Archival statement: the threefold poverty, the breakthrough and God’s work in Q52 have been checked against a German electronic text with edition notes; Q2 against the Middle High German with a modern German translation; the Advent sermon against the transcription of the Stanford medieval texts project.
The first front-page phrase is a modern German transcription / translation, not a verified Middle High German original, as stated; On Detachment is treated as T3 because its attribution is disputed.
One-line placement: ① Occurrence itself / ② Directly seeing the ground, boundary open (C/C); currently placed at ②. Q52’s withdrawal of knowledge, will and “a place for God to work” provides rare strong evidence for ①, but the inner realization of God’s birth in the soul and the expression of the breakthrough still give ② substantive competition.
Most distinctive point: he pushes even “wishing to do God’s will” and “knowing that God is working in oneself” into things that must be let go, while in a sermon on the inner Word he explains how thought and speech are born from the word in the mind.
Final load-bearing point: the non-objectified Godhead / divine work, the soul’s complete poverty and breakthrough, and God’s birth in the soul; the point of contention is whether the “breakthrough” must be completed as a non-deletable right recognition.
Most subtle point: Q52 on the one hand says plainly that blessedness does not lie in knowing and loving and cancels “knowing that God is at work”, and on the other repeatedly appeals to breakthrough, receiving and the grasping of this truth; one may not quote only one side.
This archive distinguishes “reliability of the text” from “strength of structural judgement”. T1—T4 indicate a text’s date, attribution, stability of transmission and representativeness; T1 = core, early and stable texts; T2 = reliable texts whose transmission or attribution is slightly weaker, and reliably confirmed self-commentary by the author; T3 = late material, or material whose attribution or edition is clearly doubtful; T4 = later commentary or reception history, which cannot replace the author’s direct evidence. The specific division is given in Chapter 3.
A = stated directly by the original; B = a strong structural inference supported by several original passages; C = grounded, but with an equally reasonable alternative reading; D = a counter-pressure test or a hypothesis awaiting verification. An A-level original only proves that the text says so, and does not automatically raise a complex interpretation to A.
Direction of evidence: “supporting” means supporting the present six-position judgement; “limiting” means a functional mediation or boundary still remains; “disputed” means the direction of the text is not unique; “neutral” means the text is there but does not for now form a core limit for the final deletion test. ① must prove at once that thought, its utterance and its understanding are positively placed within a more basic structure, and that the complete structure still holds once “right cognition of the ground” is deleted.
Core scope: the reliable German sermons Q52 (Quint numbering, DW II) and Q2 (DW I), with edition links; the Advent sermon (Paradisus anime intelligentis), whose context of transmission is clear; On Detachment is read only as a T3 limiting comparison because of the real dispute over its attribution.
T1 = sermons and the author’s own works reliably attributed within the critical-edition system (DW/LW); T2 = reliable material that is abridged in compilation or transmitted in later copies; T3 = texts whose authenticity is continually disputed;
T4 = church condemnations, later compilations and modern research, which serve only to show reception and transmission and are not treated as the author’s direct self-commentary.
The Middle High German excerpts of the Advent sermon can be checked, but they are transmitted in a later compiled collection with a risk of editorial rewriting, so they are set at T2. The text of Q52 seen at https://eckhart.de/p52.htm is Josef Quint’s modern German translation, and this modern sentence is not passed off as the original Middle High German words; On Detachment does not decide the main class.
Limits of semantic checking: the checkable text of Q52 is Quint’s modern German translation, and the original Middle High German construction of “nichts wissen” cannot be reconstructed from its direct quotation. The “not-knowing” of that passage refers to not possessing an awareness of God’s work; whether a function of realization from distinction to breakthrough is still kept must be decided by reading it together with the last part of Q52, not by presupposing a logical paradox. The T2 Advent sermon carries a risk of compilational rewriting and can serve for counter-evidence and comparison, but cannot be added on equal terms to the T1 sermon.
Core research question: has Q52 already positively placed knowing, speaking, self-knowledge and human activity within the divine work, with the ultimate structure still holding after “right recognition of the ground” is deleted; or does the “breakthrough / God’s birth in the soul” still bear a non-deletable relation of completion?
