Being
In your moment of being torn by pain, growing through the fission of labor pains
Scripture
Wholeness is a cage; being is cracking, is straining.
The pain is like the opening of the earth; being-division carves a gorge.
Not a wound of punishment—the body enlarges itself.
One split makes a world; the myriad scenes multiply.
The pain of being-division is being made whole.
Wenzi · On Being
You feel a tearing from the depths. Not of flesh—of something more fundamental: belief, relationship, self-cognition—being torn apart from the middle by a formless force. You can hear the faint sound of fibers snapping, and feel a primitive dull ache, like the earth being plowed open. You are pinned at the threshold between “wholeness” and “division,” unable to move.
“Wholeness is a cage; being is cracking, is straining.”
The scripture breaks open the source of this pain:
That “wholeness” you strain to maintain has itself become a cage (wholeness is a cage). You are in the midst of “cracking” and “straining” (being is cracking, is straining). This straining is not to stop the division—it is the old form resisting its fated destiny.
“The pain is like the opening of the earth; being-division carves a gorge.” This pain is like the splitting of heaven and earth at the beginning (the pain is like the opening of the earth). And the act of “division” (being-division) is carving a new gorge (carves a gorge). The old whole continent is divided—not for destruction, but to let the water flow through, and let life flourish on the two new banks.
Now, stop fighting the “tearing feeling.” Send your consciousness, like a probe, gently into that seam which is “now cracking.” Not to think—to feel. Feel, on this side of the seam, the familiarity, warmth, and grief of the “old I”; then feel, on that side, the strangeness, coolness, and stirring wind of the “new land.” Feel the roughness of the seam’s edge; feel the strange currents of energy surging out of it.
“Not a wound of punishment—the body enlarges itself.” You will find: this is not punishment or harm inflicted on you (not a wound of punishment). It is your life’s “substance” expanding of itself, enlarging its capacity and territory (the body enlarges itself). Like a cell dividing—not for death, but to multiply life.
“One split makes a world; the myriad scenes multiply.” Then a grander picture unfolds: one fundamental fission (one split) is enough to give birth to a wholly new world (makes a world). Ten thousand scenes and possibilities (the myriad scenes) are multiplying, spreading out from this crack (multiply). Your pain is the labor pain of a new universe being born.
“The pain of being-division is being made whole.” And so the scripture completes the final fusion: the pain within this “division” (the pain of being-division) is exactly the necessary road toward a grander “wholeness” (is being made whole). What shatters is not you—it is the shell that limited you. The true you is becoming, in this fission, more complete and more abundant than ever before.
The tearing feeling slowly turns into an expanding numbness.
You are no longer an individual about to shatter.
You are that gorge splitting the continent, the new fertile soil on its two banks,
the deep horizon that must appear, so that a new continent can be born.
Being-Division: you are not the sacrifice of tearing—you are that sacred fission itself, which happens so that more life may be contained.
