“I am” as the starting point

The distinction of levels: “person — witness — supreme”

Even the witness dissolves into the supreme reality

1. Person Overview

The English-translated dialogues of I Am That keep resetting the relations among “I am”, the witness, awareness and the supreme reality; they explicitly affirm the practical transformation of rightly recognizing false identity and tracing the source of consciousness, and they also withdraw any witnessing state that must be maintained or any experience that can be obtained. Cognitive change cannot be deleted merely because “reality is already there”, nor can the single practice of “holding on to I am” be directly turned into a non-deletable sole path. All key material is T2; ② is provisionally placed at C, with ① a strong competitor at C.

Final placement|②「Direct Seeing of the Ground」 (C), with ① a strong competitor at C; all evidence T2

Final question|Among the original presence of the ground, de-substantialization and the actual function of completion, which mediations are truly non-deletable? Positions are not assigned by “degree of mysticism”, nor on the strength of a single word for knowing or awareness.

2. Reading Note|Grades of Evidence and Judgment

T grades measure only documentary reliability: T1 = the core primary text of the object of study / text written by the person; T2 = disciples’ records, translations and editions, or texts with substantial transmissional mediation; T3 = later texts, or texts whose provenance / attribution is seriously disputed; T4 = later interpretation, hagiography, derivative schools. The specific layering is given in Sections 3 and 16.

A = a textual fact directly supported by the original; B = a strong structural inference across passages or across primary texts; C = a competing interpretation where both sides have reasonable primary-text support; D = an opposing test / evidence yet to be obtained. “The excerpt is verifiable as A” may not be passed off as “the philosophical inference is A”.

03 / 491. Person Overview (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj2. Reading Note|Grades of Evidence and Judgment (cont.)

E-card directions are only of three kinds: support, limit, disputed; modern dialogues are given as [Chinese summary of an English-translated dialogue] or [Chinese gist of the author’s original work], not as unchecked verbatim quotation.

3. Textual Scope and Method

Limits of the study|This archive uses T2 throughout: I Am That, produced through multilingual oral dialogue, translation and re-editing, is by no means a verbatim Marathi autograph. The translator’s preface mentions checking against a Marathi version, but at present no original-language material allowing word-for-word comparison has been obtained. The T2 limitation applies equally to the material on ②’s cognitive completion and to the material on ①’s original presence / the witness being included; no higher or lower documentary threshold may be set for ① on account of a classificatory leaning.

This archive never treats the English edited dialogues of I Am That as Nisargadatta’s unmediated verbatim words: the original conversations were mainly in Marathi, often mixed with on-the-spot translation; the recordings were translated into English by Maurice Frydman and then revised and selected by Sudhakar S. Dikshit; the titles and divisions of the 101 dialogues belong to the editorial layer.

04 / 492. Reading Note|Grades of Evidence and Judgment (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj3. Textual Scope and Method (cont.)

The translator himself says that word-for-word fidelity was not easy and that repetitions were cut; although he says there is a Marathi version confirmed by the speaker himself, this archive has not obtained that version for passage-by-passage comparison, so the whole core discourse is T2 (with a clear layer of transmission). The Chinese renderings are all marked as “gist of the English translated and edited content” and are not passed off as the speaker’s own words.

Note on supplementary evidence|Dialogues 62, 68 and 87 of the English translation serve as the evidence of E-22—E-24: E-22 covers the witness being positively built in and the function of “awareness of awareness”; E-23 demands tracing the source of consciousness; E-24 explains that “I am” is only a temporary scaffold. Dialogue 100 corresponds to E-20—E-21; the numbering of each card follows only the sources listed in this archive.

Principles of this archive: sūtra and commentary are not confused; what the person wrote and what disciples recorded are not confused; English translations and the original words of recordings are not confused. All titles, sūtra numbers, verse numbers and dialogue numbers can be traced back through the links in Section 16.

Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj4. Core Question and Structural Chain of Thought

4. Core Question and Structural Chain of Thought

• Dialogue 25: attention to “I am” is the starting point; after completion there is no longer any memory-object to hold on to.

• Dialogue 79: the mind reflects reality like a mirror; understanding is necessary for realization; from the person one passes into the witness, and finally the witness too dissolves.

• Dialogue 85: “I am” is the basis of all experience, yet not the highest source beyond experience; words can serve as a bridge, while reality transcends all objects of experience.

