# Parmenides（Presocratic philosophy）

## Common research question

**Why does Parmenides deny thinking what-is-not?**

Parmenides' poem contrasts the path of “is” with attempts to think or speak of “is not.” Treating nonbeing as an object of thought creates a fundamental difficulty. This is not a theory of modern physical vacuum, and the poem also contains an account of mortal opinion rather than only one abstract slogan.

## Interpretive boundary

The poem survives in citations; distinguish surviving verses from modern reconstruction.
