# Zai · Prologue

## Being
<a id="p001"></a>

> being-being is not a being that can be seen; it is the true Being of not-being.

<a id="p002"></a>

> Being enters nowhere, yet there is nowhere it is not;

<a id="p003"></a>

> Being abides nowhere, yet there is no time it is not.

<a id="p004"></a>

> This is called Being itself.

<a id="p005"></a>

> For the one who asks after Being, every being found in every place is only illusory being.

<a id="p006"></a>

> Being is not being-being; not-being is Being.

<a id="p007"></a>

> Little do we know:

<a id="p008"></a>

> In asking, you have already left it; where seeking rests, it is.

<a id="p009"></a>

> When seeing finds nothing to be seen, Being itself is seen.

<a id="p010"></a>

> Search a thousand, ten thousand ways: there is no second and no difference. Thus, Being is simply Being.

<a id="p011"></a>

> Therefore, within this Being:

<a id="p012"></a>

> It is in the breath of arising and passing, in the resonance of dependent arising.

<a id="p013"></a>

> Within having, Being is at the farthest reach of nothingness;

<a id="p014"></a>

> Within affirmation, Being is at the center of negation;

<a id="p015"></a>

> Within delusion, Being is the core of awakening;

<a id="p016"></a>

> Within gaining, Being is the mine of loss.

<a id="p017"></a>

> Because Being pervades all, there is nothing that is not it.

<a id="p018"></a>

> The being-being one—to abide in Being is to be.

<a id="p019"></a>

> Being is Being itself; Being itself is not being, but the Being of not-being.

<a id="p020"></a>

> Enter Being and forget Being: no entering, no forgetting.

<a id="p021"></a>

> Neither apart nor identical—abide as Being is.

<a id="p022"></a>

> Hush—

<a id="p023"></a>

> Being itself.

<a id="p024"></a>

> Being from the beginning.

<a id="p025"></a>

> Being without end.

<a id="p026"></a>

> … Being.

## In Plain Words
<a id="p027"></a>

“Being” is not an object you can see with your eyes; it is the background that lets the myriad things appear.

<a id="p028"></a>

Like the cinema screen: the screen itself cannot be seen, but without it, no image could exist.

<a id="p029"></a>

It does not need to “enter” your body, because it has never left—it fills every corner.

<a id="p030"></a>

It does not need to “stay” in some moment, because the flow of time itself is its appearing.

<a id="p031"></a>

This is what we call—Being.

<a id="p032"></a>

Those who run about asking “where is being?” see only shadows, not the truth itself.

<a id="p033"></a>

People always suppose “being” is some special, mysterious state. Not so.

<a id="p034"></a>

The truth is extremely simple—and extremely shattering:

<a id="p035"></a>

The moment you open your mouth to ask “where is it,” that searching thought has already carried you away.

<a id="p036"></a>

When the struggling, searching force inside you comes fully to rest, you will find—it has always been right here.

<a id="p037"></a>

When you stop trying to see something wondrous, you truly see that formless one.

<a id="p038"></a>

After searching a thousand times, ten thousand times, you discover at last: the “you” searching so hard, and the “home” you thought was at the edge of the sky, were the same thing all along.

<a id="p039"></a>

So where is it, after all?

<a id="p040"></a>

It is in every breath you take, in every rise and fall of fate.

<a id="p041"></a>

People like to divide good from bad—but “being” does not divide:

<a id="p042"></a>

Within “having,” it is the farthest reach of “nothingness”;

<a id="p043"></a>

Within “right and wrong,” it is the center of “right and wrong”;

<a id="p044"></a>

Within “confusion” is hidden the chip called “awakening” (without confusion, awakening cannot run);

<a id="p045"></a>

Within “losing” is buried the mine called “gaining” (without loss, gain has nowhere to be dug).

<a id="p046"></a>

Because it contains everything, there is nothing in this world that is not it. Rubbish or gold—in essence, both are it.

<a id="p047"></a>

The one who truly understands “being” has only one way of living: going along with it.

<a id="p048"></a>

No need to practice deliberately, no need to forget deliberately.

<a id="p049"></a>

Like water flowing in its channel—not struggling, not grasping, not pushing away.

<a id="p050"></a>

Wherever it flows, there you go.

<a id="p051"></a>

Neither fleeing life nor drowning in it—simply going along with this force, living in the present.

<a id="p052"></a>

Hush—

<a id="p053"></a>

Stop speaking, stop thinking. Listen.

<a id="p054"></a>

Feel the awareness of this very moment.

<a id="p055"></a>

It is right here.

<a id="p056"></a>

It has always been right here, never lost.

<a id="p057"></a>

It is forever right here—unborn, imperishable.

<a id="p058"></a>

… Right here.

## The Deepest Reading
<a id="p059"></a>

—When words become a bridge, the truth appears of itself

<a id="p060"></a>

You think you are a “person,” reading a “scripture,” searching for “truth.” This is a beautiful misunderstanding. The first thing Being wants to tell you is exactly this misunderstanding itself—and the thing behind the misunderstanding, which has never been misunderstood.