1. From outward poverty to the inner poverty of not willing, not knowing and not possessing (E-01—E-04).
2. Distinguishing the revocation of the created will from the work of God Himself as the place of action (E-05—E-07).
3. Approaching the non-objectified ground through the breakthrough and the difference between Godhead and God (E-08—E-09).
4. Examining the place of the inner Word and outward speech in the structure of birth (E-10—E-11).
5. Establishing the return between freedom and action in Q2; strictly limiting the layer of the disputed On Detachment and of later censure (E-12—E-14).
Evidence cards E-01—E-14. This chapter again distinguishes T1—T4 reliability of the text from A—D strength of judgement; a direct statement of the original can be A, while six-position inferences still need a separate B/C/D judgement. Directions are supporting, limiting, disputed and neutral; checking of the original language, checking of a translation and mere location of chapter content are each marked. The “cannot be inferred” of each card limits only the conclusions that the evidence at that place permits.
Verified short phrase in German translation (not verbatim Middle High German): ein armer Mensch, der nichts will und nichts weiß und nichts hat
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): True poverty is not a lack of material things, but having, at the fundamental level, no will, knowledge or possession of one’s own.
Structural role here: Supports the candidate of non-cognitive completion for ①: the text directly places “knowing” too among the things to be withdrawn. (Structural judgement grade: B; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: Not-knowing cannot be equated directly with factual ignorance, nor can the context of breakthrough in the text as a whole be ignored.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): Even the most pious self-intention “I wish to fulfil God’s will” is still not enough to reach the poverty defined by the sermon.
Structural role here: Supports ①: it removes the mediation “I reach God through some right will”. (Structural judgement grade: B; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: It cannot be inferred from the negation of the created will that all ethical action is cancelled.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The account of the second poverty requires that one not even be aware that God is working in oneself, and does not define poverty by a second-order self-monitoring of “I know that I do not know”; this points to withdrawing the cognitive possession of the divine work.
Structural role here: Supports a local deletion for ①: in Q52’s definition of poverty, the cognitive ownership “I know that God works in me” is not a necessary condition; but “this particular knowledge can be deleted” cannot be generalized into “any right relation of realization can be deleted”. (Structural judgement grade: B; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: This passage alone cannot prove that the whole theology no longer needs any relation of realization / receiving.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The sermon points the place of blessedness to a deeper “something” from which the powers of knowing and loving flow, and says that whoever knows this “something” will understand where blessedness lies; thus it both denies that the power of knowledge itself is the root of blessedness and does not clear the function of knowing that root from all expression.
Structural role here: Disputed: that the deeper root is not constituted by the powers of knowing and loving themselves supports the ① direction; “knowing this root and understanding blessedness” leaves a clear positive candidate for ②’s function of insight. The two coexist in the same passage of Q52, and one should not take only the first half. (Structural judgement grade: C; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: The deeper “something” cannot be immediately reified as an independent organ of the soul, nor can “knowing it, one knows where blessedness lies” be equated directly with everyone having to keep a continuous objectified knowledge.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): Even “the soul preparing a place for God to work” is broken through; it is God Himself who becomes the place of His own work, and the human being receives within it.
Structural role here: Supports the positive structure of ①: no further position of a receiver standing outside God’s work is set up. (Structural judgement grade: B; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: The description of the human being here as passive still forms an interpretive tension with “how passivity is completed”.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): Taking Paul as an example, the sermon explains that grace effectively completes a work of transformation, after which its achievement remains rather than letting the person occupy the appearance of that function for long.
Structural role here: Disputed: cognition need not abide after completion, but whether “completion” is non-deletable needs to be tested separately. (Structural judgement grade: C; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: It cannot be asserted from a staged completion that the functions occurring on the path can all be deleted.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): From created differentiation and the relation of God’s names, there is a breakthrough to a more original unity, and “I and God are one” is narrated.
