# Upaniṣads（Vedic tradition）

## Common research question

**Do all Upanishads teach the same identity of self and Brahman?**

The Upaniṣads are a diverse body of texts, not one book by a single author. They treat self, brahman, death, knowledge, and liberation in different ways. The formula “identity of ātman and brahman” helps approach some passages but cannot stand for every Upaniṣad without discrimination.

## Interpretive boundary

The object is a textual corpus; later Vedānta cannot be substituted for each original text.

## Archive evidence

- [E-01 ｜ Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 1.4.10: “It knew only itself: ‘I am brahman’; therefore it became everything; whoever among the gods awakened to this became that”](#E-01)
- [E-20 ｜ Chāndogya Upaniṣad 6.8.7: “That which is the finest essence — this whole world has it as its self. That is the real; that is the self. You are that, Śvetaketu”](#E-20)
- [E-25 ｜ Taittirīya Upaniṣad 2.1: “The knower of brahman attains the highest… brahman is truth, knowledge, the infinite; whoever knows it hidden in the cave of the heart… enjoys all desires together with brahman the wise”](#E-25)
