# Rūmī（Sufism）

## Common research question

**Why does Rumi use love and separation to discuss union?**

Rūmī's images of love, separation, longing, and meeting are poetic means of exploring the relation between the human and the divine. The “I,” “you,” wine, and other recurring figures cannot always be read literally, but neither should they be flattened into one abstract doctrine.