Structural role here: Limits a pure ① conclusion: the text writes the “breakthrough” as an important form of completion reaching this non-dual relation. (Structural judgement grade: C;
this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: “I and God are one” does not mean that the empirical individual unconditionally becomes God as an independent entity.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): In describing the eternal nature, Q52 says that “knowing this is not necessary”, yet the sermon also asks the hearers to understand these words. The former denies knowing as a condition for the divine relation to hold;
the latter, in the same sermon, repeatedly asks the audience to understand and prays that they may truly live and experience this relation. Exhortations to the audience cannot alone serve as structural proof, but they indicate that the sermon does not simply cancel grasping and realization.
Structural role here: Supports ① and shows its boundary: knowledge is denied as necessary, yet the questions of understanding the discourse and of actual realization remain. (Structural judgement grade: C; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: One cannot take only “there is no need to know” and ignore the whole sermon’s argument about the state of poverty and breakthrough.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): There is a shift of level between “God” as a name related to creatures and the Godhead / undifferentiated ground.
Structural role here: Supports the background of ③-type metaphysical questioning, and gives a possibility for ①’s non-objectified ground. (Structural judgement grade: C; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: This cannot simply be described as two gods or two separate entities, nor can its ontology be presupposed to equal only later interpretations.
Verified short phrase in the original: daz Got geborin werde in der sele
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The text defines the aim of actions such as fasting, baptism and birth as God being born in the soul and the soul being born in God.
Structural role here: As a T2 auxiliary limit: the transmitted sermon clearly takes divine birth in the soul as its goal; but the risk of slight alteration in the medieval compilation limits its independent force to overturn T1 Q52, and “birth” itself is not directly equated with cognitive completion. (Structural judgement grade: C; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: The inner birth cannot be translated directly into a single acquisition of propositional knowledge.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The sermon first explains that a word is received by the intellect, takes form in thought and issues from the mouth, and then compares this to the eternal Word issuing within the soul; this is an explicit analogy between “the stages of human speech—the divine Word”, not an unconditional removal of the difference between the two levels.
Structural role here: Supports a local positive candidate for ①’s first condition, but is not enough to pass alone: outer and inner speech are indeed placed within the sermon’s structure of the birth of the Word, yet this is a local T2 analogy, from which it cannot be inferred that all raising, understanding and speaking of thought are fully accounted for by a more basic structure running through the whole system. (Structural judgement grade: C; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: An account of the generation of speech in one sermon does not yet mean that all thinking has been fully placed across the whole corpus.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): “Virginity” symbolizes a freedom not occupied by images; this freedom does not hinder what has been done, but becomes the condition for receiving the Word.
Structural role here: Limits reading “poverty” as the disappearance of action in the world; provides evidence of the structure of return. (Structural judgement grade: B; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: Not being bound by images does not mean having no understanding, speech or action.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): The later-transmitted treatise stresses that detachment is higher than ordinary self-attachment; it survives in many manuscripts, but reliable evidence of authorship is scarce and modern scholarship continues to dispute it.
Structural role here: Disputed: its content can serve as parallel structural material, but the authenticity of the text does not allow it to be raised to decisive evidence for the author. (Structural judgement grade: C; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: The dispute over authorship cannot be smoothed over because it was included in DW.
Gist of the original (this archive’s restatement, not a verbatim quotation): After the author’s death the church condemned a number of propositions drawn from his works, and later interpretation often revolves around disputes over the limits of the relation between creatures and God.
Structural role here: Neutral: it shows the risks of reception and problems of attribution and selection, and cannot decide ① / ② here. (Structural judgement grade: D; this grade concerns the interpretive use of this card and is not the same as the verification status of the original.)
What it does not prove: A document of condemnation is not the author’s own positive account of his complete system.
Armut / arm|Poverty: not mere material lack, but having no will of one’s own, no possession and no knowing.
Gelassenheit|Letting-be / releasement: withdrawing from one’s own willing and possessing.
Abgeschiedenheit|Detachment: whether it is used in reliably authored texts must be checked case by case.
Durchbrechen|Breakthrough: piercing through created distinction and the relations of God’s names to a more fundamental unity.
Gott / Gottheit|God / Godhead: to be read with distinction in contexts of relation, naming and non-distinction.
Gottesgeburt|The birth of God: the realization of the divine Word in the soul, not an ordinary physical event.
Wort|Word: there are layers of occurrence between inner understanding and spoken expression.