• Dialogue 100: rejecting mechanical suggestion, stressing sincere investigation and actual understanding, not taking verbal affirmations for awakening.

• Four-level distinction: contents of experience — “I am” consciousness — the function of witnessing — the supreme beyond the witness; placement requires checking whether the cognitive function can be deleted from the complete structure.

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary of the English-translated dialogue] The teacher asks one to hold on to the simple sense “I am”, dropping all other identifications, and to make this the actual practice.

  • Structural role: There is an explicit entrance of right attention / awareness; but it should not be assumed a priori that it is the final ground.

E-02|Dialogue 25 (on memory and the natural state)

  • T level / direction: T2|disputed|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] In realization there is nothing to hold on to or to forget; remembering and forgetting both belong to the mind, while the natural state goes beyond both.

  • Structural role: The strongest ① direction: the “holding on” that was once necessary does not become an objectified act at the end.

  • What it does not prove: “Not continuing to hold on after completion” is not the same as the function of awareness during the process being deletable.

E-03|Dialogue 25 (on true love and unity)

  • T level / direction: T2|disputed|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] Seeing oneself in all beings and all beings in oneself is a unity and love beyond ordinary desire.

  • Structural role: It gives a positive place to society, others and one’s relation to oneself, weakening the reading that takes it as private inner experience.

E-04|Dialogue 25 (naming and perceiving)

  • T level / direction: T2|limit|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] Naming is limited by thought; perceiving and naming are not the same, and awareness cannot be wholly encompassed by language.

  • Structural role: It distinguishes conceptual construction from the function of awareness, presenting a self-reflexivity of speech.

  • What it does not prove: It only criticizes the limits of naming, and cannot automatically satisfy ①’s condition of positive self-inclusion.

E-05|Dialogue 79 (mirror and clarity)

  • T level / direction: T2|support|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] What the seeker of reality seeks is already in himself; a clear, undistorting mind, like a mirror, can reflect reality.

  • Structural role: It brings out by contrast that reality is originally present, yet clear cognition still has a reflecting function that cannot be ignored.

  • What it does not prove: The mirror image is the mind’s reflection;

  • “reality itself” is not to be equated with the image in the mirror.

E-06|Dialogue 79 (the teacher’s words and non-contrivance)

  • T level / direction: T2|disputed|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] The speaker mentions that he attended to “I am” only at the beginning, and that the later transformation was not a deliberately constructed act.

  • Structural role: It counters “every liberation must involve a continuous operation of a subject”.

  • What it does not prove: An autobiographical recollection cannot become the sole definitive interpretation of the conditions of the whole teaching.

E-07|Dialogue 79 (action, awareness and non-doing)

  • T level / direction: T2|disputed|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] The actions of body and mind run by themselves; being aware of them is not the same as having an independent master of action.

  • Structural role: It brings thought’s own teaching and everyday action into a relation of non-contrivance; it gives local clues for ①’s self-inclusion.

  • What it does not prove: “There is no doer” does not automatically mean that the function of awareness as right cognition can be deleted.

E-08|Dialogue 79 (the witness is only a point in awareness)

  • T level / direction: T2|disputed|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] The witness, like a nameless and formless point of light, is only a reflection of a wider awareness, not the final supreme reality.

  • Structural role: It counters the reading that fixes the witness itself as an ultimate entity.

  • What it does not prove: One cannot conclude from this that pure awareness too is only a temporary psychological activity.

E-09|Dialogue 79 (the conditions of action and understanding)

  • T level / direction: T2|support|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] For realization, understanding is explicitly said to be necessary, while action is called only incidental; true knowledge must be tested in life.

  • Structural role: The strongest dialogue evidence for ②: it directly stipulates that the function of understanding cannot be absent.

  • What it does not prove: Whether “understanding” is conceptual explanation, discernment of the not-self or direct realization of the source must be judged from context; ② cannot be decided by one word.

E-10|Dialogue 79 (the witness dissolves into the supreme)

  • T level / direction: T2|disputed|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] Withdrawing from action into awareness, one keeps pure witnessing; even the activity of witnessing finally dissolves into the supreme reality.

  • Structural role: This is the core counter-evidence in the ① direction: even the functional form of the witness is finally withdrawn.

  • What it does not prove: Withdrawing the form of the witness does not automatically mean that the turn from action to awareness was never needed.

