Archival statement: this archive verifies a limited range according to the electronic sources listed in Chapter 16; “checked” corresponds only to the passages and language marked card by card, and unchecked chapters keep a note of missing evidence. Judgements concern the overall structure of the classic and its commentaries or of the author’s works, and are not settled on isolated sentences.

02 / 36Front-Page Identification (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle1. Person Overview

1. Person Overview

One-line placement: ② Directly seeing the ground (B); ⑤ Experiencing the world as a competing direction (C); ① is a hypothesis awaiting verification (D). Tolle takes “the Now / presence” and awareness disidentified from thinking as the core practice of liberation, and repeatedly distinguishes the ground of being that is already there from the transformation of consciousness that still has to happen. Recognizing or abiding in presence is not mere teaching ornament, so at present it is placed in ② (B).

Most distinctive point: it takes the felt split of psychological identification as the entrance: a person discovers that the “I” that keeps narrating and the “self” being narrated are not the same, and then uses stillness, the sense of the body, relationships and action to explain a non-conceptual present.

Final load-bearing point: the functional chain “awareness—disidentification—presence”, not a fixed substantial observer. Delete the continuing function of recognition and presence, and his account of freedom from suffering loses its decisive mechanism of transformation.

Most subtle point: whether “you already have it” suffices to make awareness deletable. The author at the same time stresses that readers need inner recognition; original presence cannot replace his condition of ultimate completion.

03 / 361. Person Overview
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle2. Reading Notes|Levels of Evidence and Judgement

2. Reading Notes|Levels of Evidence and Judgement

This archive distinguishes the reliability of the text from the strength of structural judgement. T1 is primary direct material whose authorship or textual layer is reliable; T2 is a reliable translation or transmission, a later textual layer, or the author’s own commentary; T3 is material whose attribution, edition or representativeness is substantively disputed; T4 is later research and reception history, which may not pose as the figure’s own original text. The T-grade of a figure must be specified according to the textual tradition concerned.

A = a textual fact stated by the original; B = a structural inference supported by several pieces of reliable direct material, with weaker reasonable alternative readings; C = grounded, with an equally reasonable alternative reading; D = a counter-pressure test / a hypothesis awaiting verification. T1 is not the same as A, and the A of a checked original sentence does not automatically make a structural interpretation A; verification status is recorded independently, and missing evidence awaiting checking is not replaced by D.

Role of evidence: supporting = supports the present six-position judgement; limiting = shows a non-deletable mediation or an evidential boundary;

04 / 362. Reading Notes|Levels of Evidence and Judgement
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle2. Reading Notes|Levels of Evidence and Judgement (cont.)

disputed = the material points substantively in different directions; neutral = the text exists, but is not sufficient to constitute a key limit in the present deletion test. ① must positively place cognition and thought itself, and pass the test of the complete structure after the function of “right cognition of the ground” is deleted.

3. Textual Scope and Method

Main texts: The Power of Now; Practicing the Power of Now; Stillness Speaks; A New Earth; Oneness With All Life (checked through excerpts on the author’s website)

Text level: the text of the books (including the introductions printed in the original books) is listed as T1 under the author’s name; later new forewords and the author’s notes to selected editions are cited as T2, the author’s self-commentary. T1 / T2 indicate the evidential status of the source of the text and of the author’s intention, while A—D indicate the certainty of the specific structural inferences based on them. The continuous introductions from the original books published on the website can serve as checked direct textual evidence, but website excerpts are not a chapter-by-chapter check of the whole books; B must be supported by several mutually echoing checked statements, and cannot be obtained from a single exhortation to the reader.

05 / 362. Reading Notes|Levels of Evidence and Judgement (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle3. Textual Scope and Method (cont.)

Scope of verification: the continuous original introduction to The Power of Now, the introductions to Practicing the Power of Now and Stillness Speaks, and the author’s forewords to A New Earth and Oneness With All Life, as published on the author’s website, have been checked; all the main texts have not yet been compared chapter by chapter. The direct load-bearing point of ② (B) is the continuous account in the introduction to The Power of Now of “recognizing false identification—transformation of consciousness” (E-01—E-04), cross-supported by the forewords of other works and the author’s self-commentary; publication on the website cannot be equated with a complete check of the whole books; personal healing narratives are not treated as evidence of universal therapeutic effect.

