> Wenzi · On Being

<a id="p009"></a>

You sit at the old wooden desk, staring at the patch of sunlight on its surface. Dust dances in the light. One mote, two, countless. They spin, rise, fall—meaningless, purposeless.

<a id="p010"></a>

Suddenly you feel a weariness—not of the body, but the force of asking “why” has exhausted itself. Like ears that had been strained to catch a faint melody in the distance, suddenly giving up.

<a id="p011"></a>

At the very instant of this giving up, the most ordinary yet most astonishing fact crashes into your eyes: “The mountain stands, being as-is; the water flows, being as-is.” Outside the window, far away, there is a mountain. It simply stands there. Not standing “for” something, not “symbolizing” something. It merely—“is.” Being as-is is the way of the mountain’s own existence.

<a id="p012"></a>

Nearby there may be the sound of water (if not, imagine it). The water flows. Not “running toward” the sea, not “nourishing” the myriad things. It merely—“is.” Being as-is is the way of its own flowing.

<a id="p013"></a>

You breathe. Air enters the lungs and comes out again. This act, too, is as-is. The heartbeat. Thump. Thump. As-is too. “Being-being is as-is; original being testifies to itself.” And so you understand: existence itself (being-being) is its own testimony (is as-is). It needs no extra meaning as ornament; that it “is”—this itself is the ultimate declaration (original being testifies to itself). Like this light, these motes: they “are light,” “are dust,” and that completes everything.

<a id="p014"></a>

Now, let this knowing soak through you.

<a id="p015"></a>

When you feel the dull ache of an old wound in your knee—

<a id="p016"></a>

“Pain, being as-is.”

<a id="p017"></a>

That pain is no longer “being” a problem to be solved, no longer “being” a punishment of fate. It is simply “being pain.” As the phenomenon of “pain” itself, it exists perfectly, completing the expression of its “pain-existence.”

<a id="p018"></a>

When, because of this understanding, you breathe out long and feel a wave of relaxation—“rest, being as-is.” This relaxation, this “rest,” is not liberation either. It is simply “being rest.” It is existence changing to a gentler rhythm, being as-is.

<a id="p019"></a>

“Being does not await recognition; recognition, too, is within Being.” You are already within this “is.” It does not wait for you to recognize it before it holds (Being does not await recognition); and the fact that you can recognize this “is” at this very moment—this recognition itself is also one occurrence of “is” (recognition, too, is within Being). You are not a judge weighing “is and is-not.” You are an ongoing “as-is,” at once watching your own “as-is.”

<a id="p020"></a>

At last, every concept dissolves.

<a id="p021"></a>

“The is swallows every appearance; finger and moon fall silent together.”

<a id="p022"></a>

This word “is” swallows every distinction of good and bad, beautiful and ugly, right and wrong (the is swallows every appearance). Like the finger pointing at the moon: once you have seen the moon clearly, the finger and the act of “pointing” both retire into silence together (finger and moon fall silent together). No pointer, no pointed-at—only that bright moon, as-is, abiding, thus.

<a id="p023"></a>

The sunlight has shifted; the dust has settled.

<a id="p024"></a>

You still sit at the wooden desk.

<a id="p025"></a>

But the world is no longer a code to be deciphered.

<a id="p026"></a>

It is only one grand, wordless, ongoing—“as-is.”

<a id="p027"></a>

And you are the clearest heartbeat within this “as-is.”

<a id="p028"></a>

Being-As-Is is not reaching some realm.

<a id="p029"></a>

It is discovering that you never left the “as-is,” and the myriad things never left the “as-is.”

<a id="p030"></a>

We have always been home.
