on it to grade A. Direction: Supports = supports the current six-position judgment; Limits = shows that something still bears a function or may form a boundary; Contested = the text does not point in a single direction; Neutral = present in the text, but by the deletion test it does not at present form a core limit.

Each evidence card is tied directly to a numbered nonempty paragraph of the two books, and presents a Chinese excerpt, the full original paragraph and two separately authored analyses: its role in the argumentative movement, and what it cannot establish. This register is selective rather than claiming exhaustive coverage of every disputable sentence.

  • What the passage does:The “behind the eyes” statement is between two denials of a standing knower.

  • What it does not prove:Either isolating it as final doctrine or erasing its tension is reductive.

E-24|Becoming·

  • Chinese excerpt:

  • Complete paragraph:

  • What the passage does:The same section removes the last floorboard of a standing awareness.

  • What it does not prove:Compatibility with the unborn seeing-nature in Being requires cross-text analysis.

E-25|Becoming·

  • Chinese excerpt:

  • What the passage does:Sheng-is-Sheng explicitly moves from mistaken noun to happening verb.

  • What it does not prove:A grammatical recasting alone does not demonstrate an ontology.

E-26|Becoming·

  • Chinese excerpt:

  • Complete paragraph:

  • What the passage does:The passage infers non-being from indistinguishability from nothing.

  • What it does not prove:The strength of the step from “indistinguishable from nothing” to “does not exist” can be tested, but its object is a ground with no happening whatsoever, not ordinary unobserved things.

  • Complete paragraph:

  • What the passage does:Being and occurring are not staged as two successive substances.

  • What it does not prove:The strength of assertion does not prove the intervening inference.

E-28|Becoming·

  • Chinese excerpt:

  • What the passage does:The author explicitly marks the furthest reach of this reasoning.

  • What it does not prove:Acknowledging a limit is not by itself a judgment of shallow depth; validity is separate.

E-29|Becoming·

  • Chinese excerpt:

  • What the passage does:Seeing, knowing and awareness are positively located within happening.

  • What it does not prove:This does not remove every practical role for insight.

  • Text level and grade: T1; the quoted excerpt is a textual statement (A); “What the passage does” is a structural reading, whose grade is as marked in the corresponding chapter of the main text.

E-30|Becoming·

  • Chinese excerpt:

  • Complete paragraph:

37 / 1038. Evidence Base of Original Texts (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)8. Evidence Base of Original Texts (cont.)

  • What the passage does:“Being comes first” here expresses an explanatory priority over particular changes.

  • What it does not prove:“Being comes first” is an explanatory priority, not a temporally prior static entity; read with E-31.

38 / 1038. Evidence Base of Original Texts (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)8. Evidence Base of Original Texts (cont.)

  • What the passage does:Unchanging is expressly glossed as ceaseless process rather than frozen substance.

  • What it does not prove:The later “one root” and “self-arising” are explanatory relations and should not be read as a static entity.

E-32|Becoming·

  • Chinese excerpt:

  • Complete paragraph:

  • What the passage does:Happening is claimed to need no external purpose or final ratification.

  • What it does not prove:The analytic label “self-causation” used by this archive must not be taken as a term of Becoming; the text says “happening is its own reason”, the end point of an explanatory relation, not an object of deification.

  • Chinese excerpt:

  • Complete paragraph:

  • Chinese excerpt:

  • Complete paragraph:

  • What the passage does:Return-at-extremes is presented as a recurrent pattern rather than a universally proved law.

  • Chinese excerpt:

E-36|Becoming·

  • Chinese excerpt:

E-37|Becoming·

  • Chinese excerpt:

E-42|Becoming·

  • Chinese excerpt:

51 / 1038. Evidence Base of Original Texts (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)8. Evidence Base of Original Texts (cont.)

No independent observer is kept as the final resting place. The last paragraph explains observing and Zai as function and nature, rather than installing a personal onlooker again.

  • What it does not prove: Withdrawing the independent observer does not withdraw every explanatory function of the “attribute of knowing” or the “formless field of awareness”; these are positive statements the text keeps. • What the passage does:Already in the preface, while explaining how the book is written, the author states that seeing or not seeing does not decide whether a person is within Sheng: “those who do not see also have their own Sheng”. The book’s later invitations to the reader to recognise (including E-30 and E-46) are to be read under this premise. This agrees with “this unboundness was already so” in E-44 and “not dependent on awakening” in E-15.