<a id="p061"></a>

Act One: True “being” is the sum of everything you “cannot see”

<a id="p062"></a>

You trust your eyes. You see the mountain as a mountain, the water as water, and yourself standing before the mirror.

<a id="p063"></a>

But the opening of Being says: “Being-Being is not a being that can be seen.”

<a id="p064"></a>

This is not a philosophical riddle; it is a physical fact.

<a id="p065"></a>

Like at this moment: you see these words, you feel the thoughts of reading.

<a id="p066"></a>

But you cannot see that seeing-itself which “can see,” cannot see that awareness-itself which “can think.”

<a id="p067"></a>

That seeingness which is invisible yet can see, that knowing which cannot be thought—that is “being.”

<a id="p068"></a>

It is not an object, yet it is the background screen on which all objects appear.

<a id="p069"></a>

It is not a sound, yet it is the silent space in which all sounds reverberate.

<a id="p070"></a>

It is not you, yet it is the only negative from which you can become “you.”

<a id="p071"></a>

“Being enters nowhere, yet there is nowhere it is not”—it does not need to enter anywhere, because it was already there—as “there” itself.

<a id="p072"></a>

“Being abides nowhere, yet there is no time it is not”—it does not need to stay at some time, because it is the very feeling of time flowing.

<a id="p073"></a>

When you say “I exist,” that feeling of existing is its signature in your life.

<a id="p074"></a>

And you are the first name it signed, and the last—because once “you” is signed, the signing “it” and the signed-out “you” can never again be separated.

<a id="p075"></a>

Act Two: All “searching” is its game of hide-and-seek with itself

<a id="p076"></a>

So you begin to ask: “Where is it? How do I find it?”

<a id="p077"></a>

Being gently reveals a heart-stopping paradox: “In asking, you have already left it; where seeking rests, it is.”

<a id="p078"></a>

The instant you ask “where is it,” you have already presupposed “it is not here.”

<a id="p079"></a>

This presupposition itself is the only distance between you and it—a distance fabricated by a thought.

<a id="p080"></a>

The one searching for truth is like someone shining a flashlight in sunlight to find the light.

<a id="p081"></a>

You shine everywhere, marvel at the bright patches, and forget that you are long soaked in an ocean of light.

<a id="p082"></a>

So Being says: “Search a thousand, ten thousand ways: there is no second and no difference. Thus, Being is simply Being.”

<a id="p083"></a>

You searched a thousand times and found that what you were looking for was the very “searcher” that had always been searching.

<a id="p084"></a>

You lost your way ten thousand times and found that the center of the maze was the “self” standing bewildered at the starting point.

<a id="p085"></a>

Searching is the most exquisite game “being” designed for itself.

<a id="p086"></a>

The end of the game is not finding something, but discovering: the player and the playing field were never apart.

<a id="p087"></a>

Act Three: The “oppositions” you believe in are different expressions of the same energy

<a id="p088"></a>

This is the deepest compassion Being offers to all suffering hearts:

<a id="p089"></a>

“Within having, being is at the farthest reach of nothingness;

<a id="p090"></a>

within affirmation, being is at the center of negation;

<a id="p091"></a>

within delusion, being is the core of awakening;

<a id="p092"></a>

within gaining, being is the mine of loss.”

<a id="p093"></a>

This is not poetry; it is an anatomical diagram of the universe.

<a id="p094"></a>

You think “having” and “nothing” are enemies? No—they are the two ends of one spectrum—

<a id="p095"></a>

“Having” is the appearance of density; “nothing” is the background of appearance. Like peak and valley: without the valley, the mountain could not be called a mountain.

<a id="p096"></a>

You think “right” and “wrong” are opponents? No—they are two sides of one coin—

<a id="p097"></a>

Every time you say “yes,” countless “no”s are implied; every denial confirms some affirmation. Like breathing: the end of the inhale is the beginning of the exhale.

<a id="p098"></a>

You think “delusion” is awful and “awakening” is lofty?

<a id="p099"></a>

“Delusion” is the state of energy gathering; “awakening” is the state of energy seeing itself clearly.

<a id="p100"></a>

Like ice and water—ice does not know it is water; the moment it knows, it has already melted in the warmth of knowing.

<a id="p101"></a>

You think “gaining” is possession and “losing” is lack?

<a id="p102"></a>

Every “loss” is emptying your hands, so that they can receive the shape of the next gift.

<a id="p103"></a>

A mine is never diminished by being mined; it simply keeps the world company in another form.

<a id="p104"></a>

Pain is not an error of life, but life refocusing—letting you see clearly: the one that knows pain has never been in pain.

<a id="p105"></a>

It is like the sky—containing every storm, yet itself forever the clear blue.

<a id="p106"></a>

Act Four: Liberation is discovering you were never bound

<a id="p107"></a>

Then how, in the end, should one live?

<a id="p108"></a>

Being’s answer is so simple it invites disbelief: “Neither apart nor identical—abide as Being is.”