4. Core Question and Structure of Thought

Core research question: even if “Being / the Now” is there without depending on human cognition, do human awareness, presence and withdrawal from identification with thinking still constitute a non-deletable function of liberation?

1. The author recounts the crack in thinking, “I cannot live with myself any longer” (E-01).

06 / 363. Textual Scope and Method (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle4. Core Question and Structure of Thought (cont.)

2. He turns to a lucid, peaceful state without thinking, later explained as the withdrawal of identification with a fictitious self (E-02, E-03).

3. He explains that what is sought already exists but is ordinarily obscured by noise (E-04).

4. Words are not the end point, but signposts that bring about a transformation of insight in the reader (E-05, E-06).

5. Presence and inner recognition are repeatedly specified as the effect of practice (E-07, E-08).

6. He extends the transformation of personal identification to a world practice at the levels of relationships, conflict and groups (E-09—E-12).

5. Original-Text Evidence Base

This archive comprises E-01—E-12. T1—T4 indicate the source, attribution and representativeness of the material; A—D indicate the strength of judgement the material supports, and a checked original sentence (textual A) does not automatically make a structural interpretation A. Verified short phrases are listed only when actually checked; cases where the original language is unchecked, only a translation is checked, or only chapter titles are checked are stated separately.

07 / 364. Core Question and Structure of Thought (cont.)

The direction of evidence is supporting / limiting / disputed / neutral; repeating one general conclusion across different cards cannot replace analysis.

E-01|The Power of Now, introduction: discovering the split in the self

  • Text level: T1|The Power of Now, autobiographical passage of the introduction|English excerpt on the author’s website checked

  • Verified short phrase in the English original: I cannot live with myself any longer.

  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The author realizes that a commonly said sentence implies a split between “I” and “myself”, and from this questions habitual self-identification.

  • Structural role here: Supporting ② (B): shows the key entrance at which awareness is changing self-identification, but does not prove that discovering the sentence itself completes the whole teaching.

  • What it does not prove: A single autobiographical account cannot be taken as repeatable evidence of clinical therapeutic effect.

  • Location and electronic parallel: The Power of Now, autobiographical passage of the introduction; source number S1 (URL in Chapter 16).

E-02|The Power of Now, introduction: thinking stops, lucidity remains

  • Text level: T1|The Power of Now, narrative of transformation in the introduction|English excerpt on the author’s website checked

  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The author narrates that after a profound awareness his thinking stopped while consciousness remained lucid, followed by an experience of peace and freshness towards things around him.

09 / 365. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Structural role here: Supporting ② (B): awareness is not the same as continuous conceptual thinking, and “right recognition” still bears load as an event of transformation.

  • What it does not prove: It cannot be proved from this that the ontological structure of the world is created by that private experience.

  • Location and electronic parallel: The Power of Now, narrative of transformation in the introduction; source number S1 (URL in Chapter 16).

E-03|The Power of Now, introduction: fictitious identification and ever-present consciousness

10 / 365. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): Looking back on the experience, the author holds that the suffering self is a construction of identification with thinking, and that the so-called true nature is consciousness not covered by identification with form.

  • Structural role here: Disputed (C): offers ① a candidate of a “prior ground”, but one must still see whether present awareness is non-deletable for completion.

  • What it does not prove: “Consciousness prior to identification with form” cannot be read directly as a proven proposition of neuroscience or cosmology.

  • Location and electronic parallel: The Power of Now, explanation in the later part of the introduction; source number S1 (URL in Chapter 16).

E-04|The Power of Now, introduction: you already have it

  • Text level: T1|The Power of Now, passage of the introduction on the formation of the teaching|English excerpt on the author’s website checked

  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The author explains to those seeking teaching that the goal is not to add something new, but that what is obscured by the noise of the mind already exists.

  • Structural role here: Supports that the ground is not produced by new cognition; limits mistaking “already there” for both deletions of ① having been passed.