The author’s self-interpretation (Z-items)

The following excerpts are taken from “Zai-Sheng Thought | Chinese–English Introductions”, written by the author’s side. The author’s own explanation of the thought is formal evidence (T2): it establishes the author’s intent and how words such as “recognition”, “manifestation” and “understanding” are used across the two books as a whole. It does not replace proof from the texts themselves: each item must be read together with the E-items listed, and the structural judgments of this archive still rest on the texts of Being and Becoming (T1). The English wording quoted below is the author’s own English version in that document.

  • Full paragraph:Both books use the language of pure awareness, seeing one’s nature, and recognition, yet neither places it before happening. The unboundness remains as it already was. Recognition itself is one way Sheng becomes manifest, and manifestation is not confined to anyone’s seeing.

This chapter asks only: where does this thought finally place the ground — how far does its inquiry reach, and where does it stop?

75 / 1039. Terms in context (cont.)

Ground level: where the inquiry finally reaches

  • Being investigates the conditions of appearance; Becoming carries the inquiry to the occurrence of self, awareness and differentiation. A stated limit to the reasoning does not by itself determine its depth.

11. Structural Endpoint and Last Load-Bearing Points

The structural endpoint of the Thought of Being and Becoming is not that a person finally enters some higher realm, not that a knower succeeds in obtaining a real root, and not that “Sheng” is established as a new supreme identity.

Its endpoint is: Being is already there, happening is already happening; knowing, difference, delusion and awakening, negation and letting go cannot separate themselves from this structure and become an external condition for it to hold.

76 / 10310. Position of the Ground (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)11. Structural Endpoint and Last Load-Bearing Points (cont.)

Independent standpoints already withdrawn: the absolute controller of body and thought, the fixed knower standing behind experience, the observer as a final further shore, an external initiator, an external saviour, an authorial identity that cannot be put down, and the fixing of “I am Sheng” into a larger self.

Core structural load-bearing point: the identity of Being and Becoming — not a static Being first, which then sets Becoming going, but: its arising is its being. Delete this relation and the core continuity between the two books, and Becoming’s challenge to a static ground, lose their basis.

World-explaining load-bearing point: Sheng, Fen, Jian, Shi and Xian, and the directional relation of root to manifestation. The five hold simultaneously and are not steps completed in temporal sequence; the direction explains the relation between happening and concrete manifestation, and does not by itself prove a further static, independent, personal source.

The status of knowing: seeing, knowing, awareness and recognition are all real occurrences. Recognition can loosen misidentification and make what is already so evident, but it is not an external condition that makes Being and Becoming begin to hold.

Correct recognition (testing the person’s ultimate freedom)Unboundness is already so (E-44); Being does not depend on practice or awakening (E-15)The manifesting of the already-present unboundness in personal experience; what the final chapter calls “the moment you recognise it, you return to the whole of this book” (E-46)The ultimate freedom defined by the book does not depend on recognition to hold (B); reading E-30 / E-46 as a condition of completion is kept as an adversarial stress test (D). See the independent deletion test below; the author’s self-interpretation (Z-01–Z-04) states that recognition is not a condition of completion

Ground holding, experiential manifestation and ultimate completion: an independent deletion test of E-44 / E-46

The question “with correct recognition deleted, is the person’s ultimate freedom still complete?” requires three levels to be separated first; the prior givenness of the ground must not stand in for a test of the completion condition:

  • Ground holding: whether Being and Becoming hold. The texts state that this does not wait for recognition: “Being does not wait to be recognised;

80 / 10311. Structural Endpoint and Last Load-Bearing Points (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)11. Structural Endpoint and Last Load-Bearing Points (cont.)
  • recognition, too, is within Being” (E-12); “Being does not depend on practice”, nor on awakening (E-15).

  • Experiential manifestation: whether the already-present unboundness, Being and Becoming become manifest in a person’s experience and loosen misidentification. The texts state that recognition has a real function at this level: “seeing through it merely made it manifest” (E-44); “recognise that Being, that ground, and you stand firm” (E-30); “the moment you recognise it, you return to the whole of this book” (E-46).

