Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant1. Person Overview

1. Person Overview

Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason asks how knowledge is possible and where the limits against overreach lie; the practical philosophy establishes a different legitimacy through the moral law, autonomy and freedom; the Introduction to the Critique of the Power of Judgment further asks how nature and freedom are connected, and by what a priori principle reflective judgment handles the empirical diversity of nature. The common critical task of the three is to examine the faculties of reason and the boundaries of their legitimate use, so ③ (B) still has structural support across the three Critiques; ④’s ethical norms and natural teleology are equally real, but not enough to erase this common methodological task. The “I think” of B131 is a condition of the possibility of experience, not the self-inclusion of a primordial occurring; the consciousness of the law in practical reason does bear the load of moral action, but it is not an ultimate direct seeing of a supersensible ground.

Final question: do the three great Critiques share the fundamental task of “establishing each faculty of reason and the conditions of its legitimate use” (③)? Do moral practice and teleology make ④ take its place? Do the “I think” and the consciousness of the moral law really lay down a ② structure whose endpoint is seeing the ground?

03 / 531. Person Overview
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant1. Person Overview (cont.)

The highest judgment of this archive is not “who writes most mysteriously”, nor date or school; what is tested is the functional mediation that remains non-deletable in the complete ultimate structure, and the main philosophical task a body of thought really undertakes.

Most distinctive point: the three Critiques do not give the same conclusion of “direct seeing of the ground”, but ask separately how theoretical knowledge, practical reason and reflective judgment are each possible and on what they are legitimate. The connection of nature and freedom in the Introduction III, IV of the Critique of the Power of Judgment gives ③’s cross-domain mission of examination new support in the original texts, and gives ④’s natural teleology / ethical norms their due place (E-07, E-19—26).

Final load-bearing point (in brief): deleting a single right direct seeing of a supersensible noumenon does not damage Kant’s critical system; deleting the critical examination of the faculties of reason and their a priori grounds damages the common argument of the three Critiques at the structural layer. The consciousness of the moral law does bear load in the practical structure, but is not the same as a ②-type ultimate realization of the ground. Hence ③ (B), ④ an important C-grade competitor, ① D (see chapter 8).

04 / 531. Person Overview (cont.)
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant1. Person Overview (cont.)

Most delicate point (in brief): the most delicate point is whether B131, “the I think must be able to accompany all representations”, and AA 5:30, “the fact of reason”, belong to the formal and normative conditions of the cognitive and practical faculties, or already constitute a ②-type event of completion in which the highest ground is rightly recognized. The original texts support the former level, and do not support the latter inference. The Introduction III, IV of the Critique of the Power of Judgment further reveal the communication of nature and freedom and the a priori principle of reflective judgment, thus widening the basis of comparison of ③/④, without directly making ④ of equal weight (E-07, E-19—26).

2. Reading Note|Grades of Evidence and Judgment

T1—T4 are the source levels of textual evidence: T1 = the author’s reliable original works or the stable core texts of the object of study itself; T2 = disciples’ reports, compilations and media of transmission; T3 = texts with considerable disputes of attribution / dating; T4 = later interpretation, modern research. Marking a card T1 means “this text is a reliable work of the person studied”, not that the author’s manuscript or all variants of different printings have been checked.

05 / 531. Person Overview (cont.)
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant2. Reading Note|Grades of Evidence and Judgment (cont.)

A—D are strengths of interpretation: A = the text says it directly; B = a strong structural inference supported by several mutually supporting passages; C = a genuinely grounded competing boundary; D = an objector’s hypothesis or insufficient evidence. An A at the position of the original does not automatically raise the philosophical judgment inferred from it to A. The text uses no numerical scores or rankings.

The six positions are: ① The Occurring Itself; ② Direct Seeing of the Ground; ③ Inquiring into the Ground; ④ Explaining the World; ⑤ Experiencing the World; ⑥ Living in the World. ① must prove both that thought and speech are positively placed in a more primordial structure of occurring, and that deleting “right recognition of the ground” does not change the complete ultimate completion; ② requires that such right cognition cannot be deleted from the complete structure; ③ and ④ are distinguished by the main philosophical task, not by whether there is an answer, sudden or gradual, or length of text.

The levels of break in the deletion test are fixed as: expression layer / teaching layer / path layer / structural layer / final layer. Only when a thought itself makes a demand for ultimate completion is the “final layer” understood as an independent state after realization; for philosophers of fundamental argument especially, a narrative of liberation may not be forced on them.

Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant3. Textual Scope and Method

3. Textual Scope and Method

The A and B editions of the Critique of Pure Reason, the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, the Critique of Practical Reason and the Introduction III, IV of the Critique of the Power of Judgment (now additionally checked) are all T1; the detailed aesthetic / teleological analysis of the main body of the third Critique remains outside the limits, and no claim is made to have read all its chapters.

Note on source verification: this archive uses locatable electronic original texts; cards marked “short original phrase” are answerable only to the electronic transcription noted, and have not yet been compared one by one with authoritative critical editions; cards marked “Chinese gist / not verbatim” do not pass for the author’s original sentences. Context, variants and edition history still to be checked further follow the source notes in chapter 16.

The 1781 A edition and the 1787 B edition of the Critique of Pure Reason may not be merged without marking; they are located by A/B pagination, and the practical philosophy by AA volume and page; the additional check of the Critique of the Power of Judgment follows the author’s German text of Introduction III, IV, and an electronic text is not the same as word-for-word collation with an authoritative printing. Anschauung is intuition, and may not be confused with this project’s ② direct seeing of the ground.

07 / 533. Textual Scope and Method
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant4. Core Question and Structural Chain of Thought

4. Core Question and Structural Chain of Thought

How is human knowledge possible, and where does it stop? Has critique already positively placed philosophy’s own thinking activity into a more basic structure of occurring? Will practical freedom and the moral law make the whole system belong mainly to ④?

The critical aim of the A/B editions: the difficulties of reason require reflection on the conditions and boundaries of knowledge.

Space and time are forms of intuition; sensibility and understanding together produce empirical knowledge.

The synthesis of apperception and the deduction of the categories establish the conditions of unity of objects of experience (B131 etc.).

The boundary of phenomena—noumena and the antinomies limit the overreach of theoretical reason.

Freedom, the moral law and autonomy establish the independent function of practical reason.

The Introduction III, IV of the Critique of the Power of Judgment bring the connection between nature and freedom, and the independent a priori principle of reflective judgment, into the critical work;

this strengthens at once the evidence for ③’s common task and for ④’s explanation of nature.

This archive’s exclusionary cautions: transcendental apperception may not be mistaken for a substantial soul; the thing in itself may not be wrongly called non-existent; one cannot claim from freedom in practical reason that the free thing in itself has already been known theoretically.

5. Original-Text Evidence Base

Each evidence card distinguishes: location, short original phrase or edition hint, Chinese gist, function in the six-position judgment, and conclusions that explicitly cannot be inferred; short original phrases are answerable only to the electronic transcription noted in this archive, and no completed critical collation is claimed.

transzendentale Apperzeption (transcendental apperception): the synthetic unity by which representations can belong to the “I think”

Ding an sich (thing in itself): not to be taken simply as an object of experience

Autonomie (autonomy): the will giving law to itself, not caprice

7. The Place of the Ground

The strongest claims at the level of the ground that this archive permits must submit to the explicit texts of chapter 5: the critical aim of the A/B editions: the difficulties of reason require reflection on the conditions and boundaries of knowledge. Space and time are forms of intuition; sensibility and understanding together produce empirical knowledge.

Interpretations withdrawn or strongly limited: transcendental apperception may not be mistaken for a substantial soul; the thing in itself may not be wrongly called non-existent; one cannot claim from freedom in practical reason that the free thing in itself has already been known theoretically.

34 / 536. Glossary of Key Terms (cont.)
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant7. The Place of the Ground (cont.)

① cannot be directly inferred from “being does not depend on a finite knower”. That the ground is originally so, that thought is included, the account given to the deluded, and whether right cognition is deletable from the complete structure, each require separate proof.

Proposition Structure and Layers of Evidential Strength

Chain 1: the critical aim of the A/B editions: the difficulties of reason require reflection on the conditions and boundaries of knowledge. The additional check of the Introduction III/IV of the Critique of the Power of Judgment does not decide ④ by its content alone. Here it serves only as a reviewable structural clue; the distribution of evidence must be checked card by card back in chapter 5, avoiding filling in, from some famous saying, intermediate links the author has not explained.

Chain 2: space and time are forms of intuition; sensibility and understanding together produce empirical knowledge. Here it serves only as a reviewable structural clue; the distribution of evidence must be checked card by card back in chapter 5, avoiding filling in, from some famous saying, intermediate links the author has not explained.

Chain 3: the synthesis of apperception and the deduction of the categories establish the conditions of unity of objects of experience (B131 etc.).