E-11|Dialogue 79 (person — witness — supreme)

  • T level / direction: T2|disputed|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] The person comes from identification, the witness is coloured by “I am”, and the supreme no longer has these qualifications.

  • Structural role: It provides a distinction of different layers of completion, forbidding “I am”, “the witness” and “the absolute” to be taken as three synonymous names.

  • What it does not prove: Nor can the three words be simply taken as three eternally existing objects.

E-12|Dialogue 79 (the self-retraction of conduct and teaching)

  • T level / direction: T2|disputed|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] Talking is described as an exchange of symbols between bodies and minds; from the final undifferentiated perspective there is no independent event.

  • Structural role: Thought’s own speaking is explicitly placed back into the whole, a stronger candidate for self-inclusion beyond self-reflexivity.

  • What it does not prove: “Symbolic sounds are not ultimately real” does not positively state that the reader’s awakening needs no right understanding.

E-13|Dialogue 85 (“I am” as the basis of experience)

  • T level / direction: T2|support|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] “I am” is the basis on which experience appears, but what the speaker wants to point out is the state before “I am” arises.

  • Structural role: Key distinction: the precondition of experience is not the same as ultimate reality; the ① / ② tests cannot be conflated.

  • What it does not prove: “Before I am” cannot be understood as some memorable date before biological birth.

E-14|Dialogue 85 (words, exploration and going beyond words)

  • T level / direction: T2|support|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] Words can serve as a bridge; seriously exploring what the words point to, one finally turns toward the reality that words cannot encompass.

  • Structural role: It gives teaching, language and enquiry a positive instrumental status; the ② candidacy is kept.

  • What it does not prove: Words being effective does not mean that words themselves are the supreme reality.

20 / 495. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] Toward the unknowable there is only silence; examining the knowable carefully, the conceptual level collapses and the unknowable reality remains.

  • Structural role: The truly most delicate point: right enquiry finally leads to “a known that no longer becomes an object”.

  • What it does not prove: The negation of the unknowable as an object does not mean there is no need throughout to discern conceptual errors.

  • Locator URL: https://www.nisargadatta-maharaj.com/2016/12/85-i-am-foundation-of-all-experience.html

E-16|Dialogue 85 (reflected awareness and pure awareness)

21 / 495. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] There is a distinction between the reflected awareness that witnesses within consciousness and the pure awareness beyond consciousness; only the latter is the essence of reality.

  • Structural role: It explicitly distinguishes the ontological character of pure awareness from concrete acts of witnessing; both ①’s self-inclusion and ②’s necessary function have textual support.

  • What it does not prove: “Pure awareness transcends consciousness” does not mean that “consciousness / awareness” is always one fixed term throughout the book.

  • Locator URL: https://www.nisargadatta-maharaj.com/2016/12/85-i-am-foundation-of-all-experience.html

E-17|Dialogue 85 (knowing reality is being reality)

22 / 495. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] Reality is not a new experience that can be obtained; the way of knowing reality is expressed as “becoming real / existing as the real”.

  • Structural role: It forms a structural analogy, to be checked, directly with Ramana’s Upadēśa Undiyār “being oneself is knowing oneself”.

  • What it does not prove: It only shows the non-objective experience of the end; whether deleting the right function of returning to the source is permitted still depends on dialogues 79 and 100.

  • Locator URL: https://www.nisargadatta-maharaj.com/2016/12/85-i-am-foundation-of-all-experience.html

23 / 495. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] The teacher’s speech is described as symbolic sound occurring in the body-mind structure, not constituting a new event in reality.

  • Structural role: It places the speaker’s own speech in the same structure of occurrence / non-occurrence, a strong candidate for ①’s first condition.

  • What it does not prove: Denying the independent reality of speech does not necessarily affirm its complete self-inclusion as an occurrence of the ground.

  • Locator URL: https://www.nisargadatta-maharaj.com/2016/12/85-i-am-foundation-of-all-experience.html

Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Original / checked gist: [Summary] The teacher advises observing the motives of one’s life, so that awareness keeps turning toward the source until it seems to become the source.

  • Structural role: An explicit function of “awareness turning back to the source”, a candidate relation in the ② direction that cannot be deleted.

  • What it does not prove: The image “seems to become the source” cannot be mechanically written as a subject creating the origin.

  • Locator URL: https://www.nisargadatta-maharaj.com/2016/12/85-i-am-foundation-of-all-experience.html

Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • merely reciting affirmations may instead become a new bondage.

