Being

In your moment of repeating mistakes, caught in the fateful loop

Scripture

The snake swallows its tail; teeth lock, scales overlap.

Being is swallowing, is giving birth; being is birthing, is perishing.

Step by step retreading; the old traces are repeating.

One thought of awareness, and the loop breaks into a stair.

Being is looping, is rising; the spiral is lifting.

The beginning is the end; the great circle lacks nothing.

Wenzi · On Being

Once again, you stand at a familiar crossroads. You know you should take the new road on the left, but your body, as if drawn by invisible threads, steps unbidden once more onto the old road on the right, walked countless times before. You feel like a snake, straining to crawl forward and break free, only to find in terror that your own tail has somehow been taken in your mouth (the snake swallows its tail). Teeth and scales bite tightly together (teeth lock, scales overlap), forming a perfect, hopeless closed loop.

“Being is swallowing, is giving birth; being is birthing, is perishing.” The scripture reveals the dynamics of this cycle: you are “swallowing” your own past (being is swallowing), and this very swallowing “gives birth” to your present and future (is giving birth). And every “birth” contains the seed of the next “perishing” (being is birthing, is perishing). You retread the old traces step by step (step by step retreading), because the old traces themselves are the looping script of your living and dying (the old traces are repeating).

Do not struggle with force; that will only make the teeth lock tighter.

Stop. Right on this old road, stop completely.

Then do the one thing that might break the deadlock:

Move your whole awareness off the “road,” off the “destination.”

For the action you are repeating at this moment, give it a simple name in your heart—say, “one more right turn.” Then, as if watching slow motion, observe the whole process from “deciding to turn right” to “the body turning right.”

Move toward that act of “repeating” itself.

Move toward that “familiar despair.”

Not to think about it—to feel its texture, temperature, and weight.

“One thought of awareness, and the loop breaks into a stair.”

At the instant your awareness, like a lamp, illuminates “the repeating” itself (one thought of awareness), the miracle happens: that seemingly unbreakable closed loop (the loop), in the light of awareness, shows a thread of “break” (breaks). And at this break, there is no fall—instead, a step of “stair” rises up out of thin air (into a stair).

“Being is looping, is rising; the spiral is lifting.” And so you have passed from the horizontal, closed “looping” (being is looping) into the vertical, open “rising” (is rising). The old road is still the old road, but each repetition of your walking, because of this awareness, accumulates into one ring of an upward spiral (the spiral is lifting). You are not circling on a plane—you are climbing in three dimensions.

“The beginning is the end; the great circle lacks nothing.” At last you realize the ultimate meaning of the closed loop: from the view of this spiral, the starting point is the ending point (the beginning is the end). You have not broken a small circle—you have merged into a greater circle that unifies looping and rising, one that “lacks nothing” (the great circle lacks nothing). Fate is not a chain; it is the orbit of a spiral.

Your steps still walk the old road, but your heart, on a higher ring of the spiral, quietly looks down. And this looking down itself brings an unprecedented clarity and calm. You are not a prisoner of the wheel—you are that spiral itself; you are the vertical dimension quietly grown by the tail-swallowing snake in its eternal circling. Being-Loop: you are not the trapped one—you are that sacred circling which must happen, so that the ascent may be.
