Sources of the core marks: φυγὴ μόνου πρὸς μόνον (Enneads VI.9.11; Greek ending checked); The One is not an Intellectual-Principle (VI.9.3, MacKenna’s English translation); our teaching is of the road and the travelling (VI.9.4, MacKenna’s English translation). The marks serve only for orientation and cannot replace the evidence cards; anything marked as awaiting collation is not to be treated as a finally collated original text.
1. Person Overview
One-line placement: the One transcends being, knowledge and the distinction of knower and known; the return of the soul forms its endpoint in a presence / union beyond knowledge.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus1. Person Overview (cont.)
Strictly deleting “right cognition of the One” and deleting “union itself” give different results, and whether cognition is a non-deletable function of union still admits two reasonable readings. By the v1.3 burden-of-proof rule for ①, it is provisionally placed at ② (C; the ①/② boundary open).
Most distinctive point: the One does not become itself by recognizing itself, yet the union of the soul with the One still has a distinction between not yet attained and attained; “presence/παρουσία” cannot be directly equated with a cognitive function merely because an old English translation uses “vision”, nor can non-duality alone prove that every function of completion is deletable.
Point of entry: if every being that has shape, number or consciousness belongs to the many, how does the many come from a “One” that belongs to no thing? Why does the soul fall into separation, and how does it return to its source through virtue, intellect and final union?
Archive note: this archive organizes its judgments on the basis of the original texts and traceable translations; the C-grade boundaries kept are reasonable disputes with textual grounds, and do not mean that the author’s original text is defective.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus2. Reading Note|Grades of Evidence and Judgment
2. Reading Note|Grades of Evidence and Judgment
This archive distinguishes “textual reliability” from “strength of structural judgment”. T1–T4 refer to the date, authorial attribution, stability of transmission and representativeness of the text itself; A–D refer to the strength of a judgment drawn from the text: A = stated directly in the original; B = a strong structural inference supported by several passages; C = grounded, but with an equally reasonable alternative reading; D = an objector’s stress test / a hypothesis awaiting verification. An A-grade original only proves that “the text really says this”, and does not automatically raise its interpretation to A.
Direction marks: support = supports the current six-position judgment; limit = shows a point of functional load or a structural boundary; disputed = the text does not point one way; neutral = the text exists but does not for now constitute a core limit in the deletion test. Quotation and paraphrase are always distinguished: most E cards in this archive use “location of the proposition in the original / Chinese paraphrase”, not a verbatim transcription of the original within quotation marks.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus3. Textual Scope and Method
3. Textual Scope and Method
Range of original texts: the texts are treatises written by Plotinus, edited by his pupil Porphyry into six Enneads (the Enneads); the editorial order is not the order of writing. To avoid inferring development from the arrangement, this archive cites by treatise and chapter with cross-references; the English parallel reading relies mainly on Stephen MacKenna/B. S. Page, and the key passage VI.9.11 was additionally checked in the Greek and Armstrong’s English translation. English renderings are translations and do not claim to be the Greek; cards not checked word for word against the Greek are marked as awaiting collation. Porphyry’s Life of Plotinus can serve as T4 editorial information, not as automatic original text of the thought.
T1—T4 for this figure: T1: Plotinus’ core treatises in the Enneads; the transmitted Greek is in principle T1, with local variant readings noted separately. T2: cards whose key terms are hard to verify semantically in present translations keep a C interpretation in the judgment field, without thereby automatically lowering the T of the author’s original. T3: isolated variants awaiting collation. T4: Porphyry’s biography and later Neoplatonic interpretation.
Boundary of evidence: edition pagination follows each author’s traditional standard references (Aristotle Bekker; Plotinus treatise—chapter; Descartes AT volume and page);
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus3. Textual Scope and Method (cont.)
only original wording that has been checked exactly is called an “original sentence”. Modern secondary literature is used to correct the history of interpretation or textual scholarship, and is not poured back into the author’s position.