  • What it does not prove: It cannot be inferred from the object being already there that the transformation of insight is wholly deletable for this thought.

  • Location and electronic parallel: The Power of Now, passage of the introduction on the formation of the teaching; source number S1 (URL in Chapter 16).

E-05|The Power of Now, note to the reader: language as stepping stones

  • Text level: T1|The Power of Now, The Truth That Is Within You|English excerpt on the author’s website checked

  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): In the section “The Truth That Is Within You” the author urges readers not to cling to terms; the same continuous introduction also says explicitly that unless one learns to recognize the false self and see it as not oneself, there can be no lasting transformation. This is an adjacent statement in the original book on its own self-explanation and on the relation of transformation, not an isolated slogan.

  • Structural role here: Supporting reflexivity (B) and providing adjacent structural evidence for ②: terms can be withdrawn, but the function of recognizing false identification cannot be deleted in this introduction; letting go of words cannot replace the deletion test of the relation of cognitive completion.

13 / 365. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • What it does not prove: It cannot be inferred from “terms should be let go” that the thought no longer depends on cognitive transformation.

  • Location and electronic parallel: The Power of Now, The Truth That Is Within You; source number S1 (URL in Chapter 16).

E-06|Practicing the Power of Now, introduction: awakening as practice

  • Text level: T1|Practicing the Power of Now, Introduction|English excerpt on the author’s website checked

  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The author explicitly organizes short passages and exercises as an entrance to practice: slow reading, stillness and inner transformation rather than further accumulation of information.

  • Structural role here: Supporting ② (B): the shift of attention as a way in is explicit, but it must be examined separately from the final condition.

14 / 365. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • What it does not prove: An exhortation to the reader alone cannot prove that all readers must awaken in the same temporal sequence.

  • Location and electronic parallel: Practicing the Power of Now, Introduction; source number S2 (URL in Chapter 16).

E-07|Stillness Speaks, introduction: not a transmission of information

  • Text level: T1|Stillness Speaks, Introduction|English excerpt on the author’s website checked

  • Verified short phrase in the English original: The words are no more than signposts.

  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The author explicitly distinguishes the pointing of words from the inner peace pointed to; language turns people towards their own depth.

15 / 365. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Structural role here: Supporting ② (B): the purpose of language is to bring about the reader’s recognition, showing that “whether one can recognize” bears load in the actual task of the thought.

  • What it does not prove: “Not in the words” cannot be taken to mean there is no testable structural statement.

  • Location and electronic parallel: Stillness Speaks, Introduction; source number S3 (URL in Chapter 16).

E-08|Stillness Speaks, introduction: writing and stillness of one source

  • Text level: T1|Stillness Speaks, last paragraph of the Introduction|English excerpt on the author’s website checked

  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The author reflects that the words of the book become thoughts as they are read, but claims they can lead people back to the stillness from which they came.

16 / 365. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Structural role here: Supporting a candidate for local self-inclusion (C): the text specifies the source and destination of its own utterance; the complete ① still needs an independent deletion test.

  • What it does not prove: It cannot be held, on one self-commentary about the source of writing, that all understanding has been sufficiently explained in an independent structure.

  • Location and electronic parallel: Stillness Speaks, last paragraph of the Introduction; source number S3 (URL in Chapter 16).

E-09|A New Earth, author’s foreword: consciousness and social action

  • Text level: T2|A New Earth, foreword to the new edition on the website (author’s self-commentary)|English text on the author’s website checked

17 / 365. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The author connects personal and collective self-identification, holding that a change of consciousness can change patterns of hostile and conflictual behaviour.

  • Structural role here: Supporting ②’s return and a ④ dimension (B/C): presence is not feeling behind closed doors; the author takes relationships and public life as its effects.

  • What it does not prove: The book’s predictions of social trends cannot be treated as already rigorously proved by statistics.

  • Location and electronic parallel: A New Earth, foreword to the new edition on the website (author’s self-commentary); source number S4 (URL in Chapter 16).

E-10|A New Earth, author’s foreword: attention to the present

18 / 365. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The author asks readers to place their attention fully in the one present, and calls this inner alignment and the arising of a new earth.