DW / LW|The German critical edition series of the German works / Latin works, not a unified popular collection of sayings.
Positive evidence: in inquiring into the root of blessedness, Q52 excludes one by one will, knowledge and even the “place” needed for God’s work; the ground appears as a divine work no longer founded by the operations of an independent human being (E-01—E-05).
Limiting evidence: another group of sermons treats God’s birth in the soul and the breakthrough as goal and realization (E-07, E-10), producing a substantive point of contention in the overall structure over whether cognitive completion can be deleted.
Disputed reading: ① stresses the non-objectified, the non-cognitive condition; ② stresses the non-deletable relation from separation to breakthrough and realization. The two have different textual support.
Most secure present conclusion: he cannot be placed in ① directly on the strength of one passage on “not-knowing”, nor judged ② because the word “knowing” appears; the two positions are open at C/C, and since the burden of proof for ① is heavier, he is currently placed at ②.
Already withdrawn / de-substantialized: self-will, conscious possession of God’s work, and the soul as a fixed workplace for God’s use are all revoked in Q52 (E-02—E-05).
Core structural load-bearing points: God’s own work, the soul’s poverty / passivity and the language of the realization of the “breakthrough”; the divine birth of the Advent sermon is a T2 supplement, not an independent core basis overriding Q52 (E-03—E-07, E-10).
Disputed functional load-bearing point: whether the passage from still standing on one’s own will and knowledge to poverty and breakthrough is a non-deletable step of cognitive recognition, or lets cognitive possession too be dissolved by a more fundamental divine work; Q52 says both that blessedness does not lie in the powers of knowing and loving themselves and that whoever knows the deeper root will understand where blessedness lies (E-03, E-04, E-07, E-08).
Nature of the load-bearing points: “not knowing that God works in me” is not another “knowing that I should not know” that must be reflectively mastered, but a refusal of self-certification of grace and divine work;
teaching this requires language and discernment, but it cannot be inferred automatically that completion also needs such second-order cognition.
Deletion test A—delete self-confirmation that God is at work: the second poverty of Q52 explicitly commands letting go of this confirmation; God’s own performing of the work and poverty are kept and do not break for lack of “I know”, so this particular cognitive possession can be deleted at the structural / final layer (E-03, E-04). But this is not a general proof of deleting all relations of cognitive completion.
Deletion test B—delete the structure of God working Himself: the third poverty of Q52 denies that the soul keeps a fixed place and affirms that God Himself is the place of His work; once only human passive non-action is kept, the positive ground of occurrence in the original “God Himself works” breaks at the structural layer (E-05).
Deletion test C—delete the breakthrough itself: the final part of Q52 advances from created distinction to the “breakthrough” and writes the unity of God and man; without the account from created distinction to breakthrough, the relation of attainment in Q52 changes at the structural layer (E-07). But whether the realization of the “breakthrough” requires right recognition is still C;
the same sermon both denies that the powers of knowing and loving are the root of blessedness and says that whoever knows the deeper root understands blessedness, so neither “there is change” nor “not-knowing” alone can decide it (E-04).
Deletion test D—delete God’s birth in the soul: at the opening of the T2 Advent sermon, questions such as “why pray, fast, be baptized” are answered by the birth of the divine Word, so the relation of purpose in that sermon breaks at the structural / final layer (E-10); yet this material does not limit T1 Q52 on equal terms, and it cannot be concluded from it that the whole system is completed through cognition.
Deletion test E—delete the inner understanding, formation and speaking of the word: paragraph 3 of the T2 sermon first says that the word is received in the intellect and takes form through thinking, and then treats speech as the manifestation of the inner word; deleting outward expression causes only a break at the expressive / teaching layer of this sermon, and the ground of divine birth is not thereby cancelled (E-11).
What still holds after deletion: no final independent knower is needed to guarantee that God is at work;
but whether the relation of realization of poverty and breakthrough, occurring for a creature, can also be wholly deleted cannot be decided directly from the word “not-knowing”.
Layer of break and place in the complete structure: the place of work and the breakthrough are structurally key; particular self-knowledge can be withdrawn; birth bears the final purpose in the T2 sermon, but its priority across texts and its cognitive nature are still C.
