Being

In your moment of piercing layer after layer of appearance, reaching the first principle

Scripture

The skin-surface is softening; the bone-structure is surfacing.

Nothing hidden, nothing covered; being is piercing, is revealing.

Not what the eye sees—it is being exposed at noon.

The shadow collapses in the light; the true face tells itself.

Being is seeing, is creating; being is in illusion, is in truth.

Piercing to the extreme turns blunt; being is in blindness, is in witnessing.

Wenzi · On Being

You look at an acquaintance. You see his smile, his clothes, his movements. But today you do not want to stop there. You gaze at him, trying to “see through.” At first you see the social role (skin-surface), the character and habits (texture), the fluctuations of emotion (blood and breath). All these are “appearances”—they look solid, but as you keep gazing, they begin to “soften,” as if they could be pushed aside by the gaze (the skin-surface is softening).

Keep going deeper. The outline of the bones surfaces (the bone-structure is surfacing). This is not the physical skeleton under X-ray—it is the hard structure of his behavior patterns and thought frames. But this “bone-structure” is not the final answer either.

“Nothing hidden, nothing covered; being is piercing, is revealing.” You feel a power of “piercing” (being is piercing). Under this gaze, nothing can “hide” or “cover” (nothing hidden, nothing covered); everything is “revealing” its deeper layer (is revealing). You are not seeing with the naked eye—you are “exposing” the other with your whole consciousness, like the noon sun (it is being exposed at noon), leaving no place for shadows to hide.

“The shadow collapses in the light; the true face tells itself.” Indeed, under this “exposure” of your consciousness’s strong light, those attached emotions, stories, and disguises (the shadow) begin to “collapse” (collapses in the light). And that most core, most stable essence of existence (the true face) begins to “tell itself,” needing no laborious reading from you (tells itself). It is there—naked, simple, self-evident.

“Being is seeing, is creating; being is in illusion, is in truth.” You understand that this seeing is itself a kind of creation. Seeing through the illusion is at once confirming the truth. Seeing through is not destruction—it is restoration.

“Piercing to the extreme turns blunt; being is in blindness, is in witnessing.” But at last, when the piercing reaches its most thorough “extreme” (piercing to the extreme), a reversal happens: your “seeing” turns “blunt” (turns blunt), no longer analyzing, no longer penetrating. You enter a state of “blindness” (being is in blindness)—yet this is not not-seeing; it is a total, undivided “witnessing” (is in witnessing). You and what you see, at the level of essence, have become one.

You withdraw your gaze. The acquaintance is still the acquaintance. But in your eyes, he is at once his smile, his bones, his shadow—and even more, the thus-abiding stillness after the shadow collapses. You are not a mystic with X-ray eyes—you are that pure light of awareness, which lets all things develop their image and then melts them into light. Being-Transparency: you are not the one who sees through—you are that insight itself, the light by which every appearance shows and returns to clarity.