  • Structural role here: Supporting ② (B): attention is not an arbitrary embellishment; at the same time one must guard against an exhortation, not checked against the structure of the whole book, being taken as an independent definition.

  • What it does not prove: ① cannot be held from the word “Now” alone, nor can it be inferred that real time does not exist.

  • Location and electronic parallel: A New Earth, last paragraph of the new-edition foreword on the website; source number S4 (URL in Chapter 16).

E-11|Oneness With All Life, foreword: the condition of recognition

19 / 365. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)

  • Verified short phrase in the English original: Only Spirit can recognize Spirit.

  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The author says explicitly that without inner recognition the words are only abstract concepts; recognition lets the awakened consciousness he speaks of emerge.

  • Structural role here: Limiting ① (B): a self-commentary by the author bearing directly on the necessity of completion, which must be read together with E-01—E-07 to become structural evidence.

  • What it does not prove: Spirit cannot be taken as an independent entity confirmed by physics.

  • Location and electronic parallel: Oneness With All Life, foreword on the website; source number S5 (URL in Chapter 16).

E-12|Oneness With All Life, foreword: reading and transformation

  • Text level: T2|Oneness With All Life, earlier part of the foreword on the website|English text on the author’s website checked

  • Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The author says that excerpt-style writing aims at deepening presence, not at quantity of knowledge; the use of reading depends on whether an inner response can occur in the subject.

  • Structural role here: Disputed (C): overlaps with ⑤’s dimension of experience, but the text repeatedly points experience towards insight, rather than remaining in an aesthetic atmosphere.

  • What it does not prove: The feelings people report cannot be uniformly raised into a universal condition of completion.

  • Location and electronic parallel: Oneness With All Life, earlier part of the foreword on the website; source number S5 (URL in Chapter 16).

21 / 365. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle6. Key Terms

6. Key Terms

Now|The present / the Now; not a small stretch of calendar time, but the entrance of awareness in the teaching.

presence|Presence; the function of lucid attention not occupied by identification with thought.

Being|Being / what is originally so; the author’s vocabulary of inner depth, whose meaning is not the same as the terms of classical ontology.

awareness|Awareness; noticing thoughts and emotions, rather than being identical with the thoughts themselves.

ego|The structure of self-identification; a sense of “I” continually solidified by personal stories and external identities.

pain-body|Pain-body; the author’s concept for describing accumulated patterns of emotional reaction, not a medical diagnosis.

stillness|Stillness / inner quiet; not drowsy unconsciousness.

identification|Identification; equating oneself with a string of thoughts, emotions or social roles.

inner recognition|Inner recognition; used by the author to measure whether guiding language has taken effect.

22 / 366. Key Terms
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle6. Key Terms (cont.)

form|Form; a general term for thoughts, identities, the body and phenomenal appearances.

7. The Place of the Ground

Positive evidence: Being / the Now that is originally there is the basis of the teaching; suffering comes from equating oneself with constructions of thinking, and awareness and presence can change this identification (E-01—E-04).

Limiting evidence: most of this material comes from introductions and forewords of the books released on the author’s website, not from the full text chapter by chapter; it cannot be claimed that all the conditions of practice in the whole works have been checked item by item.

Disputed reading: ⑤ can stress the experienceability of present sensation and stillness; ① can stress that Being is prior and that there is no permanent substantial seer; but the non-deletable function of direct recognition and presence has more cross-passage support.

Most secure present conclusion: the fundamental “is” is not necessarily established by human cognition, but the completion of “waking up” still cannot do without awareness and inner recognition; provisionally judged ② (B).

23 / 366. Key Terms (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle8. Structural End and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test

8. Structural End and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test

Already withdrawn / de-substantialized: the treatment of personal narrative and ruminating thoughts as an independent entity that is the true self is withdrawn.

Core structural load-bearing points: the relation recognizing identification with thinking → leaving automatic identification → presence / lucidity (E-01—E-07, E-11).

Disputed functional load-bearing point: whether one must enter through some language and practice; the specific means can vary, but the author’s emphasis on awareness itself persists.