  • Structural role: It stresses that knowing must be an actual function of dissolving the illusion of self, not memorizing a set of answers.

  • What it does not prove: The criticism of mechanical practice does not deny every practicable self-enquiry.

  • Locator URL: https://www.nisargadatta-maharaj.com/2016/12/100-understanding-leads-to-freedom.html

E-21|Dialogue 100 (observation does not necessarily newly produce liberation)

  • T level / direction: T2|disputed|textual location A; cross-passage interpretation B

26 / 495. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj5. Original-Text Evidence Base (cont.)
  • Structural role: It distinguishes the immediate effect of right understanding from the continued change of experiential results, avoiding conflation of social behaviour with ultimate judgment.

  • What it does not prove: This passage does not prove that, in ignorance, one can equally declare that “the function of completion” has fully held.

  • the same dialogue takes awareness being aware as the key to truly entering attention, and then says that the supreme reality goes even beyond awareness. The three layers coexist within the English passage.

  • Structural role: The activity of witnessing is positively placed in a more basic layer, a prominent candidate for ①’s first condition; the use of awareness is also positive evidence for ②.

  • What it does not prove: One cannot declare, merely because the witness is included, that this book’s own translation and its being understood are fully self-included, still less declare that the cognitive function can be deleted.

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary of the English-translated dialogue] Be aware that one is in consciousness, and enquire into the source of consciousness; the teacher also stresses that verbal explanation cannot replace actual practice, and that the form of the means is not the only point.

  • Structural role: It distinguishes two different functions: “repeatedly holding a certain phrase” and “actually withdrawing false identity and seeking what one depends on”.

  • What it does not prove: That one can practise in different ways does not automatically imply that the function of complete right recognition can also be deleted; but this passage does not designate any one method as the only one in the book.

E-24|I Am That, dialogue 87, “Keep the Mind Silent and You Shall Discover”

  • T level / direction: T2|limit / completion counter-evidence in the ① direction|English dialogue verifiable A; classification C

  • Original / checked gist: [Summary of the English-translated dialogue] The questioner compares the temporary “I am” and “what am I” to scaffolding; the dialogue also stresses the limits of consciousness and awareness within experience. One cannot excerpt only “the I am will go” and ignore the discussion of awareness.

  • Structural role: It reminds that “I am” may be an entrance for a stage, and the completed state does not require continually holding the same thought; it constitutes a limit on directly raising the path into a function of the end.

  • What it does not prove: That a temporary scaffold can be removed does not mean that every function of discerning the truth was never necessary in complete completion.

Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj6. Glossary of Key Terms

6. Glossary of Key Terms

I am|the direct sense of being, mainly an entrance for practice, not automatically equal to the supreme

consciousness|experiential consciousness, which may arise and cease and has experiential contents

awareness|awareness, pure awareness; the rendering needs checking against context in different dialogues

witness|the witness: a reflection of or bridge to pure awareness; not to be constantly equated with the final

Supreme/Absolute|the supreme reality beyond the relations of person and witness

realisation/understanding|realization, understanding; not the same as remembering propositional answers

Nisarga Yoga|the “natural yoga” as summarized by the translator; the appendix may not bear load independently as the speaker’s own words

7. The Place of the Ground

Positive evidence and limits|The ground is described as a reality that does not change with body, mind, experience and objects (E-13, E-15—E-17), prior to “I am” and the witness.

31 / 496. Glossary of Key Terms
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj7. The Place of the Ground (cont.)

This structure can bring speaking, thoughts and the interaction of teacher and student into one and the same description of occurrence (E-07, E-12, E-18); but the translated and edited language does not necessarily present a strictly fixed terminological system for “consciousness / awareness / pure awareness” throughout the book.

Necessary distinctions|The ontological stipulation of pure awareness / the seer ≠ the function of right discernment in the process of liberation; the withdrawal of empirical cognition ≠ the cancellation of real being.