Here it serves only as a reviewable structural clue; the distribution of evidence must be checked card by card back in chapter 5, avoiding filling in, from some famous saying, intermediate links the author has not explained.

Chain 4: the boundary of phenomena—noumena and the antinomies limit the overreach of theoretical reason. Here it serves only as a reviewable structural clue; the distribution of evidence must be checked card by card back in chapter 5, avoiding filling in, from some famous saying, intermediate links the author has not explained.

Chain 5: freedom, the moral law and autonomy establish the independent function of practical reason. Here it serves only as a reviewable structural clue; the distribution of evidence must be checked card by card back in chapter 5, avoiding filling in, from some famous saying, intermediate links the author has not explained.

Chain 6: the highest good, hope and teleology extend towards the ethical world, and cannot be simplified into the endpoint of a single theoretical cognition. Here it serves only as a reviewable structural clue; the distribution of evidence must be checked card by card back in chapter 5, avoiding filling in, from some famous saying, intermediate links the author has not explained.

36 / 537. The Place of the Ground (cont.)
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant7. The Place of the Ground (cont.)

Key distinction: the holding of fundamental being, the reader’s being able to explain the ground, actual completion in finite life, and the text itself giving such an explanation are four different functions; any one term must be judged layer by layer, and a word such as “knowledge / awareness / understanding / self” may not be stretched across the four layers.

8. Structural Endpoint and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test

Test A: remove only the function of “a single right direct recognition of the absolute noumenon”, keeping the sensible / intellectual conditions of empirical knowledge and the moral law; the Critique of Pure Reason actually refuses to make the supersensible an object of theoretical direct seeing, so no ②-type structural break occurs. Test B: remove the function of transcendental critique examining the legitimacy of knowledge, freedom and judgment: the argument for the synthesis of apperception and objectivity, the boundaries against the overreach of theoretical reason, the legitimacy of the moral law, and the examination of the connection of nature—freedom in the Introduction to the Critique of the Power of Judgment all lose their consistent ground as a critical system; the break is at the 【structural layer】, supporting ③ as main task.

37 / 537. The Place of the Ground (cont.)
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant8. Structural Endpoint and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test (cont.)

Test C: remove only the practical subject’s consciousness of the moral law; the fact of reason of AA 5:30 and the practical capacity of autonomy would be actually destroyed (the 【structural layer】 of moral practice), but this proves the reasonable load of normative action, not a direct realization of the noumenal ground; ② cannot be judged merely because “there is a non-deletable cognition”.

Test controls: keep the existence, nature, structure of objects and ethical goals explicitly laid down by the author; remove only one of the tested functions, “right cognition of the ground” or “the argumentative function of reasonable grounds”, without casually deleting virtue, action and social order along with it. Where necessary the two deletions are reported separately, so that a break in the process of proof is not passed off as a break in the final structure.

9. The Place of Thought Itself|Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion

B131’s “the I think must be able to accompany all representations” is the transcendental formal condition of the unity of apperception, giving an explicit internal location to thinking activity in experience, which as self-reflexivity and a condition constitutive of experience can be judged B;

38 / 538. Structural Endpoint and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test (cont.)
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant9. The Place of Thought Itself|Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion (cont.)

but it does not say that the argument and reception of the Critique of Pure Reason itself are part of some more primordial noumenal occurring, and the positive self-inclusion required by ① cannot be inferred automatically from a formal condition (first condition at most C). If this project further requires deleting “right cognition of the ground”, Kant precisely does not admit that theoretical reason can complete such a noumenal direct seeing, and one cannot therefore infer back that ① has passed the complete final deletion test (second condition unproven). Hence ① as a placement belongs to a D-grade stress test, not to an equal-weight competition with ②.

Cross-archive threshold of consistency: ①’s first condition is not passed because “the text discusses thought” or “the author acknowledges the limits of language”, but requires the text to have grounds for treating its own thinking, speaking and knowing as actual moments of a more fundamental structure of generation / being; the second condition must independently complete the full structural test of “right cognition is deletable”. One condition may be strong while the other fails.

Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant10. The Most Delicate Point for This Figure

10. The Most Delicate Point for This Figure

The most delicate point is whether B131, “the I think must be able to accompany all representations”, and AA 5:30, “the fact of reason”, belong to the formal and normative conditions of the cognitive and practical faculties, or already constitute a ②-type event of completion in which the highest ground is rightly recognized.

Competing Interpretations and Specific Limits

The positive evidence for ④ is by no means incidental: “the human being as an end”, the autonomy of the free will and the fact of reason directly lay down ethical norms; the critique of judgment also takes on natural teleology and aesthetic questions.