4. Core Question and Structural Chain of Thought
If every being that has shape, number or consciousness belongs to the many, how does the many come from a “One” that belongs to no thing? Why does the soul fall into separation, and how does it return to its source through virtue, intellect and final union?
1. All things are what they are through their unity; the highest “One” is not the first member among many beings (VI.9.1–3).
2. From the One comes Intellect (Nous), which at the same time contains the intelligible objects; Soul is constituted through Intellect and organizes the sensible cosmos (V.1, V.2).
3. The One is above being, concept, knowledge and the distinction of knower and known; negative speech prevents it from being objectified (VI.9.3–6).
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus4. Core Question and Structural Chain of Thought (cont.)
4. The soul is not wholly cut off from its root, and through virtue, purification, turning inward and ascent to Intellect gradually lets go of the many (I.2, I.6, VI.9).
5. The experience of union exceeds reasoning and ordinary knowledge; there, there is no division into seer and seen (VI.9.10–11).
6. But the philosophical account of the source, the path and the world of differences still takes place as the soul’s speech and intellectual activity; “ineffable” cannot be taken to mean structureless.
5. Original-Text Evidence Base
To repeat: T1—T4 measure textual reliability, A—D measure the strength of inference; A refers only to what the passage corresponding to the card clearly expresses, and does not make all structural inferences A. Support / limit / disputed / neutral each state the relation to the current six-position judgment. Most “excerpts” are given as Chinese semantic locations, and may not pass for word-for-word transcriptions of the Greek, French or Latin originals; the collation status is noted card by card.

E-01|VI.9.1
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|support|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: Only by having unity does something become one thing; divided to the point of losing its oneness, the original thing no longer holds.
Structural role of this evidence: It shows that “the one” is not an object some person recognizes, but the condition under which every being can be some one being.
What it does not prove: The unity of things and the One beyond being cannot simply be identified.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
E-02|VI.9.2
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|support|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: Intellect and true being are still a multiplicity, and cannot be the absolutely first.
Structural role of this evidence: It establishes that the ground transcends Intellect: denying the reading “the highest is self-knowledge”.
What it does not prove: It cannot be directly inferred from “above knowing” that the human completion of union can dispense with the function of experience / presence.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-03|VI.9.3
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Proposition / phrase in the original: The One is not quality, quantity, intellect or soul, neither in motion nor at rest.
Structural role of this evidence: The ground is not objectified, and does not hold only through the activity of some independent knower.
What it does not prove: Negative language also has a structure of reference; it cannot be treated as nothing because it is hard to name.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-04|VI.9.3
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|disputed|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: Calling the One a “cause” mainly refers to what we receive from it, not to assigning it a changing property.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Structural role of this evidence: The text places statements about the One themselves on the derived side; a solid candidate for linguistic self-reflexivity and local self-inclusion.
What it does not prove: “My speech belongs to the derived side” must still be read together with the soul—intellect structure; a single sentence is not enough to prove ①.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-05|VI.9.4
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|limit|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: Reaching the One is not ordinary knowledge or the cognition of an intelligible object, but a presence beyond knowledge.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Structural role of this evidence: It poses the strongest limit to ②: “knowing” is not an ordinary cognitive relation.
What it does not prove: “Beyond knowledge” cannot be swapped for “the function of arriving in experience can be wholly deleted”.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-06|VI.9.4
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|disputed|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: Writing and speaking only point out the road; seeing at first hand cannot be replaced by written guidance.
Structural role of this evidence: It distinguishes the language of teaching, the path and completion: discourse can be deleted while “presence / seeing” may not be deletable.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
What it does not prove: “Seeing” may be merely metaphorical, and must be checked against the non-dual union of VI.9.10–11.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-07|VI.9.5
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|limit|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: The One cannot truly be named; even using “one”, one must guard against being misled by the numeral.
Structural role of this evidence: It shows the self-reflexive capacity for de-substantializing concepts; even the highest name has no absolute exemption.