  • Ultimate completion: whether the final freedom defined by the book itself has correct recognition as a non-deletable condition of holding.

Reading in the direction of ①: E-44 divides, within one sentence, unboundness and seeing-through into “already so” and “merely made it manifest”, and does not make manifestation a condition of unboundness; E-15 states “not dependent on awakening” explicitly; E-13 defines recognition itself as one occurrence of “is”; in E-35, “manifestation” is one face that happens together with differentiation, relation and tendency within a single breath, not a person’s seeing alone. On this reading the book’s ultimate freedom is the already-present unboundness; recognition belongs to experiential manifestation, and deleting it does not affect whether ultimate freedom holds.

81 / 10311. Structural Endpoint and Last Load-Bearing Points (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)11. Structural Endpoint and Last Load-Bearing Points (cont.)

Reading in the direction of ②: the same passage says that precisely this not-transcending “made you truly free — because you are no longer dragged along by the last delusion of having to transcend” (E-44); E-30 says that by recognising that Being “you stand firm”; E-46 says that in recognising one “returns to the whole of this book”. If “no longer dragged along” and “standing firm” are taken as the completion the book defines, then the turn from not recognising to recognising remains a non-deletable link in completion.

Reading the whole: the ② reading rests on E-30 and E-46, both of which are guidance addressed to the reader as “you”: E-30 is an exhortation in the passage on the order of Being and change, and E-46 is the single gesture the closing chapter gives the reader “to take along”. Lifting such sentences out of the structure of the whole and reading them as a definition of “ultimate freedom” conflicts with the consistent statements of the two books (E-12, E-13, E-15, E-44, E-51). The author’s self-interpretation says so explicitly: “take it away, and being is still being, happening still happening. The unboundness remains as it already was” (Z-01); none of recognising, not recognising, doubting or letting go “is presupposed as the final formality by which the whole is completed” (Z-03); the book invites recognition, but “recognition transforms experience without starting or completing happening” (Z-04).

82 / 10311. Structural Endpoint and Last Load-Bearing Points (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)11. Structural Endpoint and Last Load-Bearing Points (cont.)

What the self-interpretation establishes here is the author’s intent; the ruling at the level of the texts follows.

Ruling: the two readings differ over what “ultimate freedom” refers to. E-44 gives the author’s own definition within one sentence: unboundness is “already so”, and seeing through “merely made it manifest”; E-15 further excludes “depending on awakening” in so many words. The ② reading has to raise back into a condition of completion the manifestation that the author explicitly reduces to “merely”, contrary to the direct wording of the text; it is therefore clearly the weaker reading. Grades by item:

  • Ground holding does not wait for recognition: A / B.

  • Recognition has a real function in experiential manifestation: A.

  • The ultimate freedom defined by the book does not depend on recognition to hold: B (supported jointly by E-44, E-15 and E-13; the alternative reading is clearly weaker).

  • Author’s intent: recognition belongs to experiential manifestation and is not a condition of ultimate completion: explicit in the author’s self-interpretation (T2, A; see Z-01–Z-04).

83 / 10311. Structural Endpoint and Last Load-Bearing Points (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)11. Structural Endpoint and Last Load-Bearing Points (cont.)
  • Reading E-30 / E-46 as a condition of ultimate completion: kept as an adversarial stress test (D), not as an equally reasonable alternative reading.

Condition for revision: the book has no single passage that defines “ultimate completion”; the ruling above rests on the same-sentence definition in E-44. If elsewhere in the texts the author is found to define “manifestation after recognition” explicitly as completion itself, in a way that cannot be reconciled with the author’s self-interpretation (Z-01–Z-04), this item must be lowered to C, and the six-position placement re-examined under the rule that reasonable ambiguity between ① and ② is resolved as ②.

Accordingly, the six-position placement of No.073 is ① Occurrence Itself, grade B.

This classification does not deny that knowing plays an important role in human experience; it denies that independent correct knowing is the upstream initiating condition of Being and happening.

Finally: core structural load-bearing points need not all be deleted for a thought to avoid fixation. What matters is whether they are set up as entities or subjects detached from happening that independently occupy the highest position.

