# Śaṅkara（Advaita Vedānta）

## Common research question

**Why does Śaṅkara discuss ignorance in nondual Vedānta?**

Śaṅkara's Advaita asks how empirical differentiation is experienced if ultimate reality is nondual. Ignorance is not simply a second independent substance beside brahman. The role of liberating knowledge must be examined in authenticated commentarial works rather than inferred from popular sayings or later texts of disputed attribution.

## Interpretive boundary

Distinguish securely attributed commentaries from disputed works and later Advaita traditions.

- [E-04 ｜ Preamble of the Brahmasūtrabhāṣya : “The wise call this superimposition ignorance, and call determining the true nature of a thing by discrimination knowledge; … the locus is not stained in the least by the faults or merits of what is superimposed”](#E-04)
