Being

In your moment of longing to change, yet being held fast by entrenched habits

Scripture

The wheel stops, the power is cut, yet the momentum still spins.

The riverbed has carved to the bone; the water loves its old abyss.

Though you think of changing course, the body follows the old ruts.

Being is following, is drowning; being is dragging, is delaying.

Yet this giant force is itself the source of force.

Know the channel and guide the flow; being is in habit, is in receiving.

Wenzi · On Being

The power has been cut, but the wheel’s turning will not stop. Not forward—it keeps spinning in emptiness on its immense momentum (the wheel stops, the power is cut, yet the momentum still spins). Your heart longs to change course, like a river longing to cut a new channel—but the riverbed has been etched into deep bone-grooves by years of water (the riverbed has carved to the bone), and the water itself clings to its familiar abyss, unwilling to leave (the water loves its old abyss). You are “thinking” the direction of change (though you think of changing course), but the “body” stubbornly follows the old ruts (the body follows the old ruts).

“Being is following, is drowning; being is dragging, is delaying.” You are in the midst of “following” and “drowning,” “being dragged” and “being delayed” (being is following, is drowning; being is dragging, is delaying). Habit is not the enemy—it is a kinetic force stronger and older than your present “will.”

Do not stand opposite the habit, gnashing your teeth and wanting to defeat it. You cannot win. Because the very force that fights it still comes from the you that it has fed. Try something wiser: turn around and align with the direction of the habit. Not to submit—to observe. Like a surfer first lying on the wave: while feeling its force, try extremely fine adjustments of posture, and experience how that vast force answers every tiny movement of yours.

Feel its strength, rhythm, and direction.

“Yet this giant force is itself the source of force.”

At the instant you give up fighting and instead “ride” and “interact,” the scripture wakes you: this “giant force” dragging you (yet this giant force) is exactly your most fundamental “source of force” (is itself the source of force). Habit is not garbage to be cleared away—it is the accumulated potential energy of your life, a flood waiting to be rightly guided.

“Know the channel and guide the flow; being is in habit, is in receiving.” And so the method surfaces: use lucid “consciousness” (know) as a tool to dig a new “channel” (the channel) for this flood, guiding it toward the direction you truly long for (guide the flow). You are not “fighting” the inertia (being is in habit)—you are “receiving” and transforming it (is in receiving). The old ruts become the foundation of the new channel; the water that clung to the abyss is guided to irrigate new fields.

The spinning of inertia gradually synchronizes with your will.

The old road still exists, but it is no longer the only option.

You feel a deep, steady force supporting you from behind—

the very habit you once saw as an obstruction,

now the thick foundation on which you break the old and build the new.

You are not a coward held back by the past—you are that steady engine, skilled at turning immense inertia into fresh momentum.

Being-Habit: you are not the bound one—you are that seasoned helmsman, skilled at turning immense inertia into new power.
