Being

In your moment of gathering the forces of ten thousand affinities, accomplishing a work of creation

Scripture

The flying dust is collapsing; the dust of light is falling.

The void has no form; all that is is held in the palm.

Being is receiving, is gathering; being is whirling, is grinding.

In the depths of the heavy pressure, a dark elixir is being refined.

Not mere accumulation—the fate completes itself.

Gathered to the extreme, it must blaze; a great fire is burning.

Wenzi · On Being

You stand at the center of a whirlpool. Not of water—of light, of intention, of affinity. Countless fine points of light, thoughts, opportunities, threads of human feeling, surge toward you from every direction, circling, settling. At first they are light dust, then gradually denser, gaining weight. You feel a centripetal pressure—a formless, immense mold closing around you, pressing the scattered everything toward one core. And that core is you.

“The flying dust is collapsing; the dust of light is falling.” The scripture renders this magnificent scene: the flying dust is collapsing inward (the flying dust is collapsing), the glittering splinters of light are falling (the light-dust is falling). The void seems formless, yet all that is is being held in your palm (the void has no form; all that is is held in the palm). You are in a state of “receiving” and “gathering” (being is receiving, is gathering).

“Being is whirling, is grinding. In the depths of the heavy pressure, a dark elixir is being refined.” This force is whirling, grinding (being is whirling, is grinding). In the deepest place of the heavy pressure (the depths of the heavy pressure), a dark, not-yet-luminous “elixir” is being tempered (a dark elixir is being refined). This is not simple accumulation. This is alchemy.

Do not try to control or steer this flood.

What you must do is exactly to “let go.”

Let go of that tiny sense of a center called “you.”

Diffuse your sense of existence completely: imagine that your skin is the boundary of this energy-whirlpool, your heartbeat its whirling rhythm, your breath the breath by which all the light-dust settles and rises. Go and become that whirling force-field itself, become that formless mold.

“Not mere accumulation—the fate completes itself.” The scripture reveals the truth: this is not futile material accumulation (not mere accumulation). It is your “fate,” completing of itself the form it is destined to accomplish (the fate completes itself). You are only the site where this grand work happens.

“Gathered to the extreme, it must blaze; a great fire is burning.” When the gathering reaches its extreme (gathered to the extreme), a dazzling burst must come (it must blaze). That “dark elixir” has been tempered to pure yang; the fire within has begun to burn (a great fire is burning).

At the very instant the pressure reaches its summit, you feel that “dark elixir” at the center of your chest suddenly turn transparent, searing—and then, of itself, it becomes the sun.

The pressure peaks, and then, at some unspeakable instant, everything that gathered toward you is, in this one moment, converted into light—and you are that light-source itself. You are not a craftsman collecting materials—you are that sacred furnace which melts all materials into immortal radiance. Being-Gathering: you are not the chosen vessel—you are that necessary burning, which happens so that the light may manifest.