What it does not prove: It does not mean that there is henceforth no need to explain how the world comes from the One.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
E-08|VI.9.6
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|disputed|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: The One does not know itself; having no self-knowledge does not mean ignorance, since there is no external object in it.
Structural role of this evidence: It directly excludes the reading “the One must rightly know itself in order to hold”, and provides explicit textual evidence for ①’s ground not waiting on knowing; but it has no separate deciding force on whether the soul must undergo a non-deletable recognition.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
What it does not prove: That the One has no self-knowledge ≠ that the soul’s right cognition of the One can already be deleted from the complete structure of return; conversely, that the One is beyond knowing may not be forced into meaning that the soul must “see” in order to have union.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-09|VI.9.7
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|support|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: The depths of the soul itself are not wholly cut off from the One; return is not moving to a distant place in space.
Structural role of this evidence: It shows that the ground is always there and exists without waiting on cognition; it also provides, for self-inclusion, the relation of the world to its source.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
What it does not prove: Original presence is not enough to prove that the attained state needs no turning at all.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-10|VI.9.8
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|disputed|A (semantics) / C (functional classification)
Proposition / phrase in the original: The soul is always before the One, but does not always turn towards it; once it turns, the goal is reached.
Structural role of this evidence: The link between “turning towards” and completion is the core candidate for ②’s load, not an ordinary technique in time.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
What it does not prove: Whether “turning towards” is a cognitive transformation or the restoration of a relation of existential identity is kept at C.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-11|VI.9.9
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|support|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: The One is not diminished by the coming forth of derived things; derivation is like light that does not deplete its source.
Structural role of this evidence: It provides a non-competitive causal structure for the world’s return, and a discussable basis for speech being taken into the whole.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
What it does not prove: The light metaphor is an explanatory tool, and need not be understood as a substance of physical light rays.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-12|VI.9.10
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|disputed|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: Contemplation or reasoning is not true union; in union, two separate things are not retained.
Structural role of this evidence: In attained union, ordinary knowledge, the objectification of intellect and the split of subject and object are limited; this directly supports the ① direction that “union is not necessarily a cognitive act”, rather than merely excluding a substantial knower.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
What it does not prove: Although non-dual union excludes static seeing, whether it retains the function of “right recognition” necessary for reaching union must be read together with VI.9.4, 8 and 11, and cannot be cut down to the static description at completion.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-13|VI.9.11
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|disputed|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: There, there are no longer two, seer and seen; intellect and even self-activity withdraw.
Structural role of this evidence: That completion keeps no two terms of seer and seen constitutes strong limiting material for ①;
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
but the cancellation of objectifying cognition must be distinguished from the functional deletion of right recognition throughout the whole process of return.
What it does not prove: One cannot assert, merely because there is no seer in the final passage, that the whole process of completion has no cognitive condition at all; nor can one infer back from “there is return” that return must be cognitive completion.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-14|VI.9.11
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|neutral|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: “φυγὴ μόνου πρὸς μόνον”, conventionally rendered “the flight of the alone to the alone”.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Structural role of this evidence: A traceable core original-text mark: it gathers up the overall direction of the soul’s return.
What it does not prove: Apart from the whole chapter, “alone” cannot be read as two substances, subject and object.
Verification status: The Greek checked against a Greek–English parallel text of VI.9.11; the Chinese is the archive’s own translation.
E-15|V.1.6–7
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|support|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: Intellect is a secondary principle facing the One, and Soul in turn is the expression and activity of Intellect.
Structural role of this evidence: It provides positive resources for the place of cognition, thinking and speech in a more basic structure.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
What it does not prove: It cannot be directly inferred that all logical speech is fully accounted for at the level of the One.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-16|V.3.13/V.3.17
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|limit|A (direction of the passage) / C (inference to the endpoint)
Proposition / phrase in the original: The One exceeds “what can be said”, withdrawing from the multiplicity of Intellect to absolute simplicity.
