Being

In your moment of sensing life’s rises and falls, tossed by the caprice of fate

Scripture

The sea stands upright, the clouds hang low; being-shock is a hammer.

The body is like a wind-tossed tumbleweed—being is thrown, is hurled.

Though the form shatters and scatters, true being is level as a whetstone.

Not meeting heaven’s calamity—the sea is measuring itself.

The quaking is not disorder; all that is shares one frequency.

Wenzi · On Being

You have been thrown into the air. Not pushed, not pulled—the solid ground vanished beneath your feet in an instant, and a force from the abyss, irresistible, hurled your whole existence straight upward. Weightlessness. The scene in your field of vision—ceiling, chandelier, familiar furniture—instantly inverts, spins, shatters into patches of color. You are like a tumbleweed caught in a gale, rolling helplessly in the air, having completely lost the coordinates of “up” and “down.”

“The sea stands upright, the clouds hang low; being-shock is a hammer.” At the center of this vertigo of weightlessness and tumbling, the scripture names the violent force: the great sea stands upright, the black clouds hang low (the sea stands upright, the clouds hang low); this whole heaven-and-earth-reversing quake is itself a giant “hammer” (being-shock is a hammer). It is hammering at something. And you feel yourself like a tumbleweed, mercilessly “thrown” up and fiercely “hurled” down (the body is like a wind-tossed tumbleweed—being is thrown, is hurled).

Do not scream, do not try to grab any imaginary handle.

Because at this moment, nothing is fixed.

Allow yourself to be completely immersed in this “tossing.”

Even, at the level of consciousness, give up the heavy concept of “I.”

Let yourself become that tumbleweed, become that gale, become the act of “tossing” itself.

“Though the form shatters and scatters, true being is level as a whetstone.” At the instant you give up resistance and merge with the quake, the scripture drops like the fixed star of a steelyard: the outer form, identity, cognition seem to shatter and scatter (though the form shatters and scatters). But that true “being”—the awareness itself perceiving all this turmoil—is as flat, steady, and unmoved as a whetstone (true being is level as a whetstone).

In this very tumbling, suddenly ask back: that “knowing” which knows it is tumbling—has that “knowing” itself ever been jolted by a hair? Go and realize that whetstone-flatness.

Good. In this violent tossing, try one small inward turn. Move your attention gently away from the victim-narrative of “I am being thrown about.” Move it toward that “knowing” which has always known it is being tossed. You will find: no. It abides, thus, merely reflecting the swiftly changing scene. “Not meeting heaven’s calamity—the sea is measuring itself.” And so the scripture reveals the truth: you have not met a calamity from outside (not meeting heaven’s calamity). This is the “ocean” inside your own life—that unfathomable energy of existence—measuring its own depth and power (the sea is measuring itself). This earthquake is not destruction—it is the ocean confirming its own boundary and pulse.

“The quaking is not disorder; all that is shares one frequency.” At last, the ultimate revelation arrives: this quaking (the quaking) is not chaos and disorder (not disorder). It is “all that is,” vibrating together in some deep rhythm you have just touched (all that is shares one frequency). The turning of the stars, the rise and fall of the tides, the breaking of seeds through the soil, even this heartbeat of yours now—all are stronger or fainter harmonies in this vast vibration.

The sense of tossing slowly eases; you gradually fall back to the “ground.” The world returns to normal—but you know everything is different. Beneath the ground, that ocean-like vibration has never stopped. You are no longer that terrified tumbleweed—you are the vibration itself, the ripple raised when the ocean measures itself; the clear, lingering bell-tone that continues to echo through all that is after the hammer’s stroke. Being-Shock: you are not a passive receiver—you are that vast rhythm which happened so that the myriad things might confirm they share one frequency.