Nature of the load-bearing points: a dynamic relation of cognitive / experiential transformation, not an additional substantial seer.

What still holds after deletion: delete the terminology, the teacher or a particular reading practice, and the priority of Being/Now can still be kept.

Where it breaks after deletion: delete “recognizing false identification” as false, and the condition of lasting transformation established in the introduction to The Power of Now, “unless you learn to recognize the false as false ...

24 / 368. Structural End and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle8. Structural End and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test (cont.)

there can be no lasting transformation” (S1, original text adjacent to E-05), is directly lost; the narrative of the split in E-01 can then serve only as personal experience and no longer explains the relation from identification to lucidity. Further delete the inner recognition of E-11, and the chain of conditions in the author’s self-commentary between words and awakening is also broken. The former belongs to the structural layer; specific pauses, reading and bodily exercises belong mainly to the teaching or path layer.

Layer of break: single exercises are mostly at the teaching / path layer; the necessary transformation from identification to presence is at the structural layer in the complete structure of the thought.

Place in the complete ultimate structure: original priority and later recognition are different propositions; the former does not cancel the latter.

Mode of existence after completion: the author does not require a permanently sustained, rigidly fixed observer separate from objects, but still calls present consciousness the basic mode of living.

The place of thought itself: words become thoughts in reading, and are also given the function of pointing back to stillness (E-08); local self-inclusion does not guarantee ①.

25 / 368. Structural End and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle8. Structural End and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test (cont.)

Return: presence changes relationships, compassion, social hostility and responses to conflict (E-09, E-10).

Another reasonable reading: from the social-ethical side of the works, ④ can be a secondary line; from bodily sensation and the experience of stillness, ⑤ also has a strong presence.

Most secure present boundary: original presence is not equated with the cognitive function being deletable, and exhortations to the reader are not set up alone as the definition of the final end.

Judgement grade: ② main class B; ⑤ competition C; ① stress test D.

9. The Place of Thought Itself|Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion

Reflexivity: the author explicitly asks that terms not be taken as the end point, and says words become thoughts in the reader’s mind (E-05, E-08).

Candidate for self-inclusion: E-05 and E-08 write that words may become thoughts and can also point back to stillness, providing a local placement of writing and understanding;

26 / 368. Structural End and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle9. The Place of Thought Itself|Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion (cont.)

but their source and destination still require recognition to occur in the reader, and the whole activity of thought is not sufficiently comprehended in a more basic complete final structure, so ①’s first condition is not counted as passed.

Limit: this placement is mainly the author’s self-commentary rather than a proof of complete structural closure; “only with inner recognition are words not empty” still bears a non-deletable function of transformation (E-11).

Deletion test: remove “right recognition / presence”, and the claim of Being can be kept, but the teaching’s completion of awakening suffers a break at the structural layer; ② still holds, and ① cannot pass on this basis.

10. The Most Subtle Point in This Figure

The difficulty is not whether there is a substantial observer, but whether “knowing that one is not one’s thinking” must still occur in complete awakening.

“You already have it” supports that the ground is not made by cognition; the author at the same time says that words that do not bring about inner recognition can only be concepts (E-04, E-11).

27 / 369. The Place of Thought Itself|Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle10. The Most Subtle Point in This Figure (cont.)

The opposite reading would treat awareness entirely as teaching rhetoric or temporary experience, but would then need to explain why these cross-work self-commentaries consistently place it in the relation of awakening.

At present ② B is most stable; how “pure consciousness” exists is a separate, disputed question of mode of existence, and does not automatically lower the main class to C.

11. Six-Position Placement

② has several pieces of direct material: lucidity after the crack in the self, terms as signposts, and inner recognition making awakening happen (E-01—E-07, E-11).

⑤ takes stillness, bodily feeling, sound and the experience of reading as important modes of presentation, so evidence is not lacking; ⑤ as competition is still C, because E-01—E-07 and E-11 repeatedly direct experience towards the relation of completion of recognizing false identification, awakening and lasting presence, and the independent main task cannot be fixed as ⑤ on the basis of the medium of expression alone.