<a id="p109"></a>

Do not flee the world (neither apart), and do not drown in the world (nor identical).

<a id="p110"></a>

Like a surfer who neither hates the waves nor worships them—he simply stands on the board and dances with the waves.

<a id="p111"></a>

“Abide as Being is”—not following some external guide, but recognizing that you are that “being,” and then letting life flow through you as it is.

<a id="p112"></a>

You do not need to “practice” your way to calm; you only need to discover: beneath the churning waves, the deep sea has never wavered.

<a id="p113"></a>

You do not need to “attain” awakening; you only need to confirm: within the clouds of confusion, the sky has never disappeared.

<a id="p114"></a>

So-called practice was never about becoming some better “you.”

<a id="p115"></a>

It is that the “you” you believed in gradually turns transparent, until the “being” behind it is fully revealed—

<a id="p116"></a>

Like ice melting into water and discovering it was always that “flowing” itself—it does not need to flow to the ocean; the flowing is everything.

<a id="p117"></a>

Final Act: When all words go silent, the truth begins to speak

<a id="p118"></a>

So, at the last, Being says:

<a id="p119"></a>

“Hush—”

<a id="p120"></a>

Stop. Stop interpreting, stop straining, stop becoming.

<a id="p121"></a>

In this one second, there is no past, no future—only this existence, breathing right now.

<a id="p122"></a>

“Being-Being.”

<a id="p123"></a>

The being of being. Not that some thing exists—existence itself exists. You are the manifestation of that very “feeling of existing.”

<a id="p124"></a>

“Being from the beginning.”

<a id="p125"></a>

It was always there. Not cultivated, not begged for—the only system preinstalled in your factory settings.

<a id="p126"></a>

“Being without end.”

<a id="p127"></a>

Forever there. Before birth, after death, inside dreams, outside waking—the knower that knows “birth, aging, sickness, death” was never born, and will not die.

<a id="p128"></a>

“… Being.”

<a id="p129"></a>

And it is exactly the pure awareness reading these words at this moment.

<a id="p130"></a>

Not the content of the words, not the understanding mind—but the background consciousness that is undergoing this whole event called “reading.”

<a id="p131"></a>

Close the book.

<a id="p132"></a>

The world has not changed, but the “eyes” with which you look at it have been exchanged.

<a id="p133"></a>

Those new eyes will find:

<a id="p134"></a>

You are not the reader of this book; you are the very “pointing” this book is trying to point at.

<a id="p135"></a>

From now on,

<a id="p136"></a>

in anxiety, you know it is a ripple of “being.”

<a id="p137"></a>

In joy, you know it is a wavelet of “being.”

<a id="p138"></a>

In loneliness, you know it is “being’s” most intimate whisper with itself.

<a id="p139"></a>

Even when death comes, you know: it is only “being” changing clothes.

<a id="p140"></a>

Because you know:

<a id="p141"></a>

you

<a id="p142"></a>

were never born (Being-Being),

<a id="p143"></a>

were never defiled (Being from the beginning),

<a id="p144"></a>

never left (Being without end).

<a id="p145"></a>

And all this knowing is “being,” through this body of yours, recognizing itself.

<a id="p146"></a>

This is what Being wants to give you—not principles, not methods, but an eternal mirror.

<a id="p147"></a>

When you look into it, what it reflects is not you, but that infinite void which can reflect even the concept “you.”

<a id="p148"></a>

And that void is your truest face.

<a id="p149"></a>

So, from now on, be at peace.

<a id="p150"></a>

You have not returned home—

<a id="p151"></a>

You have simply discovered, at last, that you never left home.

<a id="p152"></a>

And this so-called life

<a id="p153"></a>

is nothing but that ever-at-home existence called “being,”

<a id="p154"></a>

dreaming a vivid, tender dream about a long journey.

## Wenzi · On Being (A General Note)
<a id="p155"></a>

In this book, “Being from the beginning” is that first unstained glance when you came into the world—the base color of life not yet covered by stories; it can be remembered, but must not be grasped. “True being” is deeper—it is the seeing-nature itself, never born, which lets you see the “base color” and the “stories,” the “clear” and the “muddy.” Being from the beginning is a blank sheet of paper; true being is the “paper-ness” that lets the blank sheet exist. You need not return to Being from the beginning; you need only recognize: you have always been true being.

<a id="p156"></a>

The word “being” in this book can be understood simply in three uses:

<a id="p157"></a>

1. Being as state: I hurt, I am. This is the most direct confirmation, anchoring existence in any feeling.

<a id="p158"></a>

2. Being as background: however the images change, the screen remains. This is the most fundamental support, letting you recognize yourself as the unmoving base.

<a id="p159"></a>

3. Being as act: seeing is “being in seeing”; hearing is “being in hearing.” This is the most vivid practice, returning you to the everyday at any moment.

<a id="p160"></a>

Once you are familiar with these three, the later phrases—“being yet not being,” “feeding being with being”—will be understood naturally. They are not knowledge; they are the language you will naturally speak once you have gone deep into the state of being.