8. Structural Endpoint and Final Load-Bearing Point

Deletion experiment|Delete only the function of right cognition “discerning false identity / tracing back the source of consciousness”, without at the same time deleting existence, freedom, the will to practise or the ordinary report of “I am”. (a) Ground layer: reality does not hold by virtue of saying “I am”; the deletion passes. (b) Concrete path layer: deleting only the particular practice of “continually holding on to I am”, there still remain other formulations — the discernment of non-contrivance in dialogue 79 (E-06), awareness of awareness itself in dialogue 62 (E-22), tracing back the source in dialogue 68 (E-23) — so it cannot be proved that a single path is absolutely necessary in the whole book;

it may not be automatically upgraded to ②. (c) The complete cognitive transformation: if even “seeing through false identification” and “consciousness returning to its source” are deleted, the turn “from false identity to freedom” presented in dialogues 62, 68 and 100 loses its stated pivot; but dialogues 25, 79, 85 and 87 also say that the final is originally present, non-experiential and needs no clinging, and whether the transformation can then be described as a purely pedagogical arrangement is reasonably disputed. ② provisionally C, ① a substantive strong competitor at C; the T2 limitation of translation and editing applies symmetrically to both.

Conclusion on levels|Separate four layers: the existence of the ground, the means of the path, the structural conditions for breaking ignorance, and the experiential forms that can be withdrawn after completion. Not retaining cognitive activity locally is not the same as the whole cognitive-function deletion test necessarily passing.

9. The Place of Thought Itself|Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion

Self-reflexivity and self-inclusion|Dialogue 62 positively places the activity of witnessing within the supreme, so “cognition being included in a more basic structure”, part of ①’s first condition, has clear T2 strong evidence;

33 / 498. Structural Endpoint and Final Load-Bearing Point (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj9. The Place of Thought Itself|Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion (cont.)

it does not merely say “language is insufficient”, but one still cannot assert, merely from the inclusion of the activity of witnessing, that these concrete dialogues, the translation and the reader’s understanding are positively accounted for in the same way. Complete self-inclusion is still C. The second condition must independently pass the final test with right cognition of the ground deleted, which is currently not confirmed; so ① is a substantive competing interpretation, not one declared to have passed.

Reminder of the two conditions|① must have both the positive built-in inclusion of thought’s own cognition / speech and the complete ultimate structure remaining unchanged once right cognition is deleted; proving the first does not replace the second.

10. The Most Delicate Point of This Figure

The most delicate point: dialogue 62, while affirming that “the witness appears in the supreme”, also says that the supreme reality transcends awareness; the same dialogue nevertheless writes attention to “awareness being aware” as the key by which reality enters attention. Dialogue 68 explicitly demands tracing back the source of consciousness, while conceding that verbal instruction is insufficient; dialogue 87 regards “I am” as a temporary scaffold;

34 / 499. The Place of Thought Itself|Self-Reflexivity and Self-Inclusion (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj10. The Most Delicate Point of This Figure (cont.)

dialogue 100 stresses the turn of understanding. These sentences, pulling against each other, reach us only through T2 English translation and editing, and the matter cannot be settled by any one English word.

Note on judgment|The T2 limitation is applied with equal weight to both ① and ②; the keywords of the English dialogues can only be checked back against context, and cannot be treated as verbatim quotations in the original language.

11. Six-Position Placement

Formal placement|②「Direct Seeing of the Ground」 (C), with ① a strong competitor at C; all evidence T2

Points of judgment|Deleting only “continually holding on to I am” cannot exclude other cognitive practices, so this one practice is a method of the path rather than a proven sole irreplaceable condition for the whole book; if all discerning of false identity / tracing back the source of consciousness is deleted, the explanation of liberation in dialogues 62, 68 and 100 loses its positive turn, but whether this is only teaching addressed to the unawakened still admits a reasonable alternative reading; that the witness is in the supreme has explicit T2 support for part of the condition of cognition’s positive built-in inclusion;

35 / 4910. The Most Delicate Point of This Figure (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj11. Six-Position Placement (cont.)

the complete built-in inclusion of this book’s own speech / the reader’s understanding, and the deletion of the cognitive function, have still not been confirmed.

Special limit|② holds only if there really is a non-deletable function of “rightly recognizing the ground” at the end; ① cannot be established directly by the word for pure awareness as ground, nor by ignorance having been withdrawn.

12. Highest Achievement

In concise dialogue he distinguishes identification with body and person, the ordinary state of witnessing, and the supreme non-objective reality, while setting “the necessity of right understanding” and “finally going beyond witnessing and words” in a productive tension.

36 / 4911. Six-Position Placement (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj13. Strongest Objections and Replies

13. Strongest Objections and Replies

R-01|Dialogue 79 says understanding is necessary, so directly ② (B)

  • Strongest counter-argument: In dialogue 79 of I Am That, “understanding” is explicitly said to be necessary for realization, while action is only incidental (E-09); this is already a direct statement that takes knowing as the condition of completion, and ② should be raised from C to B.

