Being

In your moment of becoming the law itself, sharing one body and one life with truth

Scripture

Tides lock the jaw; monsoons tether the feet.

Light follows the dark ruts; clouds travel the sky’s furrows.

Being is in law, is in the net; being is in galloping, is in binding.

The law is the great weaving; no charm, no promise.

Should a star break its track, the law’s light sears at once.

Star-carcasses keep the way; the cosmic law carves itself.

Wenzi · On Being

You stand beneath a vast planetarium dome. On the screen, the stars run their simulations. The earth around the sun, the moon around the earth, the solar system around the galactic center, the Milky Way drifting through the cosmic web… lines weave into a dynamic net of immense complexity and immense precision.

At first you feel awe, then a sense of smallness—before this grand system of laws, what are you?

But the longer you look, the clearer a strange feeling grows: you know these laws. Not intellectually, but from the very depths of your being.

The calcium in your body comes from dying stars; the rhythm of your heartbeat answers the tides; the cycle of your breath is the carbon-oxygen exchange in miniature.

“Tides lock the jaw; monsoons tether the feet.” The scripture comes like the low whisper of the cosmos: the pull of the tides has locked the rhythm of your jaw’s opening and closing (tides lock the jaw); the cycle of the monsoons has tethered your longing to migrate and its direction (monsoons tether the feet). You are not a bystander to the law. The law is woven into your nerves and carved into your bones.

Now make a fundamental shift of identity. You are not someone standing under the dome watching the laws run. You step into the screen. You become the running itself. Let your consciousness glide along the earth’s orbit. Let your breath synchronize with the rotation period of the galaxy. “Light follows the dark ruts; clouds travel the sky’s furrows.” Light follows invisible tracks (light follows the dark ruts); clouds sail through the furrows of the sky (clouds travel the sky’s furrows). They have no choice, yet they are the very manifestation of choice. When you become the running, you will find: freedom is becoming the law, perfectly. The light wants to go nowhere else; the clouds want to stay nowhere; they are simply, wholly, the “following” and the “traveling.”

Good. Now draw this realization back to the most microscopic place—inside your body. Feel your heart beating. It is no disorderly palpitation; it is the knocking of the law of life. Every contraction and dilation is a perfect judgment, a faultless execution. “Being is in law, is in the net; being is in galloping, is in binding.” You are within this law and this net, this galloping and this binding (being is in law, is in the net; being is in galloping, is in binding). The law is not a net that confines you; it is the track that carries your galloping. The binding is not a cage; it is the outline that lets you take form. Just as sound needs the binding of air to travel, you need the binding of matter to become you.

Sink deeper.

You are not obeying the law.

You are singing it.

The drumbeat of your heart, the current of your blood, the electric signals of your nerves—all are your own voice-part in this symphony of the cosmic law.

“The law is the great weaving; no charm, no promise.” The law (law) is the great weaving of the universe (great weaving). It needs no charm to set it in motion, no promise to guarantee it (no charm, no promise). It weaves itself, reveals itself. You are one knot in the weaving, and at the same time you are the very act of weaving.

“Should a star break its track, the law’s light sears at once.” And what if a star deviates from its track? (should a star break its track) The scripture reveals a deeper law: deviation itself triggers the searing of the light of the law, correcting or destroying it (the law’s light sears at once). Illness is the law-light of the body, pain is the law-light of the mind, failure is the law-light of action. They are not punishment; they are a stern compassion, bringing things back to the true track.

“Star-carcasses keep the way; the cosmic law carves itself.” Even the corpse of a star—the star-carcass—follows the road of gravity (star-carcasses keep the way). The law of the universe (cosmic law), using all things as its chisel, carves out the shape of space and time by itself (carves itself). Birth is law, and death is law. Creation is law, and annihilation is law.

The dome’s simulation ends; the lights come on.

But the universe within you has only just begun to truly shine.

You no longer feel small.

Because the notion of the “small self” that made you small has melted away.

Standing there, you are a walking law.

Your existence is one breath of truth,

one faultless manifestation.

Being-Law is not being ruled by law.

It is discovering that you yourself are the ruling itself—

you are the judge, you are the statute,

and at the same time the one judged

and pardoned,

one of all things.