28 / 3610. The Most Subtle Point in This Figure (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle11. Six-Position Placement (cont.)

Although ① has local candidates in the priority of Being and in language returning to stillness, “utterance placed in the source of stillness” does not mean ①’s first condition is fully passed, and the function of recognition cannot be deleted, so the second condition is not passed either (D); ④’s social-ethical return is a real side line, not the main task.

Final placement: ② Directly seeing the ground (B); ⑤ Experiencing the world as a competing direction (C); ① is a hypothesis awaiting verification (D)

12. Highest Achievement

With a very low conceptual threshold he connects the psychological crack of self-identification to lucid awareness, inner stillness and public relationships, so that his teaching can return from personal experience to everyday communication without relying on complex sectarian vocabulary.

29 / 3611. Six-Position Placement (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle13. Strongest Objections and Replies

13. Strongest Objections and Replies

R-01|Since it is already there, it belongs to ①

  • Strongest counter-reading: The true self is originally present and does not need recognition to be completed, so it should be placed in ①.

  • Adjudicated reply: The author does not make awareness create the origin, but E-01—E-02 and E-11 all regard insight as the human function of awakening; priority and completion may not be confused.

  • Supporting or disputed evidence: E-02, E-04, E-11; B

R-02|Reflexive terminology suffices to prove complete self-inclusion

  • Strongest counter-reading: The author admits that words are only signposts, so thought itself has been let go and the first condition is passed.

30 / 3613. Strongest Objections and Replies
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
  • Adjudicated reply: The reflexivity is real; the author also gives words the function of “pointing back to stillness”, but this does not constitute a complete built-in placement of all understanding, still less can it replace the deletion test of the second condition.

  • Supporting or disputed evidence: E-05, E-08, E-11; B/C

R-03|It is all aesthetic experience, so it should be placed in ⑤

  • Strongest counter-reading: The works revolve around peace, stillness and bodily feeling; the aim is experience.

  • Adjudicated reply: Experience is very important, but the author repeatedly defines it as the shift from identification to awareness, and inner recognition cannot be deleted.

  • Supporting or disputed evidence: E-01, E-07, E-12; B/C

31 / 3613. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.70|Eckhart Tolle13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)

R-04|It is only exhortation and does not constitute structural evidence

  • Strongest counter-reading: The officially published material largely asks readers to pause their reading, so it cannot be placed in ② on that basis.

  • Adjudicated reply: A single command is indeed not a structural definition; hence the author’s account of his experience, the explanation of identification and the mutual support of the self-commentaries of several books are used together.

  • Supporting or disputed evidence: E-01—E-05, E-07, E-11; B

R-05|The Now means denying time

  • Strongest counter-reading: There is only one present, so all history, society and change should be denied.

  • Adjudicated reply: The author continually discusses social patterns and action in A New Earth;

R-06|That consciousness precedes form already has a metaphysical proof

  • Strongest counter-reading: The author explains that pure consciousness precedes form, which suffices to prove it is the objective substratum of the universe.

14. Comparison with Neighbours

Compared with Ramana Maharshi (No.33), both question identification with the “I”, but self-enquiry cannot be directly equated with the language of presence; compared with Nisargadatta (No.34), the function of “I am” must be examined independently; compared with Krishnamurti (No.35), both attend to the relation between observation and identification with thought; each is compared on the basis of its own checked textual range.

15. Final Summary

Final six-position placement: ② Directly seeing the ground (B); ⑤ Experiencing the world as a competing direction (C); ① is a hypothesis awaiting verification (D)

Summary: Tolle takes “the Now / presence” and awareness disidentified from thinking as the core practice of liberation, and repeatedly distinguishes the ground of being that is already there from the transformation of consciousness that still has to happen. Recognizing or abiding in presence is not mere teaching ornament, so at present it is placed in ② (B).

Scope limits: what is mainly checked is the continuous introductions and author’s forewords published on the author’s website; not all the main texts of the works have been checked chapter by chapter;

② (B) rests on the multi-link argument of the introduction to the original book and on cross-work support, and universal completion is not inferred from isolated exhortations or individual healing cases.