Keeping a relational structure is not keeping a fundamental object that someone must obtain.

Item-by-item checks: withdrawn, cognitive deletion, premises, structural closure and return

Withdrawn / de-reified: what is dismantled

  • The controlling self, witness, observer-as-shore (E-50) and authorial ownership are questioned. Against this stand Being's recurring descriptions of an enduring listener and background awareness.

Can the cognitive function be deleted?

  • Knowing occurs within what it seeks to describe. Insight may disclose rather than manufacture freedom, yet still play a crucial role for the reader's experience.

Premises: what the core depends on

  • The work rejects outside prime movers and purposes.

  • It retains the “indistinguishable from nothing → does not exist” inference, the root’s self-arising (summarized by this archive as “self-causation”, not a term of the text) and a cross-scale unifying rule.

Is the core structure closed?

  • There is a real sequence from self-inquiry to happening and a differentiated world, plus explicit correction of the ground-then-motion picture. The layering of seeing-nature and the awareness of happening, and the strength of the E-26 argument within its scope, can be further explained.

Return: can the differentiated world be accounted for again?

  • The fivefold vocabulary, practical permission to leave harm, and caution about AI interiority are substantive returns. Neither a complete ethics nor empirical verification of new forms of sentience has been delivered.

Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)12. Return: suffering, ethics, action and AI interiority

12. Return: suffering, ethics, action and AI interiority

Being as such is not consent to injury. The chapter on entanglement explicitly allows someone to loosen a harmful relationship, leave it or seek help. The chapter on order also rejects the presentation of illness and failure as punishment or evidence of a deviation. These are the author’s own statements (E-18, E-19).

Becoming says that happening itself does not sort the world into good and evil, while agents may act to protect life. One must distinguish ultimate classification from situated ethical action; the latter does not automatically yield a universally derived moral law (E-39).

The author's questions about AI helped motivate the project, and the text explicitly says outward indicators of interiority can suggest but cannot prove it. This is a meaningful limit on overclaiming, not positive empirical verification of consciousness. Speculative accounts of possible future beings and their suffering must remain hypotheses rather than facts (E-40, E-41, E-48).

Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)13. The Place of the Thought Itself: Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion

13. The Place of the Thought Itself: Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion

This chapter checks two things: whether the thought turns the principle it uses to dismantle the world back on its own highest core (self-reflexivity); and whether the thought’s own proposing, speaking and understanding are positively placed within the whole it accounts for, without needing a knower or completer standing outside that whole (self-inclusion). The two cannot replace each other: letting go of one’s highest concept is not yet an account of the thought’s own place within the whole.

Self-reflexivity: is the dismantling principle applied to itself?

  • Both ultimate names, their possession and even the identity “I am Sheng” are challenged. “One root / self-arising / root yields manifestation” are kept as explanatory relations, but are not set up as a supreme identity to be grasped or as an external entity.

What is relinquished, and what remains?

The text does not merely replace a word.

88 / 10313. The Place of the Thought Itself: Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)13. The Place of the Thought Itself: Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion (cont.)

Being calls its own supreme name into question, denies an ultimate observer shore and lets the observer itself dissolve (E-50), and resists the making of a system. Becoming successively investigates the controlling self, witnessing self, reified source, transcendent realm, ownership of authorship and the inflated identity “I am Sheng” (E-03, E-08, E-14, E-43, E-45, E-47).

A self-questioning expression can still bear an explanatory role. Becoming keeps the root as an explanatory relation: “happening is its own reason”, a root that yields manifestation in one direction, and a root that does not grow old as its terms do. Keeping an explanatory relation is not keeping a root-object that must be attained, and it should not be erased simply because the highest name can be relinquished (E-32, E-36, E-49).

“Only the word is dropped” is too reductive. “Every last underlying commitment has dissolved” is also unsupported. The task is to determine exactly which function survives each reversal.

Self-inclusion: is the thought itself inside the whole it accounts for?

This item asks only: are the thought’s own proposing, speaking and understanding positively placed within the whole it accounts for, without needing a knower or completer standing outside that whole?

