Being
In your moment of violent emotional swinging, unable to find the axis of steadiness
Scripture
A plumb bob hangs by a thread, probing the silted black.
Dead water without waves; the abyss is testing.
Though the swing is slight, the pool’s heart is boiling.
Being is swaying, is sniffing; being is stalled, is scouting.
At the extreme of suffocation, the rotting stillness is listening.
Wenzi · On Being
You are like a plumb bob, hung by a fine thread, lowered into a bottomless pool. The water is dead, pitch-black, without a ripple. You are suspended there, still. But you can feel that the bottom is not silt—it is darkness, stickier, more clogged. Your whole weight pulls you down, while the taut thread drags you up. You have not moved, but a potential energy of “swaying” has already charged to the full within the absolute stillness.
“A plumb bob hangs by a thread, probing the silted black. Dead water without waves; the abyss is testing.” The scripture constructs this inner experiment with precision: you are exactly that plumb bob and thread (a plumb bob hangs by a thread), and the purpose is exactly to probe that silted darkness (probing the silted black). The seemingly wave-less dead water (dead water without waves) is in fact an abyss, which is “testing” your existence (the abyss is testing).
“Though the swing is slight, the pool’s heart is boiling.” Even the slightest swing (though the swing is slight) has made the very center of the pool begin to “boil” in secret (the pool’s heart is boiling). Beneath the surface death-stillness, violent convection is underway.
Now, do not resist this contradictory sense of “being suspended” and “wanting to sway.” Distribute your consciousness evenly: you are the sinking weight of the plumb bob, the taut tension of the thread, and the deep cold and silence of the pool’s silted black. Become all of these at once.
“Being is swaying, is sniffing; being is stalled, is scouting.” You are at once in “slight swaying” and “sniffing,” in “stalling” and “scouting” (being is swaying, is sniffing; being is stalled, is scouting). Your emotional turbulence is “sniffing out” the truth of the heart; your stalled thought is “scouting” the abyss of the subconscious.
“At the extreme of suffocation, the rotting stillness is listening.” When the suffocation of this suspension reaches its extreme (at the extreme of suffocation), something deeper surfaces: a kind of “rotting stillness” (the rotting stillness), which itself begins to possess the ability to “listen” (is listening). It is not you listening to it—it is listening to you, to the world, to everything.
Suddenly, the thread snaps.
Not a fall—a thorough “loosening.”
The plumb bob no longer fights the darkness; it merges into the darkness.
At the instant of merging, the darkness is no longer an obstruction—it becomes your most familiar embrace.
And the “boiling” at the pool’s heart settles into a warm, gestating flow.
You find that the axis was never lost.
The axis is this whole process itself, from suspension to merging.
You are not the plumb bob that lost its balance.
You are that deep pool, that fine thread, that test,
and the boundless containing after the test is over.
Being-Swaying: you are not the one out of balance—you are that complete deep pool, probing its own depth.