40 / 5310. The Most Delicate Point for This Figure
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant10. The Most Delicate Point for This Figure (cont.)

③ is still stronger: the critique of pure reason delimits the boundaries of theoretical knowledge, the critique of practical reason establishes the legitimacy of the law, and the Introduction III, IV of the third Critique study how nature and freedom are joined into one whole of critical philosophy and by what a priori principle reflective judgment operates. Their common overall task is to adjudicate the grounds and legitimate boundaries of each faculty of reason (B); ④, though a C-grade competitor in ethical—natural content, has no counter-evidence against the unified “critical” mission of the three Critiques. ②’s consciousness of the moral law is necessary to the practical structure, not a direct seeing that attains the free thing in itself.

Neighbouring interpretations must still use the same measure: the archive is judged only by the author’s own reliable works, and the mature concepts of another’s thought may not be poured back; nor can the old “①/②” question be imposed on authors who, at bottom, only treat the conditions of knowledge and the explanation of the world.

11. Six-Position Placement

Final placement: ③「Inquiring into the Ground」 (B);

41 / 5310. The Most Delicate Point for This Figure (cont.)
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant11. Six-Position Placement (cont.)

④「Explaining the World / regulating ethics」 is an important C-grade competitor, not an equal-rank boundary of main position. The common work across the Critique of Pure Reason, the Critique of Practical Reason and the Introduction to the Critique of the Power of Judgment is investigating the a priori conditions, validity and legitimate boundaries of each faculty, not some particular ethical norm or account of the empirical world. With the third Critique added, ④’s direction of empirical nature and teleology receives real evidence, and ③’s cross-domain task is also directly confirmed. ②’s moral consciousness, though bearing load in practical life, is not enough to constitute an ultimate direct seeing of the ground; ① is a D-grade placement stress test.

Load of judgment: ruling by the architecture of the three Critiques: theoretical understanding, practical reason and reflective judgment are each asked about their a priori principles and legitimate boundaries. The connection of nature / freedom in Introduction III of the Critique of the Power of Judgment, and the distinction of determining and reflective judgment in IV, are not appendices; they place both the empirical diversity of the laws of nature and the real efficacy of moral freedom under critical examination. ④ is the real content of normative ethics and natural teleology, and does not exclude ③ as the main task organizing these discussions.

42 / 5311. Six-Position Placement (cont.)
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant11. Six-Position Placement (cont.)

Content status: the philosophical content of this archive has been ruled on, and all grounded C-grade boundaries are part of the formal conclusion; except for newly discovered important textual facts, errors of attribution of the original, or obvious errors of argument, it is not changed because of general divergences of interpretation.

Main Task and Boundary Control

Ruling by the architecture of the three Critiques: theoretical understanding, practical reason and reflective judgment are each asked about their a priori principles and legitimate boundaries.

③ may not be excluded because “ethical passages appear”, nor ④ because “fundamental concepts appear”; ethical practice is a legitimate object of ④. The difference between ② of the occurring / realization type and ③ whose main work is critique and argument requires first proving whether a non-deletable function of ultimate cognitive completion has really been laid down.

Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant12. Highest Achievement

12. Highest Achievement

Highest achievement: systematically determining the sensible and intellectual conditions of the possibility of empirical knowledge and the legitimate boundaries of theoretical reason, establishing the practical law of freedom and autonomy, and seeking through reflective judgment a critical connection between nature and freedom. The three Critiques together establish “by what right one so knows, so acts, so judges” as the fundamental mission of philosophy. This achievement cannot be shrunk to the “I think” as a metaphysical direct seeing, nor does it mean that the whole text of the Critique of the Power of Judgment has been systematically examined (E-01—26).

13. Strongest Objections and Replies

R-01|The “I think” is positively placed as the foundation of all experience of objects, so it should be ①?

  • Question and strongest grounds: B131—132, A158/B197.

44 / 5312. Highest Achievement
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
  • Adjudicated reply: The “I think” of B131 is the transcendental condition by which various representations can belong to one consciousness, indeed a strong self-reflexivity regarding the constitution of experience; but it does not prove that the speech of the Critique of Pure Reason itself has been taken into a primordial occurring, nor is there an independent provision that the function of ultimate cognitive completion is deletable; ① as a whole is only D.

  • Judgment grade: The objection and the grounds of the ruling on this card are layered according to the argument of the main text; the grounded C-grade dispute is kept, and documentary T1 is not automatically equated with a philosophical judgment of A.