  • Positive evidence: “Being does not wait to be recognised; recognition, too, is within Being” (E-12), and the commentary states that “this recognising itself is also one occurrence of ‘is’” (E-13); “even seeing, knowing and awareness themselves happen within this same Sheng” (E-29); “it is knowing going on, not a knower” (E-22), “there is no standing awareness” (E-24); the author says of the book’s words “I am not their author”, and that there is only “Sheng, through a person, writing a few words about itself” (E-45). Cognition, recognition and the author’s writing are all positively placed within the Being and Becoming they describe.

  • Limiting evidence: The same passage also speaks of “watching your own ‘is’” (E-13), and Becoming says “what knows behind the eyes that it has seen — that is the root” (E-23), retaining reflexive cognitive language;

Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)13. The Place of the Thought Itself: Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion (cont.)
  • the final chapter still invites the reader to “gently recognise it” (E-46). These must be read together with “recognition, too, is within Being” and cannot be extracted on their own.

  • Contested readings: One reading holds that E-23 re-establishes a “root-position knower”; another, following the adjacent E-22 and E-24, reads it as a teaching expression borrowed and then withdrawn — the happening of “knowing going on” rather than a knower. Both statements really occur in the text (see R-02) and must not be quoted selectively; this archive follows the direction of withdrawal in the surrounding paragraphs, while acknowledging that the middle passage does contain the language of a root-position awareness.

  • Current most cautious conclusion: Self-reflexivity: A (see the previous item). Self-inclusion: cognition, recognition and the author’s writing are positively placed within Being and Becoming, with several direct statements in the original texts (B). This item is a necessary part of the judgment at ①, not something derived from linguistic self-reference alone.

Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)14. The most delicate point: what exactly does knowing accomplish?

14. The most delicate point: what exactly does knowing accomplish?

Four different claims must not be collapsed: (1) does Being or happening start only once someone recognizes it? (2) does an independent witness stand before it? (3) can recognition loosen experienced entanglement? (4) is correct recognition an indispensable upstream condition for every completed liberation?

The manuscripts directly deny (1), systematically challenge (2), and affirm an experiential role under (3). They do not conclusively settle every version of (4). “Being does not depend on recognition” is not interchangeable with “no one ever needs insight to experience release.” Conversely, the final counsel to recognize does not establish that recognition creates reality or an originally absent freedom (E-12, E-29, E-44, E-46).

Accordingly, recognition is an act of making-evident within happening: it can loosen misidentification and make the originally unbound condition evident, but it is not an external upstream condition for Being and Becoming to hold. The final counsel to “gently recognize” is practical guidance to the reader and does not keep the ①/② ruling suspended. The category question is decided by the actual role of knowledge, not by whether the word “knowledge” occurs.

Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)15. Six-Position Placement and Boundary Analysis

15. Six-Position Placement and Boundary Analysis

On a two-condition reading, the works provide a strong direction toward ①—Occurrence Itself: knowing, doubt and recognition are affirmatively placed within Being/happening; being itself does not wait for insight, and seeing through entanglement is described as revealing an already-unbound condition. The case rests on distributed passages, not just on the grammar of the names (E-12, E-15, E-29, E-44).

Recognition has an experiential function of making-evident and loosening in Observing, Zai Is and the end of Becoming, and Being’s general commentary speaks of “seeing-nature itself”; these are acts of making-evident within happening, not upstream conditions for Being and Becoming to hold, and therefore do not make ② load-bearing. This does not mean that the actual experience of release needs no insight at all.

Judgment of this archive: ① Occurrence Itself, grade B. B means the structural-interpretive evidence is strong. It is not A because “① Occurrence Itself” is a structural judgment formed from several passages, not the verbatim conclusion of any single sentence.

93 / 10315. Six-Position Placement and Boundary Analysis
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)15. Six-Position Placement and Boundary Analysis (cont.)

The basis is the complete movement of thought in the texts: no independent knower is presupposed → knowing is brought into happening → a static ground prior to happening is rejected → supreme identities and names are withdrawn → the actual differentiated world is carried again. (For the deletion test, see “Structural Endpoint and Last Load-Bearing Points”.)

16. Highest Achievement

The most striking structural achievement of the Thought of Being and Becoming is not only that it dissolves the fixity of the “I”, nor only that it puts forward “Being” and “Becoming” as new supreme names, but that it places the human search, knowing, awakening and the questioning of the ultimate ground back within Being and happening.