Structural role of this evidence: It strengthens the reading “the ground cannot be objectified”.
What it does not prove: The punctuation of V.3.17 in different English translations must be checked against the Greek edition; do not decide the six positions by an isolated sentence.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
E-17|V.5.6–7
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|support|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: Intelligible objects are not apart from Intellect, but the Good / the One is above the range of the objects of Intellect.
Structural role of this evidence: It strictly distinguishes the self-inclusion of Intellect (knower and object in one domain) from the higher, objectless One.
What it does not prove: One cannot say from this that “the highest without knowing” means “completion without union”.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location;
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
E-18|I.2.3–7
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|neutral|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: Virtue and purification lead the soul towards Intellect; the higher state is not the same as simply carrying out the civic virtues.
Structural role of this evidence: It gives ethics and inner ascent a graded relation; VI.9 cannot be read only as isolated mystical language.
What it does not prove: Purification may belong to the path, or may be the preparation for completion, and must be tested separately from the endpoint.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
E-19|I.6.7–9
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|support|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: Ascending from bodily beauty and the beauty of soul to a higher source; beholding requires oneself to become alike.
Structural role of this evidence: “Seeing” requires a corresponding transformation, not merely a doctrinal statement; with VI.9 it mutually confirms its irreplaceability.
What it does not prove: The visual imagery here does not require a substantial observer to persist.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
E-20|IV.8.8
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|disputed|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: The soul does not descend wholly into the body; its upper part keeps a connection with the intelligible world.
Structural role of this evidence: It provides an account, not wholly detached from the higher realm, of how thought occurs, discussion takes place and return to the world is possible.
What it does not prove: The history of interpretation of the soul’s “not wholly descending” is complex, and a single passage does not settle all questions of individual identity.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
E-21|II.9.13–18
Text level / direction / judgment grade: T1|neutral|A (text) / B (structure)
Proposition / phrase in the original: It criticizes the position that wholly disparages the sensible cosmos as a bad creation.
Structural role of this evidence: It shows the return: the value of the world of differences is explained by levels, rather than holding that the world should be deleted entirely.
What it does not prove: It cannot be used to prove that all social and ethical demands are fully retained in the experience of union.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
E-22|VI.8.11–13
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Proposition / phrase in the original: The One both exceeds the ordinary predicates of freedom or will and is the root of all things.
Structural role of this evidence: Freedom of will and causality cannot be directly attributed to “the One” on the conditions of an ordinary subject.
What it does not prove: Using negative language does not mean that its relation of derivation has received a unique, undisputed proof.
Verification status: Checked by work and chapter location; the Chinese is a paraphrase of the content of the original, not a verbatim quotation within quotation marks.
6. Glossary of Key Terms
τὸ ἕν/the One: the highest principle, not as one among many beings; not the same as a greatest thing.
νοῦς/Intellect: the activity in which true being and the intelligible Forms share one domain; it still contains difference.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus6. Glossary of Key Terms (cont.)
ψυχή/Soul: the intermediate principle that organizes the sensible cosmos and can return up to Intellect.
ἐπιστροφή/return: turning back towards the source, not movement in space.
ἕνωσις/union: non-dual final presence / oneness; whether it can be equated with a cognitive function is the key dispute.
παρουσία/presence: being present while exceeding conceptual knowledge; it cannot be mechanically translated as the “knowing” of an ordinary object.
ἀποφατικός/negative speech: a reminder of the limits of assertion about the highest object; not simply the same as having nothing to say.
λόγος/speech / rational form: the expressible relation of a higher principle within a lower level; its meaning varies with context.
7. The Place of the Ground
Positive evidence: VI.9.1–3 place the One before being and Intellect; V.1 establishes the hierarchy of derivation One—Intellect—Soul.
Limiting evidence: the One does not know itself, nor is it the object of “cognitive completion” in the ordinary sense.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus7. The Place of the Ground (cont.)
