<a id="p010"></a>

You stand there. The strong wind whips your clothes wild; below your feet is the silent suction of the abyss. A sentence has reached your lips, about to destroy or rebuild everything; a decision presses on your fingertip, about to open heaven or hell. That “critical point,” thin as a cicada’s wing, is trembling on the blade of your consciousness. A hair forward is destruction; a fraction back is sinking. And you are pinned between this “hair” and this “fraction.”

<a id="p011"></a>

“One thought apart lies a ten-thousand-zhang abyss.”

<a id="p012"></a>

The scripture renders this heart-stopping geometry:

<a id="p013"></a>

The difference of a single thought (one thought apart): on this side is footing, on that side a ten-thousand-zhang abyss. You are at the extreme point of “facing” and “peril” (being is at the brink, in peril). Your fate seems to hang on a line as fine as a single hair (life hangs on one line).

<a id="p014"></a>

“Step back and remain mortal bone; step forward and fly as immortal.” Take this step back, and you remain heavy mortal flesh (step back and remain mortal bone). Take this step forward, and perhaps you feather into an immortal—perhaps you are lost beyond redemption (step forward and fly as immortal). This is not rhetoric; it is the two-poled perception trembling in the depths of your cells. No middle ground, no buffer.

<a id="p015"></a>

“Either life or death; at this moment, no words.” Life, or death. Ascension, or fall. There is no third road (either life or death). Any language pales at this moment, any thought turns sluggish (at this moment, no words). You can hear the wind and thunder of fate roaring at your ears (wind and thunder flank the sides), but your heart must be like that still string on a fully drawn bow (the heart is like a string at rest)—not one rash stirring.

<a id="p016"></a>

Stop all calculation of “what to do.” That calculating “you” is itself the root of your swaying. Pull your whole awareness up by the roots, out of the dual choice of “forward or backward.”

<a id="p017"></a>

Then, lightly, lay this awareness on that line on which life hangs.

<a id="p018"></a>

Not to choose either end of the line—to become the line itself.

<a id="p019"></a>

Feel the absolute tautness of that line, and, within this tautness, a strange, absolute stillness.

<a id="p020"></a>

You are not the person swaying on the line—you are that string, drawn to the extreme, and therefore manifesting presence itself.

<a id="p021"></a>

“The critical leap—heaven and earth hang upside down.” At the instant you “become the line,” the meaning of “the critical” is transformed. It is no longer an outer gate you must “leap” through. That extreme, full tension has itself completed an inner “leap.” The order of the world seems reversed and rearranged (heaven and earth hang upside down)—no more up and down, forward and back. You are no longer the person facing the abyss; you are that “critical point” itself, made of abyss and cliff together.

<a id="p022"></a>

The wind still blows. The abyss is still silent beneath your feet. But the tremor inside you has settled. You know: whether the next step is falling or flying, it will be an arc flowing naturally out of this absolute stillness.

<a id="p023"></a>

You are not the jumper who must summon courage—you are that full, round, all-possibility-containing tension itself, before the leap happens.

<a id="p024"></a>

Being-Brink: you are not a gambler with life on one line—you are that clear-sounding string which, in its extreme tension, has calibrated the silence of all things.