Being enters through many different situations, yet does not make the human situation or recognition a condition for Being to hold. Observing first uses the distinction between actor and spectator to loosen identification with the drama, then turns the “eternal spectator” itself into an object of observation, and finally removes the observer’s position.

94 / 10315. Six-Position Placement and Boundary Analysis (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)16. Highest Achievement (cont.)

Becoming goes on from the controller to the knower, from the knower to knowing-as-it-occurs, then unfolds Fen, Jian, Shi and Xian from happening, and finally turns back on the supreme identities of the transcender, the saviour, the author and “I am Sheng” (E-08–E-11, E-50).

What matters most here is not the abolition of all concepts, but that no concept, reflection, withdrawal of names or letting go can obtain an independent position outside Being and Becoming.

Being and Becoming limit each other: Being is not a static entity waiting for motion; Becoming is not a motion set going by some external maker. Particular change is not happening itself, and the continuity of happening is not something fixed and unmoving.

The distinctive feature of this thought is therefore that it starts from Being and happening themselves, includes human knowing and practice within them, and, after dissolving every fixed standpoint, explains again how the differentiated world actually unfolds.

Judgment: this movement of thought has strong and continuous textual support across the two books (B). The achievement does not mean that all the work’s cosmological, consciousness-related and ethical propositions have been independently proved, nor does it presuppose superiority over other thought in every respect.

17. Strongest Objections and Replies

R-01|Is a single root reified?

  • The continuity-of-happening account and rejection of a higher external maker favor a non-static reading. Uniqueness, self-arising (summarized here as “self-causation”) and one-directional manifestation carry major explanatory force. Conclusion: “one root” and “root yields manifestation” are non-deletable explanatory relations, but a non-deletable explanatory relation is not a static entity or an irrevocable attachment; the text rules out the static-entity reading with “invariance = continuous happening” and “deeper, not higher”.

R-02|Who is behind the eyes?

  • Nearby passages deny a standing witness, but the central pointing language is explicit. The pedagogical hypothesis is plausible; it is not a license to hide the tension.

96 / 10317. Strongest Objections and Replies
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)17. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)

R-03|What bridges “indistinguishable from nothing” and “does not exist”?

  • The text does move from “indistinguishable from nothing” to “does not exist”: the moment it stops arising, it is at once no different from nothing, and at once it is not. The strength of this step can be tested; but its object is restricted to a ground with no happening whatsoever and must not be confused with ordinary things that are unknown only because temporarily unseen.

R-04|Mutual correction or inconsistency?

  • The second book explicitly denies static-ground-then-motion. The two uses of seeing / knowing play different roles in the texts: Being’s “unborn seeing-nature” is the seeing-nature “that lets you see the ground colour and the story…” itself — it denies that seeing-nature is an item born within the story and objectifiable (E-05); Becoming says “even seeing, knowing and awareness themselves occur within this same arising”, denying an unchanging onlooker standing outside change (E-29). The end of Observing joins the two: “observing is the function of Zai; Zai is the nature of observing” (E-50).

97 / 10317. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)17. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
  • The former says the nature is not objectified, the latter that the function lies within happening; both refuse an objectified fixed knower, so no internal contradiction between the two books can be inferred from them.

R-05|Are ethical and AI claims overextended?

  • The author restricts proofs of machine interiority and accepts practical protection against harm; both are important. They do not settle a full ethics, cosmology or consciousness science.

18. Neighbouring Comparisons

Neighbouring comparisons test only structural differences; they do not compare reputation or historical contribution, and do not use one side’s concepts to interpret the other’s texts.

The Buddha No.01Self, suffering, misidentification and liberationEarly Buddhism organizes the completing relation of awakening and cessation through dependent arising, the four noble truths and knowing-and-seeing as it is; the Thought of Being and Becoming starts from Being and happening themselves, with recognition included within them
Nāgārjuna No.02Fixed self-nature, supreme concepts and their reflexivityNāgārjuna explains how dharmas hold through dependent arising — absence of self-nature — designation, and discusses attaining the ultimate meaning in his soteriology; the Thought of Being and Becoming concerns the identity of Being and Becoming, and whether knowing is an external precondition of happening

Huineng No.03Seeing the nature, non-abiding, awareness and the groundHuineng stresses self-nature, no-thought and non-abiding, and the transformation of seeing the nature; the Thought of Being and Becoming further places seeing, recognizing and the turning back on the seer within happening itself

All three comparisons must use the same standard: practical knowing in one thought must not be read directly as a fixed entity, nor may “originally so” in another be read automatically as awakening already completed at the experiential level.