Disputed reading: the ground exceeds knowing, which seems to support ①; but the presence / union in the soul’s return cannot be judged functionless merely because it is “beyond knowledge”.
Present safe conclusion: the One itself does not wait on cognition and transcends Intellect (A, direction of the text); whether the soul’s complete return still requires “right cognition of the One” reaches only C. The arguments for ① and ② must compete on the relation of completion, not on a contest of non-dual vocabulary.
8. Structural Endpoint and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test
Already withdrawn / de-substantialized: general predicates of being, objectified intellect, a nameable first substance, a fixed duality of knower and known.
Core structural load-bearing points: the One as the source of the world, the asymmetric order of derivation One—Intellect—Soul, and the final relation of the soul tending from separation towards presence / union.
Disputed functional load-bearing points: right cognition of the One, non-cognitive presence and existential union must be named separately;
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus8. Structural Endpoint and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test (cont.)
what is clearly non-deletable is the final relation of union, and whether “right recognition” must additionally be retained is still C.
Single object of deletion: delete only the function “right cognition / right recognition of the One”; keep the One, the order of derivation, and non-cognitive presence and union as candidates for an independent relation. Separately, as a control, test deleting “union itself”; the two may not be merged into one test.
What still holds after deletion: the One and the hierarchical world still exist; if the presence beyond knowledge of VI.9.4 is a purely non-cognitive union, the soul’s return could also hold without independent cognition (① direction, C).
What breaks after deletion: the ② reading understands the soul’s turning towards, becoming fit and “seeing” as the right recognition that makes return really attained, and deleting it breaks the chain of completion of its return at the structural layer; the ① reading holds that deleting right cognition does not damage existential presence / union. When “union” is separately deleted, the endpoint of return breaks on both readings.
Levels of break (fixed five-layer terminology): deleting right cognition of the One — structural layer on the ② reading, no corresponding break on the ① reading, judged C; independently deleting union — final layer (B).
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus8. Structural Endpoint and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test (cont.)
The latter may not be used in place of the former to decide ①/②.
Status within the complete ultimate structure: whether presence / union is attained is not mere teaching language; yet “non-deletable union” does not logically equal “non-deletable right cognition”. The provisional ground for ② lies in the functional descriptions of the soul’s response / seeing in VI.9.4 and VI.9.8, which still need reading against the original wording.
Mode of being after completion: it denies an independent relation of seer and object, and ordinary conceptual knowledge; whether there is a non-objectifiable awareness is C at the level of text and translation; it may not be substantialized.
The place of thought itself (self-reflexivity / self-inclusion): VI.9.3—4 assign the speech of the One as “cause” and the pointing of the way in writing to the side of what is derived, which, together with V.1’s positive hierarchical account of Intellect and Soul, provides B-grade material on “the place of cognitive activity in general”; but ①’s first condition, that concrete writing / reading are fully taken into the final structure, remains C and has not fully passed.
Return: II.9 does not cancel the value of the world; VI.9.11’s account of returning from union to virtue and the intelligible realm shows the levels of the return.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus8. Structural Endpoint and Final Load-Bearing Point|Strict Deletion Test (cont.)
Another reasonable reading: ① holds that right cognition of the One is deletable, that the endpoint is a non-cognitive union, and that derived thought has a positive place; ② holds that a non-deletable right “seeing / turning” must occur in the soul’s return. Neither side may let “union is non-deletable” automatically substitute for a proof about cognition.
Present safest boundary / grade: ② (C; the ①/② boundary open). Under v1.3, ①’s positive inclusion and the deletion of cognition have not both been established, so ② is provisional; this does not mean that ② has been strongly proven.
9. The Place of Thought Itself|Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion
Positive evidence: V.1 positively describes the hierarchy of derivation of Intellect—Soul; VI.9.3—4 assign statements about the One and the text’s pointing of the way to the activity of what is derived. The structural place of cognitive activity in general can be inferred to B, but the stronger conclusion that “this book’s proposing, speaking and understanding are all fully self-included” is only C.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus9. The Place of Thought Itself|Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion (cont.)