R-02|Rightly identifying the transcendental subject is ②’s realization of the ground?

45 / 5313. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
  • Adjudicated reply: Rightly grasping the formal necessity of the “I think” is not a theoretical direct seeing of the self in itself. Critique limits knowledge of things in themselves as objects, so it lacks the definition of completion by direct seeing of the ground that ② requires.

  • Judgment grade: The objection and the grounds of the ruling on this card are layered according to the argument of the main text; the grounded C-grade dispute is kept, and documentary T1 is not automatically equated with a philosophical judgment of A.

  • Question and strongest grounds: AA 4:421, 429, 440; AA 5:30.

  • Adjudicated reply: ④’s ethical grounds seriously hold;

  • but the Critique of Pure Reason examines the validity of knowledge, the Critique of Practical Reason examines practical reason and freedom, and the Introduction to the Critique of the Power of Judgment examines the connection of nature and freedom and the principle of judgment, together laying down the legitimate use of reason; ③’s cross-domain main mission is stronger.

  • Judgment grade: The objection and the grounds of the ruling on this card are layered according to the argument of the main text; the grounded C-grade dispute is kept, and documentary T1 is not automatically equated with a philosophical judgment of A.

47 / 5313. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
  • Adjudicated reply: “The thing in itself cannot be known theoretically” is a philosophical treatment of the possible questioning of the unconditioned, the boundaries of argument and the validity of knowledge, not abandonment of the fundamental question. ③ does not require obtaining a supersensible intuitive answer about the thing in itself.

  • Judgment grade: The objection and the grounds of the ruling on this card are layered according to the argument of the main text; the grounded C-grade dispute is kept, and documentary T1 is not automatically equated with a philosophical judgment of A.

R-05|Is the “I think” of the B edition the same as the theory of the subject in the A edition?

  • Question and strongest grounds: The transcendental deduction of A / §16 of B.

  • Adjudicated reply: The formal difference between the A and B deductions is respected; the group of quotations B131, B136 belongs to the B edition, and cannot be treated as the same wording in A.

48 / 5313. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)

  • The difference does not prove an intuition of the self as substance.

  • Judgment grade: The objection and the grounds of the ruling on this card are layered according to the argument of the main text; the grounded C-grade dispute is kept, and documentary T1 is not automatically equated with a philosophical judgment of A.

R-06|The fact of reason of the moral law proves a direct recognition of freedom, so ②?

  • Question and strongest grounds: Critique of Practical Reason AA 5:30; Groundwork AA 4:446.

  • Adjudicated reply: The fact of reason in AA 5:30 proves that the consciousness of the moral law bears load in practical norms and in the justification of freedom (the practical structural layer), but it is not a theoretical direct seeing of the noumenon of freedom or an independent final cognitive realization; ② is excluded not because “② must be mystical experience”, but by the criterion of the complete task and the difference of function.

14. Neighbour Comparison

With Leibniz, compare rationalist demonstration and transcendental legitimacy; with Plato (No.40), compare the relation of the good and knowledge; with Zhu Xi (No.29), compare where knowing, acting and normative goals stand in the structure of completion. These comparisons do not mean that similar terms are synonymous across the systems.

15. Final Summary

Final conclusion: Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason asks how knowledge is possible and where the limits against overreach lie; the practical philosophy establishes a different legitimacy through the moral law, autonomy and freedom;

50 / 5313. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.46|Immanuel Kant15. Final Summary (cont.)

the Introduction to the Critique of the Power of Judgment further asks how nature and freedom are connected, and by what a priori principle reflective judgment handles the empirical diversity of nature.

Limits of documentation: item-by-item comparison of the electronic original texts with critical editions has not been fully completed; systematic coverage of works outside the core is still limited.

Boundaries of Evidence and Coordinates for Further Verification

Verification coordinate 01|Is the apperception of B131 only a formal condition, and not ②’s “right recognition”?

Verification coordinate 02|Is there a difference between the A/B editions of the Critique of Pure Reason in the function of the “I think” and objectivity that could change the placement?

Verification coordinate 03|Will the freedom and fact of reason of the Critique of Practical Reason turn ③’s main task towards ④?

Verification coordinate 04|Can “transcendental philosophy determining its own possibility” satisfy ①’s first condition while the second still fails?

Verification coordinate 05|The Critique of the Power of Judgment has been checked only for Introduction III/IV, not covering its aesthetic and teleological main body: does this affect the sufficiency of the evidence for the overall classification?