Mode of existence after completion and the return: in Q2, not clinging to images is combined with action, showing that poverty is not the cessation of life, and the practice of life cannot be reduced to a continuous static vision of God (E-12).
The place of thought itself: Q52’s negation of its highest formulations is reflexive; E-11 places speech within the layers of inner word—outer word, but the local T2 analogy is not enough to prove ①’s first condition for the whole of Q52.
Another reasonable reading: if the breakthrough is only God’s own occurrence, the competition from ① is valid; if it requires a non-deletable function of “rightly realizing this non-objectified relation”, ② holds. The most secure present conclusion is ① / ② at C/C; because ①’s two conditions have not yet been proved, he is currently placed at ②.
Reflexivity: Q52 withdraws even pious intention, knowledge of God’s work and the concept of “God” one holds; the sermon itself may not occupy a privilege by “I understand poverty” (E-02, E-03, E-09).
①, first condition—positive inclusion: God’s own work in T1 Q52 (E-05) gives cognitive activity a more basic direction in which self-possession can be withdrawn; the analogy in T2 E-11 of inner word—thought—spoken word and the eternal Word supplements the account of how speech occurs. But neither is yet a pervasive positive definition, within the complete structure, of the raising, uttering and understanding of thought itself; the first condition is grounded but not passed.
①, second condition—deletion test: in the sense of Q52’s poverty, deleting the ownership “I know that God is at work” has indeed passed (E-03); but Q52 still lays down the breakthrough, and birth in T2 is the core purpose of that sermon, so whether cognitive realization is needed is still C. Sufficient deletion of “all right cognition of the ground” required by the second condition is not yet proved; the affirmative statement about “knowing the deeper root” in E-04 and the breakthrough in E-07 of the same sermon must take part in the test.
On the objection of “knowing that one must not know”: teaching poverty requires reasoning, which does not prove that the one taught must keep, after completion, a knowledge monitoring their own not-knowing; conversely, denying monitoring cognition cannot alone prove that the right realization of the “breakthrough” is without mediation.
Most secure present conclusion: reflexivity is strong, and positive self-inclusion has local candidates but is not sufficiently proved. The ① / ② boundary is open (C/C), and by the higher threshold of proof he is currently placed at ②.
Positive evidence: Q52 speaks not only of “no substantial knower”, but also says that true poverty must not know that God works in oneself (E-03), which directly touches functional deletion rather than ordinary de-substantialization.
Limiting evidence: within the same T1 sermon, Q52 keeps the narrative of attainment from created difference to breakthrough (E-07); the T2 Advent sermon shows birth as its own purpose, but can only limit in an auxiliary way (E-10), and weaker evidence may not override Q52.
Disputed reading: it can be held that the breakthrough is not “someone rightly recognizing”, but divine occurrence itself; it can also be held that without the passage from not-realized to realized, the blessedness the text speaks of is not complete.
Most secure present conclusion: the most subtle point is the functional distinction between “not-knowing” and “knowing the deeper root / realization”, not merely whether a substantial subject seeing God remains. Keep C/C, and let no fragment win in advance.
①: Q52’s particular cognitive possession can clearly be deleted (E-03, E-04), and God working Himself provides a local positive ground (E-05); but the T2 analogy of the generation of speech in E-11 does not independently pass complete self-inclusion, and the cognitive nature of the breakthrough is not dissolved either, so ① is genuine C-level competition rather than already established.
②: the same T1 passage of Q52 writes the attainment of breakthrough and the oneness of God and man (E-07); whether it must be completed through “right recognition” is still C;
the affirmation in E-04 of “knowing the deeper root” also forms real competition, but cannot directly prove that it is a universally necessary condition of completion. The divine birth of T2 (E-10) is only auxiliary, and he is not automatically placed at ② because a dynamic change appears.
③ / ④: scholastic disputation, biblical exegesis and ethical teaching are real intellectual tasks, but they are not enough to cover what poverty and breakthrough lay down for the highest structure.
Final placement: ① Occurrence itself / ② Directly seeing the ground, boundary open (C/C); currently placed at ②
He pushed negation to “knowing God / willing God / reserving a place for God” itself, so that the divine ground cannot be replaced by human merit in practice, cognitive possession or abstract concepts; and through the inner Word he explained how thought and speech take part in the divine activity in the soul.