Limiting evidence: VI.9.4 acknowledges that writing and speaking can only point out the road, and cannot replace the presence beyond knowing; the finitude of language belongs to self-reflexivity, and cannot alone be taken as proof of self-inclusion.
Disputed reading: the positive order of derivation may explain how human thinking and expression belong to the whole; but to assign all of it concretely to a more basic structure and pass the cognition-deletion test, there is still an equally reasonable counter-reading at the functional level.
Present safe conclusion: self-reflexivity is B, the general inclusion of cognition is a B-grade structural candidate, complete self-inclusion meeting ①’s first condition is only C; ①’s second condition (deletion of cognition) is also C, and “local self-inclusion at B” cannot substitute for both conditions holding together.
10. The Most Delicate Point for This Figure
Positive evidence: VI.9.4 explicitly limits ordinary knowledge by a presence beyond knowledge, and distinguishes teaching from completion by the text’s pointing of the way versus attaining it oneself; VI.9.8 and 11 describe turning, union and return.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus10. The Most Delicate Point for This Figure (cont.)
Limiting evidence: the non-duality of VI.9.10—11 means that the “seeing” in completion cannot be directly understood as a subject knowing an object; conversely, the non-dual wording may not be taken as wholly deleting all right awareness.
Disputed reading: if presence / union is a non-cognitive existential relation, right cognition is deletable (①); if the appropriate turning towards / insight into the One is a non-deletable link needed to reach union fully, right cognition bears load (②). The text supports both readings, and the ruling reaches C.
Present safe conclusion: by ①’s higher burden of proof, provisionally listed at ② (C; the ①/② boundary open); the key point of dispute is the cognitive function, not whether the event of union occurs.
11. Six-Position Placement
Current main class: ②|Direct Seeing of the Ground (C; the ①/② boundary open)
Chain of argument: the One itself is beyond knowing (E-08), and union is not everyday objective knowledge (E-05, E-12, E-13); neither directly means that right cognition has been deleted;
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus11. Six-Position Placement (cont.)
VI.9.4 and 8 still use the language of completion, “turning towards / seeing”, but whether these are only figures for non-cognitive presence is undecided. The evidence for ①’s two conditions cannot reach B, so by method ② (C) is provisionally adopted, while keeping ① as an equally reasonable competitor.
No numerical scoring: the six positions are not a ranking of reputation, influence, scale of system or personal worth; only the final structure and the main task of thought are discussed here.
12. Highest Achievement
Distinguishing the One, Intellect and Soul with unprecedented force, both offering a non-depleting account of the source of the world of differences and making the highest completion impossible to be appropriated by conceptual knowledge, a substantial observer or ordinary language.

13. Strongest Objections and Replies
R-01|The One does not know itself and union is non-dual, so it should be ①.
Grounds of the objection: VI.9.6, 10–11.
Present reply: Cognition and ontological union are two different objects of deletion. Non-duality and the One’s lack of self-knowledge strengthen ①; but to establish ① it must still be proven that right cognition is deletable throughout the whole completion of return, and that thinking / speech are fully included; both are at present C.
Grade: D (stress test) / the parts acknowledged as grounded are treated as C.
R-02|Union is an existential fact, not cognition; judging ② directly is unfair.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Present reply: It is accepted as substantive C-grade counter-evidence. The presence of VI.9.4 surpasses knowledge, and may not be swapped for cognition; the provisional ② does not rest on “union is non-deletable” itself, but on the undecided function of completion of “appropriate turning / seeing” and on the burden-of-proof threshold for ①.
Grade: D (stress test) / the parts acknowledged as grounded are treated as C.
R-03|All the “seeing” appears only in exhortation and guidance, and bears no load.
Grounds of the objection: The language of the path in I.6 and VI.9.