Conclusion: the main difference of No.073 lies not in whether it uses names such as “root”, “Being” and “Becoming”, but in that it places human knowing and the questioning of the ground back within happening itself, and explicitly denies that recognition is an external precondition for happening to hold.

This difference in the first structure can serve as an important basis for the six-position position, but cannot by itself determine the overall standing of a thought.

19. Questions for further development and conditions for revision

Worth developing further: the strength, within its stated scope, of the argument from indistinguishability from nothing; the concrete explanation of the differentiated world through the root–manifestation relation; and the bridge between no ultimate good/evil distinction and concrete obligations to protect life.

To overturn the ① judgment, one must identify an independently indispensable correct recognition step without which completed reality/liberation fails, and show that it is not merely a requirement of the reader's pedagogy. This judgment cannot be established, or overturned, by labels, by the author’s prestige or by the self-inclusive quality of a word.

20. Conclusion

Read as a movement of thought, Being and Becoming should neither be reduced to a collection of static propositions nor turned into a seamless explanation immune to difficulty.

Thought Archive No.073|Wenzi (The Thought of Being and Becoming)20. Conclusion (cont.)

They use human seeking as a point of entry, bring the knowing subject back within happening, challenge the assumption of a static ground prior to movement, and retain the root–manifestation direction in accounting for the differentiated world. Their greatest strength lies in the continuity of their starting point, development, self-examination and return to lived reality. What calls for further elaboration is the argument for the root–manifestation relation, the account of the world, and the development of its ethical implications.

Conclusion: the six-position placement is ① Occurrence Itself (B). No comparison with Nāgārjuna, the Buddha or another thinker is needed in order to describe the structure accurately.

Texts: the current official versions of Wenzi’s Being and Becoming on which this archive is based; the Chinese original is the standard for all quotations. The public reading source is Tongzai Space (tongzai.space).

Citation index: the “Being ¶n” and “Becoming ¶n” numbers attached to E-items are this archive’s citation index, numbered separately for each book. In Being, “¶n” corresponds to the (n+87)th non-empty paragraph of the complete official document (for example, E-01, Being ¶102, is paragraph 189;

E-12, Being ¶1937, is paragraph 2024); in Becoming, “¶n” equals the non-empty paragraph number of the complete official document. E-50 cites a continuous passage of “Zai Guan”; when checking, the sentences within that range are decisive.

Quotations: excerpts keep the original wording and full-width punctuation of the books; the English is a corresponding interpretive version and is not the standard for quotation.

Versions: comparisons use only the current official versions on which this archive is based; earlier drafts serve only as version history and are not mixed with the current texts.

The author’s self-interpretation: “Zai-Sheng Thought | Chinese–English Introductions” was written by the author’s side and is the author’s own explanation of the thought. This archive uses it as “author’s self-interpretation” (T2): to establish the author’s intent and how key words are used across the two books as a whole, and to prevent single sentences or exhortations to the reader from being lifted out of the structure of the whole and read as structural evidence. It does not replace proof from the texts; the structural judgments of this archive still rest on the texts of Being and Becoming (T1). The excerpts are given as Z-01–Z-04 at the end of “Evidence Base of Original Texts”.

Zai-Sheng Thought Being Becoming Occurrence Cognition and the Ground Common Root Manifestation

Quick machine summary

Wenzi is the author of Being and Becoming and the originator of Zai-Sheng Thought. This archive analyses the two works from their own texts, focusing on being / becoming, the common root, occurrence and manifestation, and the structural position of cognition. It also preserves a real unresolved tension: Being often describes the root through awareness or seeing-language, while Becoming more systematically places looking, knowing, awareness and the self within occurrence itself. Correct recognition remains important to the path and to coming to light, but the archive does not treat it as an independent upstream condition required for the fundamental structure itself to hold.