  • Adjudicated reply: E-09 does provide strong evidence for ②, and “understanding is necessary” may not be weakened into an ordinary piece of teaching advice. But whether the “understanding” here is conceptual understanding, the withdrawal of false identification, or a non-deletable right recognition of the supreme ground — the English-translated dialogues do not exclude every reasonable counter-reading; the same translated and edited text also keeps completion-layer material on the dissolving of the witness (E-10—E-11), on knowing being joined with becoming (E-17), and on “I am” as a temporary scaffold (E-24).

37 / 4913. Strongest Objections and Replies
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
  • ② has a substantive basis, but E-09 alone cannot remove the ① / ② dispute of the whole archive, nor can it bypass the limitation of translation and transmission that makes all the evidence T2; therefore ② (C) is maintained.

R-02|At the end even the witness dissolves, so the deletion test for ① obviously passes

  • Strongest counter-argument: Dialogue 79 says that the person and the activity of witnessing finally dissolve into the supreme (E-10—E-11); since at completion no cognitive subject or activity of witnessing is retained, the function of rightly cognizing the ground can already be deleted, and ① should hold directly.

  • Adjudicated reply: E-10—E-11 do deny that the witness is an eternal, unchanging final entity, and they also support ①’s strong counter-reading about the state of completion;

38 / 4913. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
  • but “no continuing activity of witnessing is retained after completion” is not the same as “the function of right discernment that leads to completion was never indispensable in the complete structure”. The requirement of understanding in dialogue 79 (E-09), the attention to awareness itself in dialogue 62 (E-22) and the tracing back to the source in dialogue 68 (E-23) still stipulate a role for actual discernment. ① must still prove separately that speech and cognition are positively incorporated into a more basic structure, and that the relation of completion remains complete once right cognition is deleted; in this archive the two have not both been proved. Therefore ① is kept as a strong competitor at C, and the deletion test is not declared passed.

R-03|“I am” is the final absolute, so ② without dispute

  • Strongest counter-argument: The teacher repeatedly asks one to hold on to “I am”, and “I am” is also the basis of all experience (E-01, E-13);

39 / 4913. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
  • so “I am” is the final absolute, and once it is recognized the classification can be ② without any dispute.

  • Adjudicated reply: That “I am” is an entrance for practice (E-01) and the basis on which experience appears (E-13) both have textual support, but “the basis of experience” is not the same as “the supreme reality”. Dialogue 79 distinguishes the person, the witness and the supreme (E-11), dialogue 85 distinguishes experiential consciousness, reflected awareness and pure awareness (E-16), and dialogue 87 further limits “I am” as a scaffold (E-24). Merging these levels directly would instead delete the textual tension this archive must explain. The candidate basis for ② lies in the function of right discernment or tracing back, not in fixing “I am” as an ultimate object; therefore the judgment can still only be ② (C).

40 / 4913. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)

R-04|The translated and edited text was approved by the author, and can be regarded as unedited T1 original words

  • Strongest counter-argument: Transmitted material says there was a Marathi version approved by the speaker himself; since the author approved the relevant teaching, the extant English I Am That should be regarded as his unedited verbatim words, and all E cards raised to T1.

  • Adjudicated reply: The author’s approval of a certain transmitted version and the proof that the English translated and edited text now in use preserves the Marathi conversations word for word are two different philological propositions. What this archive uses is an English text produced through oral conversation, English translation by the translator Maurice Frydman, editorial revision and arrangement by dialogue; no sentence-by-sentence collation of the original-language recordings with this English version has been obtained. Even if a Marathi version was once confirmed, this cannot erase the stages of English translation, selection and editing, still less allow the English wording to be treated as unmediated autograph words. Therefore the E cards remain T2;

41 / 4913. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
  • this limitation applies equally to the evidence supporting ② and the evidence supporting ①.

R-05|Whatever does not define the final by knowing should be placed at ①

  • Strongest counter-argument: Nisargadatta says that the supreme reality is prior to “I am”, and is not the same as continuous witnessing or objectified experience (E-13, E-16—E-17); since the final reality is not defined by cognitive activity, under v1.3 the classification should directly be ①.