Present reply: Exhortation alone does not count as structural evidence; it is the cross-chapter relation of VI.9.4 on presence beyond knowing, VI.9.8 on attaining by turning, and VI.9.10—11 on union that constitutes the complete structure of completion to be ruled on.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
R-04|The account of generation One—Intellect—Soul already fully places his writing, so it should be ① without dispute.
Grounds of the objection: V.1 and VI.9.3.
Present reply: V.1 and VI.9.3 do contain positive material making thinking and speech belong to the derived side; but general inclusion and complete self-inclusion must be separated, and ①’s second condition, the deletion test, cannot be replaced by the first.
Grade: D (stress test) / the parts acknowledged as grounded are treated as C.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
R-05|Union abandons the world and cannot return to ethics and language.
Grounds of the objection: The return in VI.9.11, the cosmology of II.9, the virtues of I.2.
Present reply: The world of differences still has order and value; but the concrete mechanism of return needs a more detailed reading of the original texts.
Grade: D (stress test) / the parts acknowledged as grounded are treated as C.
R-06|The One transcends being and thought, so all speech about the One fails; Plotinus’ work is only negative argumentative inquiry, so it should be ③.
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Present reply: VI.9.3—5 does limit every objectifying naming (E-03, E-07), and argument about the One is an important part of the work; but VI.9.4 defines the arrival as a presence beyond knowledge, and VI.9.8 describes completion as “turning toward is attaining” (E-05, E-10); the completing relation of the whole work lies in the soul’s return and union, not in argument itself. Negative speech is a limit on and path toward completion; ③ does not form a main task of equal rank, and the ①/② boundary stays open as originally judged.
Grade: D (stress test) / the parts acknowledged as grounded are treated as C.
14. Neighbour Comparison
With No.41 Aristotle (a comparative hypothesis awaiting verification): both speak of intellect and the highest principle, but Plotinus makes the highest One exceed intellect and takes the soul’s return as the endpoint; Aristotle lays more stress on the theory of causes. With No.36 Aṣṭāvakra: currently placed at ② (C, ①/② open);
Thought Archive No.42|Plotinus14. Neighbour Comparison (cont.)
both show a boundary between “the withdrawal of cognition” and “the relation of completion”, but the textual contexts differ and they do not directly confirm each other.
15. Final Summary
First, what is dismantled: general predicates of being, objectified intellect, a nameable first substance, a fixed duality of knower and known.
Second, what remains at the end: the One above being / Intellect; the order of derivation One—Intellect—Soul; the final structure of return from separation to union.
Third, where thought itself is: self-reflexivity is grounded, and the derived place of cognition in general has B-grade support; whether fully taking this text’s speech / understanding into a more basic structure meets ①’s first condition is still C.
Fourth, the most delicate point and the degree of certainty: that “union” is non-deletable does not mean that “right cognition” is non-deletable; ② is the provisional judgment (C; the ①/② boundary open), and the two reasonable readings are kept at C under the present original texts and translations.
Present conclusion: ②|Direct Seeing of the Ground (C;

the ①/② boundary open). ② is provisional under v1.3’s two-condition burden of proof; the reasonable competition of ① remains open.

Scope of collation and disputes: the MacKenna/Page translation of Enneads VI.9.4, 6, 8, 10—11 has been read in parallel, establishing that “presence beyond knowledge” and “writing only points out the road” are not the same as ordinary objective cognition; the Greek ending of VI.9.11 was checked separately. Full word-for-word collation against the Henry–Schwyzer Greek edition and Armstrong’s translation has not been completed, so “whether union contains right cognition” stops strictly at C, without claiming that any Greek word has only one translation.

Limits of editions: this archive takes verifiable locations in the original texts and explicitly named translations as its evidential basis; the word-for-word collation of variant texts not yet completed and divergences of interpretation honestly limit the strength of its judgments, and unchecked content is not used to prove that the author did or did not answer.
