<a id="p009"></a>

Everything has stopped. Not quiet—frozen. Time, like a river flowing into bitter cold, has suddenly frozen through, congealed in place. You want to do something, but every thought jams as it rises, like a rusted gear. All things are wrapped in a transparent, hard jelly—and you, inside it, cannot move.

<a id="p010"></a>

The scripture renders this thorough petrifaction: “The stream of time freezes through and through; all matters congeal in glue.” The stream of time is frozen, clear to the bottom, yet motionless. All matters are as if thrown into flash-frozen glue, keeping the posture of their last moment, congealed there. This is an adhesion even thought can feel.

<a id="p011"></a>

You try to resist: “To flow it cannot; to think it—thought too stalls.” You want to restore the flow of life, but cannot push this invisible ice-wall. You try to think a way to break the deadlock, and find thought itself has turned viscous, sluggish, unable to turn. Action and thought—the two great functions of life—have both stalled at once.

<a id="p012"></a>

At this point a wholly new view is lit: “Congealed being is not death—it is water become crystal.” This congealing is not the death of life. It is only water (your flowing life), under different conditions, turned into ice-crystal. The form has changed; the essence is not lost. And the change from flowing liquid to solid crystal means a new possibility is being born.

<a id="p013"></a>

This new possibility is: “Transparent to the eight directions, mirroring even the finest dust.” Since you cannot move, let your gaze become your entire action. In this crystal-like standstill, look carefully, aimlessly: look at the emotional folds you overlooked in your busyness, the dust of beliefs never examined, the cold, clear texture of this “standstill” itself.

<a id="p014"></a>

When water congeals to ice—especially clear ice—it becomes crystal-clear, gaining the power of reflecting and mirroring. It no longer merely rushes blindly forward, but can, like a bright mirror, reflect all eight directions—even the finest dust cannot hide.

<a id="p015"></a>

Your standstill has given you unprecedented clarity and insight. The details overlooked in the rush, the truths covered over—now they present themselves clearly.

<a id="p016"></a>

At last, the scene is sublimated: “The ice-sealed river surface becomes of itself a mirror-sky.” The whole surface of the river is sealed in ice—it is no longer a river; it has become a vast mirror of the sky spread over the earth. It mirrors the blue sky and white clouds—becoming of itself a mirror-sky.

<a id="p017"></a>

Your life, in this extreme “congealing,” has turned from a channel exploring the outside into a bright mirror reflecting the whole of existence.

<a id="p018"></a>

Being-Congealing is not the paralysis of life. It is life’s magnificent turn from “doer” to “watcher.” You were frozen so that you would stop your rushing and see what a complete, magnificent sky you are able to mirror. Beneath the ice, the flow has never stopped—it is only waiting for spring; above the ice, you already hold the reflection of an entire universe.