  • Adjudicated reply: “The supreme reality is not defined by objectifying cognition” only shows that the ontological layer and certain post-completion activities need not be retained; it cannot directly replace ①’s two conditions: thought’s own cognition and speech must be positively incorporated into a more basic structure, and the complete ultimate relation must remain unchanged once the function of rightly recognizing the ground is deleted.

42 / 4913. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
  • Dialogue 79 links understanding with realization (E-09), dialogues 62 and 68 describe the transformation of awareness and tracing back (E-22—E-23), and dialogue 100 stresses actual understanding rather than mechanical slogans (E-20—E-21). Whether this evidence can be explained merely as teaching devices is still reasonably disputed, but it cannot be struck out at a stroke because the ground is originally so. Therefore ① is a strong competitor at C, not an established main position.

R-06|The dialogue is alive, so every proof of self-inclusion can be derived from the speaking itself

  • Strongest counter-argument: The teacher is speaking about the supreme reality in dialogue; the dialogue, the translation and the reader’s understanding actually occur in this world, so the speaking itself already proves the complete self-inclusion of philosophical speech and cognition that ① requires.

  • Adjudicated reply: That the teaching is taking place is a fact;

43 / 4913. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj13. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
  • but “the fact occurs in the world” is not the same as the author having positively explained, from within the thought, how “the proposing, translating and understanding of this teaching” form part of a more basic structure. Dialogues 79 and 85 do contain statements that treat speaking as symbolic activity and withdraw its independent reality (E-12, E-18); dialogue 62 brings the witness into the supreme (E-22), giving ①’s first condition a substantive clue, but there is still an interpretive gap between the witness and the whole of speech and understanding. More importantly, even if the first condition fully held, it would not replace the complete cognitive deletion test of the second. Therefore ① cannot be declared passed merely because the dialogue exists; the C-grade dispute is kept, and the T2 limitation is maintained for all the evidence.

14. Comparison with Neighbours

With No.33 Ramana: both speak of returning to the self and going beyond knower / known, but Ramana’s main material is his own original works, while Nisargadatta can at present only be judged through translated and edited T2 dialogue utterances; the two may not supply evidence for each other.

44 / 4913. Strongest Objections and Replies (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj14. Comparison with Neighbours (cont.)

With No.31 Śaṅkara: the doctrine of brahman, self and ignorance is the latter’s systematic argument, and cannot directly replace the levels of “I am / witness / supreme”, sometimes differing among themselves, in I Am That.

Discipline of comparison|The positions of different archives can only be compared through the same functional deletion test, and may not be upgraded because someone seems more mystical, closer to some tradition, or on the strength of later sayings.

15. Final Summary

45 / 4914. Comparison with Neighbours (cont.)
Thought Archive No.34|Nisargadatta Maharaj15. Final Summary (cont.)

Conclusion of the deletion test|Delete only the function of right cognition “discerning false identity / tracing back the source of consciousness”, without at the same time deleting existence, freedom, the will to practise or the ordinary report of “I am”. (a) Ground layer: reality does not hold by virtue of saying “I am”; the deletion passes. (b) Concrete path layer: deleting only the particular practice of “continually holding on to I am”, there still remain other formulations — the discernment of non-contrivance in dialogue 79 (E-06), awareness of awareness itself in dialogue 62 (E-22), tracing back the source in dialogue 68 (E-23) — so it cannot be proved that a single path is absolutely necessary in the whole book; it may not be automatically upgraded to ②.

Version check and limits|I Am That is cited by dialogue number from the public English translated and edited transmission; the contexts of dialogues 62, 68, 87 and 100 have been read, but this is not a collation of the Marathi recordings or of first-hand original language. The English keywords “understanding”, “witness”, “awareness”, “consciousness” and “I am” differ in rendering and context across dialogues, and cannot be simply fixed at one and the same metaphysical level without testing against the full text. The T2 limitation is applied equally to ① and ②.

Review of text levels|This archive never treats the English edited dialogues of I Am That as Nisargadatta’s unmediated verbatim words: the original conversations were mainly in Marathi, often mixed with on-the-spot translation; the recordings were translated into English by Maurice Frydman and then revised and selected by Sudhakar S. Dikshit; the titles and divisions of the 101 dialogues belong to the editorial layer.

Evidence still lacking|No systematic collation against ancient manuscripts / facsimiles of original editions; no word-by-word check of all divergences between English translations and the original language; where research is insufficient, limitations are kept at C/T2, and completed collation is not claimed.