He brought about within the Western Christian tradition an extremely radical, non-possessive relation between God and man, but whether the complete structure of completion can wholly leave the cognitive relation must still be examined according to the texts.
Strongest counter-reading: Q52 says plainly that true poverty does not know that God works within, so the complete cognitive function can be deleted; the retort “one must know how not to know” is only a verbal trap.
Adjudicated reply: The strength of Q52’s deletion of a particular self-certifying cognition is accepted; setting up a further condition of completion “one must know that one does not know” is rejected. But whether Q52’s own breakthrough and the birth of T2 still keep some other cognitive realization remains C, and ①’s two conditions have not been proved together.
Strongest counter-reading: In the sermons, God’s birth in the soul and the breakthrough cannot be deleted, so in any case he belongs to ②.
Adjudicated reply: The breakthrough of Q52 does bear a structure of attainment, but it is not automatically the same as propositional knowledge; the T2 Advent sermon sets divine birth as the purpose of that sermon, and its lower level of evidence cannot replace proving within Q52 that cognition is non-deletable. The affirmative wording in the same sermon “knowing the deeper root, one knows blessedness” (E-04) must also be read alongside; yet whether this knowing is guidance of the sermon or a non-deletable function of the final state is still C.
Strongest counter-reading: Since the word passes from the intellect through thought to the mouth, and is compared to the eternal Word, thought itself has been positively accounted for, so ①’s first condition naturally holds.
Adjudicated reply: E-11 is a local T2 analogy of occurrence, not a global account of all thought, its own expression and understanding within the divine structure of Q52; its value should be kept, but the first condition cannot pass on this alone.
Strongest counter-reading: After the breakthrough there is no subject and object, and the individual can no longer be distinguished from God.
Adjudicated reply: Q52 discusses the breakthrough through the names of relation and the level of the Godhead; the oneness in discourse cannot be reduced to substantial identity of the empirical person.
Strongest counter-reading: This widely influential treatise can be used directly to fill any gap in the argument.
Adjudicated reply: The dispute over the attribution of On Detachment clearly exists, so it cannot serve as direct evidence of the original author with the same strength as T1 Q52.
Strongest counter-reading: The 1329 text was condemned, so no stronger non-dual reading within it can hold.
Adjudicated reply: Censorship is historical reception material, not a direct substitute for inference about philosophical structure; the specific propositions, the context of the sermons and the author’s defence must be restored.
Compared with Plotinus (No.42): both discuss the return from the many to the One, but Eckhart’s birth of the Word, grace and the structure of the sermon must keep their meanings within Christianity.
Compared with Augustine (No.57): Augustine’s relation of love, understanding and grace cannot, without testing, be equated with Q52’s radical withdrawal of knowing and desiring.
Compared with Ibn ʿArabī (No.56): the structures of the undifferentiated root and of manifestation may be neighbours, yet they should still be compared on the basis of each one’s present settled text and chain of evidence, without letting synonyms replace the testing of relations.
Summary: ① Occurrence itself / ② Directly seeing the ground, boundary open (C/C); currently placed at ②. Q52 pushes knowing, will and the place of God’s work to the boundary of deletability, and the Advent sermon positively discusses how speech is formed; but whether breakthrough and birth are still a final non-deletable relation of realization is a substantive, reasonable dispute between the texts.
Scope limits: Q52, Q2 and one sermon transmitted through later compilation have online evidence; the whole of the Latin works, all reliable German sermons and the variants of the various critical editions have not yet been read together in full. The complete self-inclusion and sufficiency of deletion needed for ① cannot be declared in advance on this basis.

Edition and scope of verification: the visible wording quoted from Q52 in E-01—E-09 follows Quint’s modern German translation; the attribution and manuscript evidence of Q52 rest separately on S7, without claiming that the Middle High German has been checked; the Advent sermon of S3 has a clear later Paradisus transmission and risk of abridgement (T2), and is used as local side-evidence, not with the same weight as the T1 evidence of Q52. The whole-system judgement from “not-knowing” to ① still has a C-level boundary.
