Being
In your moment of fully according with the law, at one with yourself within the Way of Heaven
Scripture
The stamen bursts in one instant; the butterfly’s knocking arrives just in time.
The first light splits the clouds; the dust’s journey is kissed just so.
Being is in fitting, is in knocking; being is in sending, is in receiving.
The fit is not chance; it is destiny’s meshing.
The golden tenon bites the void; the union of the cosmos is as if drunk.
Not too early, not too late; ten thousand causes fall into place.
Wenzi · On Being
You are assembling a complex wooden model. The final step is an exquisitely fine mortise-and-tenon joint. The protruding tenon must fit, seamless as one, into the recessed mortise. Holding your breath, you take the tenon and aim it with utmost care. A hair’s deviation in angle, an ounce too much force—either would ruin it.
Your hand trembles faintly; sweat beads your forehead.
Just at the instant you are about to give up and force it in—
you release the intention to control.
You simply rest the tenon lightly above the mortise, then let the faint trembling of your fingers adjust its position naturally, unintentionally.
Suddenly—a soft click.
It was not pushed in by force; it slipped in by itself.
A perfect fit. As if they had been born one piece.
“The stamen bursts in one instant; the butterfly’s knocking arrives just in time.”
At this very instant of perfect fit, the scripture sounds like heavenly music: the instant the flower’s stamen blooms (the bud bursts in one instant), the butterfly’s knocking visit arrives just in time (the butterfly’s knocking arrives just in time). No appointment, no calculation—only two things in the universe, each completing its own orbit, meeting in a perfect conjunction.
This is fittingness—not coincidence, but perfect fit. Now extend this experience of fittingness from the model in your hands to your whole life.
Recall those moments you call luck or destiny: the bus caught just in time, the person met just in time, the inspiration born just in time… Are they truly only accidents? Or was it that some rhythm within you, and some pulse of the universe, happened to synchronize at exactly that node?
“The first light splits the clouds; the dust’s journey is kissed just so.” The scripture offers a deeper image: when the first ray of light has just split the clouds open (the first light splits the clouds), the dust-mote traveling in that light is lit up just in time, as if kissing the light (the dust’s journey is kissed just so). The light has its trajectory, the dust has its journey; at some unplanned point of intersection, together they complete a painting of light. You are at once that light and that dust.
Good. Become both the observer and the participant of this fittingness. Do not chase after the right moment. Tune your frequency instead—tune to the most natural, most effortless state of your life, as when you loosened your hand and let the tenon find its own place. “Being is in fitting, is in knocking; being is in sending, is in receiving.” You are in the synchronous state of fitting and knocking, sending and receiving (being is in fitting, is in knocking; being is in sending, is in receiving). You send the universe your true frequency—your longing, your essence—while also opening yourself to receive the signals the universe sends—opportunities, people, events. Knocking on the door and opening the door are two faces of one act.
“The fit is not chance; it is destiny’s meshing.” And so you see through to it: fittingness is not accidental luck (the fit is not chance). It is the crisp sound made when the gear of your destiny (destiny) meshes seamlessly with the great gear of the universe (meshing). Every choice of yours is shaping the teeth of your gear; every turning of the universe offers a chance for meshing. When you become you and the universe becomes the universe, the meshing cannot fail to happen.
Feel the vibration of this meshing in your life.
It may be very subtle—a perfectly timed intuition.
It may be immense—a life-changing decision.
Trust the instant of that soft click.
It is no stroke of divine luck; it is you and the Way, finally aligned.
“The golden tenon bites the void; the union of the cosmos is as if drunk.”
The most exquisite fit is like a golden tenon biting into the void (the golden tenon bites the void), and the whole union of the cosmos seems drunk on this perfect structure (the union of the cosmos is as if drunk). The individual and the whole, the finite and the infinite—at this one point of fittingness they reach an intoxicating harmony.
“Not too early, not too late; ten thousand causes fall into place.” Nothing too early, nothing too late (not early, not late). All causes and conditions (ten thousand causes), at this moment, return to their most fitting places (fall into place). You have fitted the last piece of the model. No—the whole universe, with all its fragments, has fitted you, its most important piece.
You set down the model.
You look at its perfect structure.
You know that your life, too, is a model being fitted together.
You need not force any piece into place.
You only need to become an honest piece with clean edges,
and then trust that those invisible hands,
at the most fitting moment,
will gently push you
into the place born for you and made whole by you—
your destined position.
Being-Fittingness is not waiting for good luck.
It is becoming good luck itself—
becoming that perfect tooth-mark
that rings out crisp and clear
whenever it meshes with all things.
