Being

In your moment of noise flooding in, disturbing the signal of truth

Scripture

The ear-shell is like a jar; a mosquito-thunder is roaring.

Neither sound nor silence; being is drilling, is humming.

Thoughts invade like bandits; being is disturbed, is expanding.

The disturbance expands into grain; the grain is a book of heaven.

Not a demonic barrier—the world knocking at the door.

Silence without disturbance—that is the true deafness.

Wenzi · On Being

A mosquito, just as you are about to fall asleep, flies close to your ear. Not one—in your imagination, magnified ten thousand times, the roar of one mosquito’s beating wings. That sound has the physical property of a drill: it bores into your ear canal and creates a humming vortex at the center of your skull. You want to block it, but it grows clearer through your very resistance. This is not sound; it is a pure “disturbance,” reaching the nerves.

“The ear-shell is like a jar; a mosquito-thunder is roaring.” The scripture describes your predicament precisely: the ear is like a jar, magnifying a tiny mosquito’s hum into a thunderous roar (the ear-shell is like a jar; a mosquito-thunder is roaring). It is “neither sound nor silence”—not meaningful sound, not true stillness, but a sustained state of “drilling” and “humming” invasion (neither sound nor silence; being is drilling, is humming).

“Thoughts invade like bandits; being is disturbed, is expanding.” Worse: thoughts invade like enemy bandits (thoughts invade like bandits). This “disturbance” itself is expanding (being is disturbed, is expanding), spreading from hearing to emotion, to the whole mental space. You are filled by it.

Stop the futile efforts to “kill the mosquito” or “block the sound.” Make a thorough reversal: move your whole attention away from the judgment of “this sound is annoying.” Then, as if listening to abstract music, analyze it with focus: is its pitch steady or fluctuating? Is it clearer in your left ear or right? Does the echo it makes inside your skull have a sense of space?

With absolute focus and curiosity, listen to that “humming” itself. “The disturbance expands into grain; the grain is a book of heaven.” When you “listen” this way, the expansion of the disturbance (the disturbance expands) begins to show a wondrous “grain” (into grain). The hum is no longer noise; it has become a rhythmic, structured pattern of vibration. The scripture whispers at this moment: this grain is a book of heaven (the grain is a book of heaven). The disturbance itself is writing, for you, a code beyond language.

“Not a demonic barrier—the world knocking at the door.” So this is not a demonic barrier come to obstruct you (not a demonic barrier). It is the world, in a rough and direct way, “knocking” at your door (the world knocking at the door). It is testing your steadiness with noise, and passing you messages through the grain.

“Silence without disturbance—that is the true deafness.” At last you reach a paradox: that death-like silence with no disturbance at all (silence without disturbance) is perhaps the true “deafness” (that is the true deafness). Because it would mean you have shut every receiving channel. And this irritating “disturbance” of the moment proves exactly that you are still alive, still receiving—your door is still open.

The hum has disappeared at some point, or merged into the background. You find that the inner restlessness has settled, replaced by a lucid focus. The disturbance never truly harmed you; it was only a coarse file, polishing your awareness bright. You are not a victim troubled by noise—you are that space of awareness itself, made unusually clear and still through the tempering of noise.

Being-Disturbance: you are not the invaded one—you are the door being knocked on, the clear space in which noise turns into grain and grain can be read.
